Download or read book Nashville s Songwriting Sweethearts written by Bobbie Malone and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The story of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant is the story of towering artistic achievement wrapped in a love story so deep and so complete that the two are their own country song. Bobbie and Bill Malone are precisely the right match to tell this tale of love and genius.”—Ken Burns, Director, Country Music You might not know the names of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, but you know their music. Arriving in Nashville in 1950, the songwriting duo became the first full-time independent songwriters in that musical city. In the course of their long careers, they created classic hits that pushed the boundaries of country music into the realms of pop and rock. Songs like “Bye Bye Love,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” “Love Hurts,” and “Rocky Top” inspired young musicians everywhere. Here, for the first time, is a complete biography of Nashville’s power songwriting couple. In Nashville’s Songwriting Sweethearts, authors Bobbie Malone and Bill C. Malone recount how Boudleaux and Felice, married in 1945, began their partnership as itinerant musicians living in a trailer home and writing their first songs together. In Nashville the couple had to deal with racism, classism, and in Felice’s case, sexism. Yet through hard work and business acumen—and a dose of good luck—they overcame these obstacles and rose to national prominence. By the late 1990s, the Bryants had written as many as 6,000 songs and had sold more than 350 million copies worldwide. They were inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972, and in 1991 they became members of the Country Music Hall of Fame—a rare occurrence for songwriters who were not also performers. In 1982 their composition “Rocky Top” was adopted as one of the official state songs of Tennessee. The Bryants were lucky enough to arrive in the right place at the right time. Their emergence in the early fifties coincided with the rise of Nashville as Music City, USA. And their prolific collaboration with the Everly Brothers, beginning in 1957, sparked a fusion between country and pop music that endures to this day.

Book excerpt: When a Paiute Indian woman asks a Buddhist monk if she can "steal" Bodhichitta, she instantly becomes a spiritual guide for the monk and his prized disciple Daniel. Bodhichitta-the effort to perfect oneself for the sake of others-is the most refined of Buddha's instructions. The Native American woman demonstrates how this Buddhist maxim is an accurate description of the Paiute state of mind. As a result of her theft, an entourage of tech-savvy San Francisco millennials, Daniel, and the Buddhist monk set out to convince one of the world's largest corporations, the state of Nevada, and the EPA to right a wrong inflicted upon the Earth Mother of the Paiutes. From the cloistered Buddhist meditation center in San Francisco, Daniel, the monk, and members of the Buddhist community learn Buddha's real intention was to jump into the world and not separate from it for personal benefit. Their efforts inspire valid spiritual realizations that help them to adjust their lives according to the reality of the present moment and the power of the wisdom teachings of Buddha.
Download or read book Folly on Folly written by Charles Packard and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-01-07 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not for scholars, but for a new generation of readers unaware of Erasmuss unique genius. An innovative, ingenious update. Kirkus Reviews. Packards verse translation does what it sets out to do: enlivens what otherwise can be heavy going. Puckerbrush Review Astoundingly clever. The Classical Outlook By his own account, Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch monk and scholar, wrote his 1509 Latin prose masterpiece, The Praise of Folly, in seven days, more or less while a guest at the London home of his friend and fellow humanist Sir Thomas More. Friends with whom Erasmus shared his manuscript arranged its publication in Paris in 1511 in an unauthorized edition. Erasmus, surprised but pleased by the immediate popularity of the work, revised it seven times, with thirty-six editions appearing during his lifetime. Folly on Folly presents this classic transcript of the goddess Follys lecture delivered in a university hall to an audience of scholars. A persona invented by Erasmus, the goddess Folly has chosen herself as her subject. Her incongruous costumea scholars robe with the belled hat of a jestersuggests (correctly) that her words will be a mix of the serious with the hilarious. Throughout the lecture, she makes her case that foolishness, not rational thought, benefits humankind morewith most of the human foibles she cites, whether secular or spiritual, remaining with us today. This version of The Praise of Folly, the first in verse, was written to commemorate the 500th anniversary of this enduring works creation.
Download or read book The Folly of Prayer written by Matt Woodley and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayer can feel mysteriously difficult, boringly perfunctory and frustratingly out of our control. Often prayer brings us comfort, but sometimes, especially when there aren t easy resolutions or prayers go unanswered, it intensifies and focuses our sense of longing, pain and care. And often God uses our times of darkness and desperation to awaken our hearts to the ache within us--and the cries of those suffering around us. Prayer is all about coming before God to face life head-on, with all its jagged edges of mystery, joy, longing and agony. In fact, says pastor Matt Woodley, prayer is actually a real encounter with the untamable God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore our experience of it should reflect the power, mystery and even risk of entering into relationship with the Lord of the universe. In this book Woodley strips away all the religious-speak and presuppositions we have about prayer, distilling it to the essence of wholehearted engagement with the living God. Exploring an earthy, unadorned, jargon-free approach to prayer, Woodley unpacks a host of fresh synonyms for God-encounters, including prayer as desperation, invocation, mystery, astonishment, groaning and even absence. These marginal ways of praying compel us to engage marginal people--the desperate, the groaning, the victimized and the ignored. As we pray God will open our eyes to the pain of the world around us. With stories from his own experience and biblical and historical examples, Woodley gives fresh language to describe a life grounded in prayer that leads to compassion and service.
