Book Resonant Nonlinear Interactions of Light with Matter

Download or read book Resonant Nonlinear Interactions of Light with Matter written by Valerii S. Butylkin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted primarily to the various kinds of resonant nonlinear in teractions of light with two-level (or, in many cases, multilevel) systems. The interactions can involve one-photon as well as multiphoton processes in which some combinations of frequencies of participating photons are close to tran sitions of atoms or molecules (e.g., we consider stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) as a resonant interaction). This approach involves a broad spectrum of problems. Discussion of some of the basic phenomena as well as the pertinent theory could be found, for instance, in such well-known books as the ones due to N. Bloembergen; S.A. Akhmanov and R.V. Khokhlov; L. Allen and J.H. Eberly, and to V.M. Fain and Ya.1. Khanin. The book "Quantum Electronics" by A. Yariv could serve as an introductory guide to the subject. Thus, some of the basic material in the present book will already be well known to the reader who is an expert in the field. There are, for instance, general density matrix equations; two-level model and basic effects associated with this model, such as saturation of one-photon absorption and Raby oscillations; some basic multiphoton processes such as two-photon absorption, SRS, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear optics has been a rapidly growing field in recent decades. It is based on the study of effects and phenomena related to the interaction of intense coherent light radiation with matter. Physics of Nonlinear Optics describes various major nonlinear optical effects, including physical principles, experimental techniques, up-to-date research achievements, and current or potential applications. This book features clear conceptual descriptions, concise formulations, and emphasizes both theoretical and experimental aspects of nonlinear optics. The readability of this book is particularly enhanced by a series of color photographs showing the spectacular appearances of various nonlinear optical effects. Both authors of this book are outstanding research scientists renowned in their professional areas. Their major research achievements in nonlinear optics include the pioneering studies of two-wave-coupled refractive-index change, Raman-enhanced self-focusing, optical-frequency Pockels effect, stimulated Kerr scattering, optical phase-conjugation via backward stimulated emission, and two-photon-absorption based optical limiting, stabilization and reshaping.

Book The Physics of Laser Radiation Matter Interaction

Download or read book The Physics of Laser Radiation Matter Interaction written by Alexander Horn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-20 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains the fundamental processes involved in the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter. It leads students from a general discussion of electrodynamics, forming the mathematical foundation for the Maxwell equations, to key results such as the Fresnel equations, Snell’s law, and the Brewster angle, deriving along the way the equations for accelerated charges and discussing dipole radiation, Bremsstrahlung and synchrotron radiation. By considering more and more interacting particles, the book advances its treatment of the subject, approaching the solid-state regime using both classical and quantum mechanical approaches to describe interaction paths with electromagnetic radiation. Finally, specific interactions of laser radiation with matter are explained such as ultrafast, coherent, and selective interaction. With an emphasis on achieving an intuitive grasp of the basic physics underlying common laser technology, this textbook is ideal for graduate students seeking both a better fundamental and applied understanding of laser–matter interaction.

Book Interaction Between Intense Optical Radiation and Matter

Download or read book Interaction Between Intense Optical Radiation and Matter written by Michael Hercher and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes a study of the nonlinear absorption properties of a number of the organic dye molecules which have been widely used in conjunction with ruby lasers. The dominant characteristic of this nonlinear behavior is a reduction in the optical transmission of a dye sample when irradiated with intense laser light. The three dye molecules studies are cryptocyanine, metalfree phthalocyanine, and chloroaluminum phthalocyanine, which were dissolved in a variety of solvents. The primary photophysical processes of polyatomic molecules are discussed. Several excited-state lifetime of the three molecules have been determined experimentally. The saturation of molecular absorption for these three molecules is analyzed on the basis of a rate equation approach to a simple three-level model plus excited-state absorptions. The general characteristics of dye Q-switched laser pulse evolution are also discussed and experiments are described which were performed to study the nature of the spectral hole-burning responsible for frequency-locking between different lasers. Also research on photon-induced breakdown of gases due to inverse Bremsstrahlung is very briefly summerized. (Author).

Book Instabilities in Laser Matter Interaction

Download or read book Instabilities in Laser Matter Interaction written by Sergei I. Anisimov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-03-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the thermal and hydrodynamic instabilities appearing in laser-matter interactions at moderate intensities. These instabilities result in the distortion of phase-transition front, dispersion of target material in condensed phase, formation of dissipative surface structures, generation of complex oscillatory evaporation modes, and so on. These effects, in turn, lead to the appearance of liquid droplets in an expanding vapor, non-uniform removal of a solid material, and the enhanced light absorption in the vapor plume. This book focuses on nonresonant interactions. It concentrates on the range of low and moderate laser intensities that are important for technological applications of lasers. Instabilities in Laser-Matter Interaction provides a theoretical background to the interpretation of experimental results and an understanding of the effect of instabilities on the processes of laser technology.

Book The Nature of X Rays and Their Interactions with Matter

Download or read book The Nature of X Rays and Their Interactions with Matter written by Joachim Stöhr and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 933 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of modern x-ray science, based on the use of synchrotron radiation and x-ray-free electron lasers (XFELs). It emphasizes the new capabilities of XFELs which extend the study of matter to the intrinsic timescales associated with the motion of atoms and chemical transformations and give birth to the new field of non-linear x-ray science. Starting with the historical understanding of the puzzling nature of light, it covers the modern description of the creation, properties, and detection of x-rays within quantum optics. It then presents the formulation of the interactions of x-rays with atomic matter, both, from semi-classical and first-principles quantum points of view. The fundamental x-ray processes and techniques, absorption, emission, Thomson, and resonant scattering (REXS and RIXS) are reviewed with emphasis on simple intuitive pictures that are illustrated by experimental results. Concepts of x-ray imaging and diffractive imaging of atomic and nano structures are discussed, and the quantum optics formulation of diffraction is presented that reveals the remarkable quantum substructure of light. The unique power of x-rays in providing atom and chemical-bond specific information and separating charge and spin phenomena through x-ray polarization (dichroism) effects are highlighted. The book concludes with the discussion of many-photon or non-linear x-ray phenomena encountered with XFELs, such as stimulated emission and x-ray transparency.
