Book Nor Shall My Sword

Download or read book Nor Shall My Sword written by Simon Heffer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should England be independent from Scotland? May 1999. The Scots have their first opportunity in 300 years to elect their own parliament. In 2014 that referendum will finally take place. To many in England, the continuing rise of Scottish nationalism causes unease. Scotland could well choose to leave the United Kingdom. In this provocative polemic, Simon Heffer argues that England must let Scotland go. The lessons of trying to coerce Ireland should have been learnt: there is nothing to be gained by pressing the Scots to stay against their will. Heffer argues that an English parliament could begin to concentrate solely on the needs of the English people. There could be economic gains and greater financial accountability in favour of the English taxpayer. If the English would abandon their sentimental attitude to a country that feels little towards them, says Heffer, they could be happier, richer and more cohesive. The Scots believe that independence and nationalism can lead to freedom and self-confidence for Scotland: why not the same for England?

Book The Shield of Achilles

Download or read book The Shield of Achilles written by W. H. Auden and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first critical edition of W. H. Auden's poetry collection The Shield of Achilles, which won the 1956 National Book Award in Poetry, this book will include the complete text of Auden's award-winning volume The Shield of Achilles, accompanied critical commentary by Alan Jacobs: a preface to provide historical and publishing context; a longer introduction to orient the reader to the poems themselves; and detailed notes on words or passages in need of clarification for contemporary readers. Jacobs, who has edited two previous critical editions of Auden's poetry, argues that this was the most important single collection of poems Auden published, and also the most coherent of his collections. The two poetic sequences, "Bucolics" and "Horae Canonicae," bookend a remarkable set of lyrics, with "The Shield of Achilles" itself at the heart. One of Auden's last long poems, it refers to moment in The Iliad in which Thetis, mother of Achilles, asks Hephaestus to forge a shield for her son. Auden re-imagines how the shield of Achilles would look in the modern age, when the rules of war and the role of the hero have been rewritten. While the volume was widely praised, it is now out of print (although the title poem is included in larger collections of Auden's poetry). A critical edition allows readers to better understand and appreciate one of Auden's most important later poetic works, written in what Jacobs describes as "a poetic idiom that differs quite significantly from what anyone else at the time was doing. . . . it is, in a vital sense, public poetry and it can be enjoyed, understood, and profited from. This edition is meant to make that enjoyment, understanding, and profit easier of access.""--

  • Pages : 62 pages

Download or read book Absalom and Achitophel written by John Dryden and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Absalom and Achitophel" is a profound political allegory crafted by John Dryden, a distinguished English poet and playwright during the 17th century. Published in 1681, the poem ingeniously employs biblical characters, particularly Absalom's rebellion against King David, to allegorically mirror the contemporary political tumult of the Monmouth Rebellion and the Exclusion Crisis in England. Dryden's satirical brilliance illuminates the narrative, offering a sharp critique of the political figures involved, with Absalom symbolizing James Scott (Duke of Monmouth) and Achitophel representing the Earl of Shaftesbury. The use of heroic couplets, a rhyming couplet form, adds to the poem's literary significance, creating a rhythmic and engaging narrative. "Absalom and Achitophel" stands not only as a poetic masterpiece but also as a historical commentary, providing a window into the intricate political and social dynamics of the late 17th century. Readers interested in the intersection of political allegory, satire, and historical events will find this work to be a captivating exploration within the rich tapestry of English literature. Copies of this influential poem can be explored in collections of classic literature, libraries, and online platforms dedicated to preserving literary heritage.
