Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years there has been a fruitful exchange of expertise on the subject of partial differential equations (PDEs) between mathematicians from the People's Republic of China and the rest of the world. The goal of this collection of papers is to summarize and introduce the historical progress of the development of PDEs in China from the 1950s to the 1980s. The results presented here were mainly published before the 1980s, but, having been printed in the Chinese language, have not reached the wider audience they deserve. Topics covered include, among others, nonlinear hyperbolic equations, nonlinear elliptic equations, nonlinear parabolic equations, mixed equations, free boundary problems, minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds, microlocal analysis and solitons. For mathematicians and physicists interested in the historical development of PDEs in the People's Republic of China.

Book Functional Approach to Nonlinear Models of Water Flow in Soils

Download or read book Functional Approach to Nonlinear Models of Water Flow in Soils written by G. Marinoschi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-09-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work of applied mathematics focuses on the functional study of the nonlinear boundary value problems relating to water flow in porous media, a topic which has not up to now been explored in book form. The author shows that abstract theory may be sometimes easier and richer in consequences for applications than standard classical approaches are. The volume deals with diffusion type models, emphasizing the mathematical treatment of their nonlinear aspects.

Book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States 3

Download or read book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States 3 written by N.G Lloyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear diffusion equations have held a prominent place in the theory of partial differential equations, both for the challenging and deep math ematical questions posed by such equations and the important role they play in many areas of science and technology. Examples of current inter est are biological and chemical pattern formation, semiconductor design, environmental problems such as solute transport in groundwater flow, phase transitions and combustion theory. Central to the theory is the equation Ut = ~cp(U) + f(u). Here ~ denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, cp and f are given functions and the solution is defined on some domain n x [0, T] in space-time. FUn damental questions concern the existence, uniqueness and regularity of so lutions, the existence of interfaces or free boundaries, the question as to whether or not the solution can be continued for all time, the asymptotic behavior, both in time and space, and the development of singularities, for instance when the solution ceases to exist after finite time, either through extinction or through blow up.

Book Polyhedral Methods in Geosciences

Download or read book Polyhedral Methods in Geosciences written by Daniele Antonio Di Pietro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed a surge in the development and usage of discretization methods supporting general meshes in geoscience applications. The need for general polyhedral meshes in this context can arise in several situations, including the modelling of petroleum reservoirs and basins, CO2 and nuclear storage sites, etc. In the above and other situations, classical discretization methods are either not viable or require ad hoc modifications that add to the implementation complexity. Discretization methods able to operate on polyhedral meshes and possibly delivering arbitrary-order approximations constitute in this context a veritable technological jump. The goal of this monograph is to establish a state-of-the-art reference on polyhedral methods for geoscience applications by gathering contributions from top-level research groups working on this topic. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers wishing to deepen their knowledge of advanced numerical methods with a focus on geoscience applications, as well as practitioners of the field.
