Cochrane's centennial history of the town, in which the compiler endeavored to record the genealogy, however fragmentary, of every family born or associated with Antrim from 1777 to the time of the book's publication in 1880. Many of the genealogies, it should be noted, span the town's 100-year history to 1877 and/or are replete with biographical information on their subjects. Arranged alphabetically by surname, the sketches number nearly 1,000.

Book excerpt: Showing in stunning detail the phenomenal evolution of one of America's most historic cities from its beginnings as a town to its current expanse, this "Every Square Inch of Norfolk" book presents an astonishing array of historic Norfolk-area maps spanning 200 years. Arranged side by side and scaled to identical sizes, the maps make it possible to pinpoint every major change in the city, almost decade by decade. The book utilizes the most important detailed maps ever drawn of the entire city, beginning with the little-known War of 1812 map, the first great map to cover all the areas that make up today's Norfolk. (And if you are reading other books in the Every Square Inch of Norfolk series, then this book is especially indispensible, as the maps in the book serve as the basemaps to which all the other books in the series refer.) Along with its extensive indexes and penetrating and meticulously researched textual background information, Evolution of A City In Maps is an ideal resource for the study of every facet of Norfolk history and geography, making it not only an invaluable reference but also a significant contribution to American geography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Norfolk: Litchfield County, Connecticut "Of making many books there is no end." "O that mine adversary had written a book." - Holy Wait. Some years ago, in searching out family genealogy, the want of a history of my native town became to me apparent. As bits of Norfolk history were from time to time discovered, in books and elsewhere, such items were preserved, and the accumulation began. A desire to learn many things from those whose memories and traditions go back to the early part of this century took hold upon me, and knowing full well that upon those around whom the shades of evening have gathered, soon the sun will set, and their remembrances be forever beyond our reach, an effort to obtain these things through correspondence was made, with results not altogether satisfactory. In June, 1899, I came 'home' and soon took up in earnest the work of preparing a history of Norfolk. The encouragement and kindly assistance of a large number of the present residents of the town, and former residents as well, has made the difficult, perplexing task a pleasure. Mention by name cannot well be made of the large number who have put me under lasting obligations for their kind assistance. Some of them have done for others and for me what they could do, and have 'entered into their rest.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These tithables permit the identification of county residents and provide information about various family relationships in crucial years prior to the American revolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Norfolk In attempting to write truthfully of the earlier known history of Norfolk, little can be said of the Aborigines. They are of course supposed to have come to England while it was yet a peninsula, and to have roamed about half-naked, subsisting on such animals as they could kill with flint-headed arrows and celts. Whether they lived in hollows of the ground, such as Grimes Graves, the Weybourne Pits, and the Sheieking Pits at Aylmerton, is very doubtful.
