Book Methods of Dynamic and Nonsmooth Optimization

Download or read book Methods of Dynamic and Nonsmooth Optimization written by Frank H. Clarke and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the elements of a unified approach to optimization based on 'nonsmooth analysis', a term introduced in the 1970's by the author, who is a pioneer in the field. Based on a series of lectures given at a conference at Emory University in 1986, this volume presents its subjects in a self-contained and accessible manner. The topics treated here have been in an active state of development. Focuses mainly on deterministic optimal control, the calculus of variations, and mathematical programming. In addition, it features a tutorial in nonsmooth analysis and geometry and demonstrates that the method of value function analysis via proximal normals is a powerful tool in the study of necessary conditions, sufficient conditions, controllability, and sensitivity analysis. The distinction between inductive and deductive methods, the use of Hamiltonians, the verification technique, and penalization are also emphasized.

Book Nonsmooth Optimization and Its Applications

Download or read book Nonsmooth Optimization and Its Applications written by Seyedehsomayeh Hosseini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since nonsmooth optimization problems arise in a diverse range of real-world applications, the potential impact of efficient methods for solving such problems is undeniable. Even solving difficult smooth problems sometimes requires the use of nonsmooth optimization methods, in order to either reduce the problem’s scale or simplify its structure. Accordingly, the field of nonsmooth optimization is an important area of mathematical programming that is based on by now classical concepts of variational analysis and generalized derivatives, and has developed a rich and sophisticated set of mathematical tools at the intersection of theory and practice. This volume of ISNM is an outcome of the workshop "Nonsmooth Optimization and its Applications," which was held from May 15 to 19, 2017 at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, University of Bonn. The six research articles gathered here focus on recent results that highlight different aspects of nonsmooth and variational analysis, optimization methods, their convergence theory and applications.

Book Nonsmooth Optimization Analysis And Algorithms With Applications To Optimal Control

Download or read book Nonsmooth Optimization Analysis And Algorithms With Applications To Optimal Control written by Marko M Makela and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-05-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained elementary study for nonsmooth analysis and optimization, and their use in solution of nonsmooth optimal control problems. The first part of the book is concerned with nonsmooth differential calculus containing necessary tools for nonsmooth optimization. The second part is devoted to the methods of nonsmooth optimization and their development. In the last part nonsmooth optimization is applied to problems arising from optimal control of systems covered by partial differential equations. Several practical problems, like process control and optimal shape design problems are considered.

Book Mathematics of Optimization Smooth and Nonsmooth Case

Download or read book Mathematics of Optimization Smooth and Nonsmooth Case written by Giorgio Giorgi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-03-10 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is intended for people (graduates, researchers, but also undergraduates with a good mathematical background) involved in the study of (static) optimization problems (in finite-dimensional spaces). It contains a lot of material, from basic tools of convex analysis to optimality conditions for smooth optimization problems, for non smooth optimization problems and for vector optimization problems. The development of the subjects are self-contained and the bibliographical references are usually treated in different books (only a few books on optimization theory deal also with vector problems), so the book can be a starting point for further readings in a more specialized literature. Assuming only a good (even if not advanced) knowledge of mathematical analysis and linear algebra, this book presents various aspects of the mathematical theory in optimization problems. The treatment is performed in finite-dimensional spaces and with no regard to algorithmic questions. After two chapters concerning, respectively, introductory subjects and basic tools and concepts of convex analysis, the book treats extensively mathematical programming problems in the smmoth case, in the nonsmooth case and finally vector optimization problems. · Self-contained · Clear style and results are either proved or stated precisely with adequate references · The authors have several years experience in this field · Several subjects (some of them non usual in books of this kind) in one single book, including nonsmooth optimization and vector optimization problems · Useful long references list at the end of each chapter

Book Multiobjective Linear Programming

Download or read book Multiobjective Linear Programming written by Dinh The Luc and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the field of multiobjective optimization through problems with simple structures, namely those in which the objective function and constraints are linear. Fundamental notions as well as state-of-the-art advances are presented in a comprehensive way and illustrated with the help of numerous examples. Three of the most popular methods for solving multiobjective linear problems are explained, and exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, helping students to grasp and apply key concepts and methods to more complex problems. The book was motivated by the fact that the majority of the practical problems we encounter in management science, engineering or operations research involve conflicting criteria and therefore it is more convenient to formulate them as multicriteria optimization models, the solution concepts and methods of which cannot be treated using traditional mathematical programming approaches.

Book Introduction to Nonsmooth Optimization

Download or read book Introduction to Nonsmooth Optimization written by Adil Bagirov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first easy-to-read text on nonsmooth optimization (NSO, not necessarily differentiable optimization). Solving these kinds of problems plays a critical role in many industrial applications and real-world modeling systems, for example in the context of image denoising, optimal control, neural network training, data mining, economics and computational chemistry and physics. The book covers both the theory and the numerical methods used in NSO and provide an overview of different problems arising in the field. It is organized into three parts: 1. convex and nonconvex analysis and the theory of NSO; 2. test problems and practical applications; 3. a guide to NSO software. The book is ideal for anyone teaching or attending NSO courses. As an accessible introduction to the field, it is also well suited as an independent learning guide for practitioners already familiar with the basics of optimization.

Book Recent Advances in Nonsmooth Optimization

Download or read book Recent Advances in Nonsmooth Optimization written by Dingzhu Du and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonsmooth optimization covers the minimization or maximization of functions which do not have the differentiability properties required by classical methods. The field of nonsmooth optimization is significant, not only because of the existence of nondifferentiable functions arising directly in applications, but also because several important methods for solving difficult smooth problems lead directly to the need to solve nonsmooth problems, which are either smaller in dimension or simpler in structure. This book contains twenty five papers written by forty six authors from twenty countries in five continents. It includes papers on theory, algorithms and applications for problems with first-order nondifferentiability (the usual sense of nonsmooth optimization) second-order nondifferentiability, nonsmooth equations, nonsmooth variational inequalities and other problems related to nonsmooth optimization.

Book Generalized Convexity Nonsmooth Variational Inequalities and Nonsmooth Optimization

Download or read book Generalized Convexity Nonsmooth Variational Inequalities and Nonsmooth Optimization written by Qamrul Hasan Ansari and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, no book addressed convexity, monotonicity, and variational inequalities together. Generalized Convexity, Nonsmooth Variational Inequalities, and Nonsmooth Optimization covers all three topics, including new variational inequality problems defined by a bifunction. The first part of the book focuses on generalized convexity and generalized monotonicity. The authors investigate convexity and generalized convexity for both the differentiable and nondifferentiable case. For the nondifferentiable case, they introduce the concepts in terms of a bifunction and the Clarke subdifferential. The second part offers insight into variational inequalities and optimization problems in smooth as well as nonsmooth settings. The book discusses existence and uniqueness criteria for a variational inequality, the gap function associated with it, and numerical methods to solve it. It also examines characterizations of a solution set of an optimization problem and explores variational inequalities defined by a bifunction and set-valued version given in terms of the Clarke subdifferential. Integrating results on convexity, monotonicity, and variational inequalities into one unified source, this book deepens your understanding of various classes of problems, such as systems of nonlinear equations, optimization problems, complementarity problems, and fixed-point problems. The book shows how variational inequality theory not only serves as a tool for formulating a variety of equilibrium problems, but also provides algorithms for computational purposes.

Book Nonsmooth Optimization

Download or read book Nonsmooth Optimization written by Claude Lemarechal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonsmooth Optimization contains the proceedings of a workshop on non-smooth optimization (NSO) held from March 28 to April 8,1977 in Austria under the auspices of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. The papers explore the techniques and theory of NSO and cover topics ranging from systems of inequalities to smooth approximation of non-smooth functions, as well as quadratic programming and line searches. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with a survey of Soviet research on subgradient optimization carried out since 1962, followed by a discussion on rates of convergence in subgradient optimization. The reader is then introduced to the method of subgradient optimization in an abstract setting and the minimal hypotheses required to ensure convergence; NSO and nonlinear programming; and bundle methods in NSO. A feasible descent algorithm for linearly constrained least squares problems is described. The book also considers sufficient minimization of piecewise-linear univariate functions before concluding with a description of the method of parametric decomposition in mathematical programming. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians and mathematics students.

Download or read book Continuous Optimization written by V. Jeyakumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous optimization is the study of problems in which we wish to opti mize (either maximize or minimize) a continuous function (usually of several variables) often subject to a collection of restrictions on these variables. It has its foundation in the development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz in the 17*^ century. Nowadys, continuous optimization problems are widespread in the mathematical modelling of real world systems for a very broad range of applications. Solution methods for large multivariable constrained continuous optimiza tion problems using computers began with the work of Dantzig in the late 1940s on the simplex method for linear programming problems. Recent re search in continuous optimization has produced a variety of theoretical devel opments, solution methods and new areas of applications. It is impossible to give a full account of the current trends and modern applications of contin uous optimization. It is our intention to present a number of topics in order to show the spectrum of current research activities and the development of numerical methods and applications.
