Book Normal Histology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Normal Histology Classic Reprint written by Edward Kellogg Dunham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Normal Histology The general plan and scope of this outline of histology are the result of experience in teaching this subject to students of medicine under conditions which require economy of time. In order to accomplish the greatest amount of instruction under these circum stances it seemed necessary to present, early in the course, certain generalizations which might be kept constantly in mind and assist the memory in retaining facts by showing their logical correlation. The broad ideas of almost universal applicability which were chosen for this purpose were first, the conception of the cell as the active constituent of tissues second, the general rule that the ele mentary tissues are composed of cells and intercellular substances, and that their differences depend upon the preportions or characters of those constituents; third, that the structural details of the dif ferent tissues are intimately correlated to their usefulness - i. E., that function and structure are mutually dependent upon each other, being but two aspects of a single device or arrangement; and, fourth, that the ability of tissues to perform active functions is, in the main, roughly proportional to the number or size of the cells entering into their structure. The author believes that his experience has shown that the early introduction of these fundamental ideas has been a distinct aid to the student and it is his belief that such would also be the case no matter to what limits the course of instruction in this subject might be extended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Students Histology: A Course of Normal Histology for Student's and Practitioners of Medicine This volume has been prepared with a view of aiding the instructors andstudents of the laboratory classes whichare under my direction. It is also presented with the hope that it may be useful to other instructors. Again, students often wish to continue microscopical work during the interim of college attendance; to such, it is my belief, these pages will have some value. Still again, very many practitioners, not having had, during pupilage, advantages equal to those provided by the modern laboratory equipment, wish to acquiremore knowledge of microscopy, for its value in practical medicine. To such workers, also, I desire to be useful. So much technique has been introduced as has been found to be of absolute necessity, and no more. The processes for the preparation and exhibition of tissues are generally simple and always practicable. In the description of organs, I assume that the student has a fair knowledge of gross anatomy, but knows nothing of histology. The scheme or plan of the structure is first described - using diagrams where requisite to clearness - after which the mode of preparing the sections is indicated, and, under practical demonstration, every hematological detail tabulated in proper order. The drawings will, I believe, aid in the recognition of such elements in the field of the microscope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histology: Normal and Morbid In all his studies he must seek not merely to train his powers of observation; he must endeavor to cultivate his ability to inter pret what he sees; to deduce the processes and causes that have wrought the results he perceives, and to compare those deductions with the conceptions of living things he has already formed, so that his ideas may remain in perfect accord with one another as his grasp of the subject enlarges. By so doing he may hope to create a life like mental picture of the body both in health and during disease. The activities of the body involve changes in the substances of which it is composed. Some of these changes are always destruo tive in character - that is, they result in chemical rearrangements which convert more complex combinations of less stable nature into simpler combinations of greater stability. Such chemical changes, Whether they take place within the body or in external nature, among organic or inorganic substances, are always accompanied by a liberation of energy hitherto locked up or stored in latent or potential form in the compounds of higher complexity. It is this liberated or kinetic energy which is utilized by the bodily mechan ism for the performance of internal or external work. When directed in various ways and operating through different structures, this energy occasions visible movement, appears as heat, etc., or passes again into the latent form in the elaboration of more com plex chemical substances from those of simpler constitution. Book A Manual of Practical Normal Histology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Practical Normal Histology Classic Reprint written by Theophil Mitchell Prudden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Normal Histology The full course for classes in Normal Histology in this laboratory comprises forty lessons, of from one and a half to two hours each. Students are furnished with microscopes, reagents, and all necessary apparatus, with the exception of razors, slides, cover-glasses, and boxes for the preservation of specimens. So little time is usually at the dis posal of medical students for collateral reading, and so necessary is it to occupy as little of the laboratory time as possible in oral descrip tions of tissues and methods, that these notes have been prepared with the expectation that students will anticipate each lesson by read ing beforehand the brief section devoted to its theme, and thus be ready to commence the practical work of the lesson hour without loss of time. It is not to be expected that epitomized descriptions of structures as elaborate as are many of those with which we have to deal in his tology, will be in all cases perfectly clear and intelligible without the aid of figures but the actual specimens prepared, and the sketches from them which are made in the laboratory by the students them selves, will make good, it is hoped, the lack of illustration in the text. Download or read book Normal Histology and Microscopical Anatomy Classic Reprint written by Jeremiah S. Ferguson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Normal Histology and Microscopical Anatomy The original drawings, of which there are about one hundred, have been prepared by the author with the aid of the camera lucida. The photomicrographs, of which one hundred and twenty-two are original, were made, under the author's direction, by Mr. J. N. Lett, and a few by Mr. F. E. Ives. My thanks are due these gentlemen for their able assistance. The illustrations in color have also been drawn by the author with the aid of the camera lucida, and have been reproduced by a process specially devised for the purpose. I desire at this time to acknowledge my indebtedness for numer ous illustrations which have been reproduced from the literature. The author's name has in each case been appended to the legends of these figures, and a reference to the bibliography will serve as a more precise acknowledgment of their source. The list of literature has been arranged in accordance with the main subdivisions of the text, to facilitate ready reference to special topics, and in the hope that the earnest student may be tempted to search beyond the confines of the text-book, and thus acquire a broader appreciation of the subject. To much of the recorded literature the author has been frequently indebted during his experience as a teacher, and it is a pleasure to be able to grate fully acknowledge his indebtedness to these sources. A limited chapter on technique has been inserted at the end. The limits of the work do not permit an extended treatise on this subject, a science by itself, but it is hoped that the few fundamental facts which have been brie y stated may serve to give the student a more exact idea of the methods by which tissues are prepared for examination, and the means by which the more important results have been obtained. Finally, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the repeated courtesies which have been frequently received at the hands of the publishers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Histology It has been impossible to accomplish this without some sacrifice of uniformity of treatment and of logical sequence. This is especially noticeable in the chapter on the nervous system, which has been made much fuller and more practical than is usual. The author's reason for the method of treatment there adopted and for the considerable amount of anatomy which this chapter contains is the apparent success the method has met with in the teaching of this always difficult subject to st ants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histology of the Blood: Normal and Pathological In no department of Pathology has advance been so fitful and interrupted as in that dealing with blood changes in various forms of disease, though none now offers a field that promises such an abundant return for an equal expenditure of time and labour. Observations of great importance were early made by Wharton Jones, Waller, and Hughes Bennett in this country, and by Virchow and Max Schultze in Germany. Not, however, until the decade ending in 1890 was it realised what a large amount of new work on the corpuscular elements of the blood had been done by Hayem, and by Ehrlich and his pupils. As successive papers were published, especially from German laboratories, it became evident that the systematic study of the blood by various new methods was resulting in the acquisition of a large number of facts bearing on the pathology of the blood; though it was still difficult to localise many of the normal haematogenetic processes.
