Download or read book The Vietnam War written by James Edward Westheider and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam War was different from most previous U.S. wars of the twentieth century. It was an undeclared and limited war. The draft to supply the soldiers and serious problems in the Selective Service system meant that the burden of the war was carried disproportionately by minorities and working class whites, many of whom did not want to serve. While many Americans saw service in Vietnam as their patriotic duty, others opposed the war. This is the story of the men and women who served in that war, whether overseas in active combat or in support roles in Viet Nam and stateside.

Book Military Order of World Wars

Download or read book Military Order of World Wars written by and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 1996-06-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious study of the intense and often adversarial relationship between English and American literature in the nineteenth century, Robert Weisbuch portrays the rise of American literary nationalism as a self-conscious effort to resist and, finally, to transcend the contemporary British influence. Describing the transatlantic "double-cross" of literary influence, Weisbuch documents both the American desire to create a literature distinctly different from English models and the English insistence that any such attempt could only fail. The American response, as he demonstrates, was to make strengths out of national disadvantages by rethinking history, time, and traditional concepts of the self, and by reinterpreting and ridiculing major British texts in mocking allusions and scornful parodies. Weisbuch approaches a precise characterization of this "double-cross" by focusing on paired sets of English and American texts. Investigations of the causes, motives, and literary results of the struggle alternate with detailed analyses of several test cases. Weisbuch considers Melville's challenge to Dickens, Thoreau's response to Coleridge and Wordsworth, Hawthorne's adaptation of Keats and influence on Eliot, Whitman's competition with Arnold, and Poe's reshaping of Shelley. Adding a new dimension to the exploration of an emerging aesthetic consciousness, Atlantic Double-Cross provides important insights into the creation of the American literary canon.

Download or read book The Rise to Respectability written by Calvin White and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise to Respectability documents the history of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) and examines its cultural and religious impact on African Americans and on the history of the South. It explores the ways in which Charles Harrison Mason, the son of slaves and founder of COGIC, embraced a Pentecostal faith that celebrated charismatic forms of religious expression that many blacks had come to view as outdated, unsophisticated, and embarrassing. While examining the intersection of race, religion, and class, The Rise to Respectability details how the denomination dealt with the stringent standard of bourgeois behavior imposed on churchgoers as they moved from southern rural areas into the urban centers in both the South and North. Rooted in the hardships of slavery and coming of age during Jim Crow, COGIC's story is more than a religious debate. Rather, this book sees the history of the church as interwoven with the Great Migration, the struggle for modernity, class tension, and racial animosity--all representative parts of the African American experience.

It was an undeclared and limited war that divided the country and was fought disproportionately by minorities and working-class whites, many of whom did not want to serve. This is the story of the men and women who participated in this generation-defining conflict overseas and stateside -- a war of search-and-destroy missions and combat with an ill-defined enemy, but also a war of drug use, fragging, and antiwar protests ... James Westheider captures the many dimensions of what it was like to fight in the Vietnam War"--Page 4 of cover.
