Book Geometric Method for Stability of Non Linear Elastic Thin Shells

Download or read book Geometric Method for Stability of Non Linear Elastic Thin Shells written by Jordanka Ivanova and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE This book deals with the new developments and applications of the geometric method to the nonlinear stability problem for thin non-elastic shells. There are no other published books on this subject except the basic ones of A. V. Pogorelov (1966,1967,1986), where variational principles defined over isometric surfaces, are postulated, and applied mainly to static and dynamic problems of elastic isotropic thin shells. A. V. Pogorelov (Harkov, Ukraine) was the first to provide in his monographs the geometric construction of the deformed shell surface in a post-critical stage and deriving explicitely the asymptotic formulas for the upper and lower critical loads. In most cases, these formulas were presented in a closed analytical form, and confirmed by experimental data. The geometric method by Pogorelov is one of the most important analytical methods developed during the last century. Its power consists in its ability to provide a clear geometric picture of the postcritical form of a deformed shell surface, successfully applied to a direct variational approach to the nonlinear shell stability problems. Until now most Pogorelov's monographs were written in Russian, which limited the diffusion of his ideas among the international scientific community. The present book is intended to assist and encourage the researches in this field to apply the geometric method and the related results to everyday engineering practice.

Book Static Free Vibration and Stability Analysis of Thin Elastic Shells of Revolution

Download or read book Static Free Vibration and Stability Analysis of Thin Elastic Shells of Revolution written by Arturs Kalnins and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was undertaken to present workable methods of analyses for thin, elastic shells of revolution, and to provide computer programs for performing such analyses. By means of these methods, the following problems for a thin, elastic shell of revolution can be solved: (1) stresses and deflections can be determined when the shell is subjected to arbitrary mechanical and/or thermal loads; (2) natural frequencies and mode shapes can be found for free vibration when the shell is subjected to or is free of prestress; (3) buckling loads, according to the classical stability theory, can be found when the shell is subjected to axisymmetric or sinusoidal nonsymmetric prestress. Book Nonlinear Behaviour and Stability of Thin Walled Shells

Download or read book Nonlinear Behaviour and Stability of Thin Walled Shells written by Natalia I. Obodan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the nonlinear behaviour of thin-wall shells (single- and multilayered with delamination areas) under various uniform and non-uniform loadings. The dependence of critical (buckling) load upon load variability is revealed to be highly non-monotonous, showing minima when load variability is close to the eigenmode variabilities of solution branching points of the respective nonlinear boundary problem. A novel numerical approach is employed to analyze branching points and to build primary, secondary, and tertiary bifurcation paths of the nonlinear boundary problem for the case of uniform loading. The load levels of singular points belonging to the paths are considered to be critical load estimates for the case of non-uniform loadings.

Book A Simplified Method of Elastic stability Analysis for Thin Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book A Simplified Method of Elastic stability Analysis for Thin Cylindrical Shells written by S. B. Batdorf and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equation for the equilibrium of cylindrical shells introduced by Donnell in NACA Report No. 479 to find the critical stresses of cylinders in torsion is applied to find critical stresses for cylinders with simply supported edges under other loading conditions. It is shown that by this method solutions may be obtained very easily and the results in each case may be expressed in terms of two nondimensional parameters, one dependent on the critical stress and the other essentially determined by the geometry of the cylinder. The influence of boundary condtions realted to edge displacements in the shell median surface is discussed. The accuracy of the shell median surface is discussed. The accuracy of the solutions found is established by comparing them with previous theoretical solutions solutions and with test results.

Book The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells

Download or read book The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells written by A. Libai and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells: One Spatial Dimension presents the foundation for the nonlinear theory of thermoelastic shells undergoing large strains and large rotations. This book discusses several relatively simple equations for practical application. Organized into six chapters, this book starts with an overview of the description of nonlinear elastic shell. This text then discusses the foundation of three-dimensional continuum mechanics that are relevant to the shell theory approach. Other chapters cover several topics, including birods, beamshells, and axishells that begins with a derivation of the equations of motion by a descent from the equations of balance of linear and rotational momentum of a three-dimensional material continuum. This book discusses as well the approach to deriving complete field equations for one- or two-dimensional continua from the integral equations of motion and thermodynamics of a three-dimensional continuum. The final chapter deals with the analysis of unishells. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, mathematicians, and scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

Book LOSS OF STABILITY OF THIN ELASTIC SHELLS UNDER THE EFFECT OF IMPULSIVE LOADS

Download or read book LOSS OF STABILITY OF THIN ELASTIC SHELLS UNDER THE EFFECT OF IMPULSIVE LOADS written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the stability of a cylindrical panel resting on a rectangular boundary, under the effect of a normal impulse which is characterized by a rapid increase in load to a certain magnitude and subsequent decrease according to the exponential law is discussed. The main objective is to construct a range of parameters which characterizes this impulse and in the presence of which snap-through buckling of the shell does not occur (i.e., stability 'in the large'). The effect of the initial compression and damping decrements on the boundary of the stability region, as well as on the maximum deflections attainable under the effect of the impulse were investigated. Partial differential equations of the nonlinear shell theory are, by applying the Papkovich-Galerkin method, reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations and solved on continuously-acting analog computers (the MN-7 computer was used).

Book Small Elastic Deformations of Thin Shells

Download or read book Small Elastic Deformations of Thin Shells written by P. Seide and published by Springer. This book was released on 1975-05-31 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade or so the theory of shells has undergone a tremendous increase in development. Formerly a subject of interest only to a few special ists and for which the literature was relatively smalI, the needs of structures for aerospace missions instigated a torrent of papers on all facets of the theory which also found application in the less glamorous earthbound shell struc tures important in everyday life. Some idea of the rapidity of the development can be gained from the fact that a bibliography* completed in 1953 listed some 1455 books and papers as the sum total ofthe literature on shell theory to that date. Three years later, however, a supplementt added another 884 papers to the list, an increase of 60 per cent in that short period of time. The number of papers published since these listings has increased to an extent that does not bear contemplation. Obviously no single volume could contain all that constitutes the theory of shells and so this book is restricted to that portion of the theory associated with small deformations of elastic shells. Plastic deformations of shells, which is hardly developed, and nonlinear deformations and stability, which would require at least aseparate volume, are thus excluded. Even with this restriction, however, the present volume represents a long overdue compro mise between completeness and finiteness. In making this compromise I have undoubtedly omitted discussions of many topics and references to many excellent papers which should have been included.
