Book Cognitive Enhancing Drugs

Download or read book Cognitive Enhancing Drugs written by Jerry J. Buccafusco and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade research into the pharmacology of cognition, particularly regarding learning and memory, has supported the concept that many potential neural targets exist for the development of cognitive-enhancing drugs. Whereas the main impetus for this research has been the ever growing population of individuals with dementing disorders such as Alzheimer`s disease, attention is also being focused on issues relating to cognitive impairment associated with "normal" aging. This book is useful as a source of information for making informed decisions regarding the relative utility and attributes of the various neural targets that have been studied to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly are nootropics? Nootropics are generally called "smart drugs" because they improve brainpower. but, more than 80 unique substances can fall under this broad category and they are wildly distinctive and generally useless. They include Adderall for ADHD, psychedelics, and even coffee. Do nootropics actually work? Choosing one as a complement is a muddy picture, however some nootropics DO work. most "smart pills" are stimulants -- short-acting chemicals that give you a boost in focus and attention for some hours. The nootropics that we have good evidence for, such as Adderall and Modafinil (sometimes used to help humans recover from a coma), are prescribed drugs. The "smart drugs" that aren't prescription-based or illegal have little or no proof suggesting they work. The substance must... Help the brain function under disruptive conditions, such as hypoxia (low oxygen) and electroconvulsive shock. Protect the brain from chemical and physical assaults, such as anti-cholinergic drugs and barbiturates. Increase the efficacy of neuronal firing control mechanisms in cortical and sub-cortical regions of the brain. Possess few or no side effects and be virtually non-toxic. Enhance memory and ability to learn. Research indicates getting omega-3s from fish is better than simply taking drugs, but if fish is simply too tough to get, put together, or eat, then the drugs are an awesome 2d alternative. Omega-3s are the real "smart drugs" in that you could not sense the results the day you consume them, however you may be in much better cognitive shape a few years from now than in case you had never added them in your diet. Book Augmentation of Brain Function Facts Fiction and Controversy

Download or read book Augmentation of Brain Function Facts Fiction and Controversy written by Ioan Opris and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Volume II is entitled “Neurostimulation and pharmacological approaches”. This volume describes augmentation approaches, where improvements in brain functions are achieved by modulation of brain circuits with electrical or optical stimulation, or pharmacological agents. Activation of brain circuits with electrical currents is a conventional approach that includes such methods as (i) intracortical microstimulation (ICMS), (ii) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and (iii) transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). tDCS and TMS are often regarded as noninvasive methods. Yet, they may induce long-lasting plastic changes in the brain. This is why some authors consider the term “noninvasive” misleading when used to describe these and other techniques, such as stimulation with transcranial lasers. The volume further discusses the potential of neurostimulation as a research tool in the studies of perception, cognition and behavior. Additionally, a notion is expressed that brain augmentation with stimulation cannot be described as a net zero sum proposition, where brain resources are reallocated in such a way that gains in one function are balanced by costs elsewhere. In recent years, optogenetic methods have received an increased attention, and several articles in Volume II cover different aspects of this technique. While new optogenetic methods are being developed, the classical electrical stimulation has already been utilized in many clinically relevant applications, like the vestibular implant and tactile neuroprosthesis that utilizes ICMS. As a peculiar usage of neurostimulation and pharmacological methods, Volume II includes several articles on augmented memory. Memory prostheses are a popular recent development in the stimulation-based BMIs. For example, in a hippocampal memory prosthesis, memory content is extracted from hippocampal activity using a multiple-input, multiple-output non-linear dynamical model. As to the pharmacological approaches to augmenting memory and cognition, the pros and cons of using nootropic drugs are discussed.

Book Psychotropic Agents

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642677673
  • Pages : 796 pages

Download or read book Psychotropic Agents written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume continues the description of the psychotropic agents and discusses anxiolytics, gerontopsychopharmacological agents, and psychomotor stimulants. Of these groups of substances, most of this volume has been devoted to anxiolytics as the authors have endeavored to convey as complete a picture as possible. The editors are of the opinion that particular attention should be given to anxiolytics with regard to their range of administration as this is the most frequently prescribed group of psychotropic drugs. In contrast to neuroleptics and thymoleptics, anxiolytics are a class of psychotropic drugs whose therapeutic effect can be recognized in animal experiments to some extent. This, together with the analysis of the biochemical mechanisms of their actions, permits a better understanding of material processes in the brain accompanying the emotions: anxiety and tension. For the first time in the history of the Handbook the editors have devoted a whole chapter to gerontopsychopharmacological agents. In doing so they are also aware of the risk they are taking, at least from a pharmacological point of view, as gerontopsychopharmacological agents are an insufficiently defined and extremely heterogeneous group of substances. The only denominator the various subgroups of these agents have in common is that they are given in cases of dysfunctions, disorders, and diseases of the brain occurring mainly in the elderly.

Book Nutrition and Functional Foods for Healthy Aging

Download or read book Nutrition and Functional Foods for Healthy Aging written by Ronald Ross Watson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrition and Functional Foods for Healthy Aging aims to equip anyone studying geriatric nutrition or working with aging adults with the latest scientific reviews of critical topics. The major objective of this book is to review, in detail, the health problems of the aged and how normal food, lifestyle, or nutritional and dietary supplements can help treat them. Nutrient requirements for optimum health and function of aging physiological systems are often quite distinct from those required for young people. The special nutrition problems of the aged are intensively researched and tested, especially as the elderly become a larger percentage of the population. Many chronic diseases and cancers are found with higher frequency in the aged, and it is also widely known that many elderly people use foods and nutrients well above the recommended daily allowance, which can be detrimental to optimal health. Explains the evidence supporting nutritional interventions relevant to age-related diseases Reviews the macro- and micro-nutrient requirements of aging adults and their variables Describes how alcohol, drugs, and caffeine can impact deficiencies, also exploring functional food and dietary supplements that can be used for prevention and treatment
