Book excerpt: FOR ALMOST LONGER THAN SHE CAN REMEMBER, Khia Aleyne Ashworth has been chasing a destiny thrust upon her by forces beyond her control. Now, reunited with her little brother, whom she thought was lost forever, Khia finally reaches what she hoped would be a safe haven at the end of their long journey: Lady Tiamore’s kingdom. However, even though she is at last together again with her old friends and what is left of her real family, she feels more lost and alone than ever. The Corridor of Doors still isn’t done with her. Instead of an ending, she finds that her trials have only just begun. With new and troubling answers about who she is, where she came from, and what lies ahead, Khia must traverse unfamiliar and dangerous paths that could lead to life or death, good or evil, creation or annihilation. What she discovers comes at a great cost. With the Corridor itself threatened with destruction, and countless worlds crumbling to ash, Khia and her companions must fight to ensure their survival, and that out of the ashes, something better is reborn.

Book excerpt: An impossible mystery takes a children’s book author and his politician wife from Connecticut to Mississippi, where death lurks around every bend of the river. Lyon Wentworth is struggling through a bout of writer’s block when a funeral comes to call. The children’s book author had no clue his old friend Dalton Turman had died, nor that his last request had been burial at Lyon’s house. And yet, here are two men of the cloth dragging a coffin through his front door, rearranging his living room for a wake, and asking Lyon where he wants them to put the snake handler’s serpents. Lyon’s patience with his old army buddy’s wishes is nearly exhausted when the “deceased” leaps out of the coffin and the trick is revealed. Dalton Turman, prankster extraordinaire, is alive and kicking. Dalton has come north to invite Lyon and his wife, Bea, down to Mississippi for a party on his ultra-luxe new houseboat. But when Dalton and the boat disappear, it falls to Lyon and Bea to locate their far-out friend and bring him back to reality—dead or alive. Richard Forrest’s Lyon and Bea Wentworth Mysteries aren’t just thrilling, they’re funny, too. In this wild yarn of practical jokers and the people who kill them, the victims will all die laughing. Death on the Mississippi is the 7th book in the Lyon and Bea Wentworth Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: Max surveyed the scenery around him through dark Italian sunglasses. He paused in thought. What he knew in his head was enough to topple champion foosball players from glory to ignominy in an instant, or cause Jesus to cry. Max is a chauffeur who has acquired precious knowledge of his boss's diabolical intentions to conquer the world. The powerful Herr McCoffee of Eglicata will squash anyone in his path and has surrounded himself with a colorful staff that includes Sylvia Smitharomance who has slept her way straight into his cabinet, Manual McGetitdone who has ridden McCoffee's coattails to prominence and is not to be crossed, and Norbert Nodahead a "yes" man worthy of distrust and scrutiny. When McCoffee learns about a disadvantageous plant growing like a noxious weed on the distant island of Dalilennon that has the ability to keep his beautiful fowlawarfare alive, nothing will stop him from harvesting the crop. As McCoffee attempts to create his own defiant brand of world peace, he and his cabinet clash with the likes of Roger Rightjet, Priest Precious, Julian Knotsofoolista, and King Nocturnal in a humorous, allegorical journey where good—as it must—wins in the end.

Book Norbert and Early Norbertine Spirituality

Download or read book Norbert and Early Norbertine Spirituality written by Theodore James Antry and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having met with resistance in his attempts to reform the clergy in his native Xanten, Norbert (ca. 1080-1134) founded a religious community in France. His establishment was the first house of an eventually hugely successful order, the Canons Regular of Premontre, also known as the Premonstratensians or Norbertines. Although Norbert, who was appointed archbishop of Magdeburg in 1126, left no writings, his followers produced many important texts in their efforts to reform a lax and demoralized clergy. Yet, despite these authors' significance to the spirituality of their age, their words and their historical context are little-known to modern readers. This volume renders audible the voices of the twelfth-century followers of Norbert, presenting the most important early Premonstratensian texts (including two versions of the Vita Norberti), along with an introductory essay describing their place in twelfth-century religious life. Book jacket.
