Book Numerical Methods for Seakeeping Problems

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Seakeeping Problems written by Bettar Ould el Moctar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes currently applied and newly developed advanced numerical methods for wave-induced ship motions and loads. Besides well-established computational methods based on strip theory, panel methods and finite volume methods for unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), recent advances like a fully nonlinear Rankine panel method, URANS calculations including elastic hull deformations, and an improved method to predict added resistance in waves are explained in detail. Furthermore, statistical methods to assess extreme motions and loads are described both for linear and nonlinear responses in a stationary seaway as well as during long-term ship operations. Results of motions and loads, computed using the various methods, are compared with each other and with results of model experiments. Introductory chapters on fluid dynamics, motions of rigid and elastic ship hulls, numerical methods to compute fluid flows associated with wind waves, and the development and simulation of seaways complement the volume. The book will be of interest to post-graduate students, PhD candidates, as well as engineers in the field of naval architecture, ocean, and marine engineering.

Book On the Normal Modes of Nonlinear Coupled Ship Motions and Their Stability

Download or read book On the Normal Modes of Nonlinear Coupled Ship Motions and Their Stability written by W. D. Kinney and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of normal oscillations of a nonlinear conservative system is introduced and applied to the ship motion problem. In addition the stability of these normal modes is investigated and found to depend in general on the same parameters given in previous investigations. Since the normal oscillations represent a combined motion in the degrees of freedom concerned, an unstable mode does not necessarily imply unbounded motion in any one of the degrees of freedom. Since the system is assumed to be conservative, all displacements are necessarily finite. A knowledge of those straight normal modes which are stable is important since it is reasonable to conclude that the motion of ships in calm water will take place near those normal modes. In the absence of damping, the system is conservative, and hence the total energy of the system is a constant. This implies that all displacements and velocities must be finite. Because damping is always present, the system must ultimately reach a stable equilibrium position since energy is constantly dissipated from the system. (Author).

Book Time domain Simulation of Nonlinear Ship Motions and Wave Loads

Download or read book Time domain Simulation of Nonlinear Ship Motions and Wave Loads written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the assessment of the ability of a ship structure to withstand specified sea environments with an acceptable risk of failure, accurately predicted loads are vital. Of paramount importance are extreme loads on the hull structure, which usually occur when a ship undergoes large heaving & pitching motions in rough seas, sometimes accompanied by impacts between the bow & waves. This paper describes the application of strip theory to time domain calculations of non-linear ship motions and hull-girder loads in head seas. In this approach, the differential equations of ship motion are solved numerically by calculating hydrodynamic forces & coefficients at each time step by strip theory, taking into account nonlinearities relating to large relative motion between waves & the ship hull. The results indicate the usefulness of this approach compared to the conventional linear frequency-domain approach.

Book The Dynamics of Marine Craft

Download or read book The Dynamics of Marine Craft written by Edward M. Lewandowski and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theoretical treatment, as well as a summary of practical methods of computation, of the forces and moments that act on marine craft. Its aim is to provide the tools necessary for the prediction or simulation of craft motions in calm water and in waves. In addition to developing the required equations, the author gives relations that permit at least approximate evaluation of the coefficients so that useful results can be obtained. The approach begins with the equations of motion for rigid bodies, relative to fixed- and moving-coordinate systems; then, the hydrodynamic forces are examined, starting with hydrostatics and progressing to the forces on a moving vehicle in calm water and (after a review of water-wave theory) in waves. Several detailed examples are presented, including calculations of hydrostatics, horizontal- and vertical-plane directional stability, and wave-induced motions. Also included are unique discussions on various effects, such as fin-hull interactions, numerical stability of integrators, heavy torpedoes, and the dynamics of high-speed craft. The book is intended to be an introductory-level graduate text and a reference for the practicing professional.

Book Instability of Ship Motions in Longitudinal Waves Resulting from Nonlinear Coupling

Download or read book Instability of Ship Motions in Longitudinal Waves Resulting from Nonlinear Coupling written by C. S. HSU and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the effect of certain nonlinear coupling terms on the heave-pitchroll motions of a ship moving in longitudinal waves (either head or following waves). Linear damping terms were retained in the analysis because when forced ship motions under wave excitation are studied, the damping terms are essential elements of the problem. The analysis for the heave-pitch-roll system showed the existence of a type of instability such that the responses in pitch or roll may grow without bound even when the effect of damping was taken into account because of nonlinear coupling between heave and pitch and between heave and roll. This is in contrast to the results obtained from the linear theory in which, because of the presence of damping, all the responses are finite. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Large Amplitude Low Frequency Ship Motions

Download or read book Nonlinear Large Amplitude Low Frequency Ship Motions written by Nils Salvesen and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new nonlinear time-domain method for predicting large amplitude motions for a ship advancing in a seaway has been developed. The seaway is represented by a second-order Stokes wave. A consistent nonlinear theory is derived by assuming that the frequency of encounter is small. Results obtained by computer codes show good agreement with linear theory for small-amplitude waves, whereas large differences are found between the nonlinear method and linear theory for steeper waves. Book On the Stability of Ship Motion in Regular Oblique Waves

Download or read book On the Stability of Ship Motion in Regular Oblique Waves written by Mahmoud R. Haddara and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear equations of motion of a ship sailing in regular oblique waves are formulated and an analytical method is developed to obtain an approximate solution for them. The stability of the steady-state solution is investigated by examining the behavior of the solution of the equations of the first variation of the equations of motion. The study shows that the existence of unstable motion is predicted for certain cases if we take account of nonlinearities in the equations of motion. This instability is very sensitive to variations in the nonlinear damping coefficient in roll. (Author).
