Book excerpt: Response and stability of vessel rolling motion with strongly nonlinear softening stiffness will be studied in this dissertation using the methods of stochastic dynamical systems. As one of the most classic stability failure modes of vessel dynamics, large amplitude rolling motion in random beam waves has been studied in the past decades by many different research groups. Due to the strongly nonlinear softening stiffness and the stochastic excitation, there is still no general approach to predict the large amplitude rolling response and capsizing phenomena. We studied the rolling problem respectively using the shaping filter technique, stochastic averaging of the energy envelope and the stochastic Melnikov function. The shaping filter technique introduces some additional Gaussian filter variables to transform Gaussian white noise to colored noise in order to satisfy the Markov properties. In addition, we developed an automatic cumulant neglect tool to predict the response of the high dimensional dynamical system with higher order neglect. However, if the system has any jump phenomena, the cumulant neglect method may fail to predict the true response. The stochastic averaging of the energy envelope and the Melnikov function both have been applied to the rolling problem before, it is our first attempt to apply both approaches to the same vessel and compare their efficiency and capability. The inverse of the mean first passage time based on Markov theory and rate of phase space flux based on the stochastic Melnikov function are defined as two different, but analogous capsizing criteria. The effects of linear and nonlinear damping and wave characteristic frequency are studied to compare these two criteria. Further investigation of the relationship between the Markov and Melnikov based method is needed to explain the difference and similarity between the two capsizing criteria.

The basis of English translation of this book from its Chinese original manuscript was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision of the content was done by the author.

Valuable material here includes a study of system performance limitations as caused by the presence of non-minimum phase characteristics and actuator saturation. Chapter 10 has an interesting historical review of these marine control problems stretching back some thirty-years into the 1970s.

Book excerpt: In this research the stochastic nonlinear dynamic behaviors and probability density function of ship rolling are studied by nonlinear dynamic method and probability theory. The probability density function of rolling response is evaluated through solving the stochastic differential equations by using path integral method based on Gauss-Legendre interpolation scheme. The time-dependent probability of ship rolling restricted within the safe domain is provided and capsizing is investigated in the probability's view. The random differential equation of ships' rolling motion is established considering the nonlinear damping, nonlinear restoring moment, the white noise wave excitation, and the colored noise wave excitation. As an example, an ocean survey vessel T-AGOS is considered to sail in the seas of Pierson-Moskowitz wave spectrum. It is found that the probability decreases as time progresses and it decreases much more quickly for the high intensity of the noise. The ship will finally leave the safe domain and capsize in the probability's view. It is also shown the similarity of probability density contours between the case of white noise wave excitation and the case of colored noise wave excitation.
