Book Compactness Methods for Nonlinear Evolutions

Download or read book Compactness Methods for Nonlinear Evolutions written by Ioan I Vrabie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-07-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a self-contained and comprehensive account of the most significant existence results obtained over the past two decades referring to some remarkable classes of ill-posed problems governed by non-accretive operators. All the results are derived from several compactness arguments, due mainly to the author, and are suitably illustrated by examples arising from various concrete problems - for example, nonlinear diffusion, heat conduction in materials with memory, fluid dynamics, and vibrations of a string with memory. Reference is made to optimal control theory in order to emphasize the degree of applicability of abstract compactness methods. Special attention is paid to multivalued perturbations of m-accretive operators; this case is analyzed under appropriate assumptions in order to allow the use of the general results in the study of some specific problems of great practical interest: reaction-diffusion and closed loop systems. Some biographical comments and open problems are also included. This new edition contains a number of improvements, corrections and insertions which both simplify and update the material. The book will be of interest to graduate students and specialists working in abstract evolution equations, partial differential equations, reaction-diffusion systems and ill-posed problems. A knowledge of topology, functional analysis and ordinary differential equations to undergraduate level is assumed.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO/London Mathematical Society Advanced Study Institute held in Oxford from 25 July - 7 August 1982. The institute concerned the theory and applications of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, with emphasis on techniques appropriate to systems of more than one equation. Most of the lecturers and participants were analysts specializing in partial differential equations, but also present were a number of numerical analysts, workers in mechanics, and other applied mathematicians. The organizing committee for the institute was J.M. Ball (Heriot-Watt), T.B. Benjamin (Oxford), J. Carr (Heriot-Watt), C.M. Dafermos (Brown), S. Hildebrandt (Bonn) and J.S. pym (Sheffield) . The programme of the institute consisted of a number of courses of expository lectures, together with special sessions on different topics. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for the care they took in the preparation of their talks, and S.S. Antman, A.J. Chorin, J.K. Hale and J.E. Marsden for the organization of their special sessions. The institute was made possible by financial support from NATO, the London Mathematical Society, the u.S. Army Research Office, the u.S. Army European Research Office, and the u.S. National Science Foundation. The lectures were held in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, and residential accommodation was provided at Hertford College.

Book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Using Compactness

Download or read book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Using Compactness written by L. Tartar and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reviewing some general properties of Sobolev's spaces the author gives an abstract framework for Navier-Stokes equations. He examines some technical properties of the functional spaces introduced and proves existence of a solution: this is done using Galerkin's method and a compactness theorem for the limiting procedure. Uniqueness and regularity properties are proved in dimension 2. Bounded, periodic and stationary solutions are studied as well as stability of small periodic or stationary solutions. The same method is applied to 2 semilinear wave equations. This is done after studying the invariants of the wave equation with application to local decay of energy.

Book Concentration Compactness

Download or read book Concentration Compactness written by Kyril Tintarev and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentration compactness is an important method in mathematical analysis which has been widely used in mathematical research for two decades. This unique volume fulfills the need for a source book that usefully combines a concise formulation of the method, a range of important applications to variational problems, and background material concerning manifolds, non-compact transformation groups and functional spaces. Highlighting the role in functional analysis of invariance and, in particular, of non-compact transformation groups, the book uses the same building blocks, such as partitions of domain and partitions of range, relative to transformation groups, in the proofs of energy inequalities and in the weak convergence lemmas.

Book Order Structure and Topological Methods in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Order Structure and Topological Methods in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations written by Yihong Du and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maximum principle induces an order structure for partial differential equations, and has become an important tool in nonlinear analysis. This book is the first of two volumes to systematically introduce the applications of order structure in certain nonlinear partial differential equation problems. The maximum principle is revisited through the use of the Krein-Rutman theorem and the principal eigenvalues. Its various versions, such as the moving plane and sliding plane methods, are applied to a variety of important problems of current interest. The upper and lower solution method, especially its weak version, is presented in its most up-to-date form with enough generality to cater for wide applications. Recent progress on the boundary blow-up problems and their applications are discussed, as well as some new symmetry and Liouville type results over half and entire spaces. Some of the results included here are published for the first time. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Krein-Rutman Theorem and the Principal Eigenvalue (128 KB). Contents: KreinOCoRutman Theorem and the Principal Eigenvalue; Maximum Principles Revisited; The Moving Plane Method; The Method of Upper and Lower Solutions; The Logistic Equation; Boundary Blow-Up Problems; Symmetry and Liouville Type Results Over Half and Entire Spaces. Book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations written by W. F. Ames and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations: A Symposium on Methods of Solution is a collection of papers presented at the seminar on methods of solution for nonlinear partial differential equations, held at the University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware on December 27-29, 1965. The sessions are divided into four Symposia: Analytic Methods, Approximate Methods, Numerical Methods, and Applications. Separating 19 lectures into chapters, this book starts with a presentation of the methods of similarity analysis, particularly considering the merits, advantages and disadvantages of the methods. The subsequent chapters describe the fundamental ideas behind the methods for the solution of partial differential equation derived from the theory of dynamic programming and from finite systems of ordinary differential equations. These topics are followed by reviews of the principles to the lubrication approximation and compressible boundary-layer flow computation. The discussion then shifts to several applications of nonlinear partial differential equations, including in electrical problems, two-phase flow, hydrodynamics, and heat transfer. The remaining chapters cover other solution methods for partial differential equations, such as the synergetic approach. This book will prove useful to applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers.

Book Transformation Methods For Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Transformation Methods For Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations written by Dominic G B Edelen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-06-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to provide research workers in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering with practical geometric methods for solving systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. The first two chapters provide an introduction to the more or less classical results of Lie dealing with symmetries and similarity solutions. The results, however, are presented in the context of contact manifolds rather than the usual jet bundle formulation and provide a number of new conclusions. The remaining three chapters present essentially new methods of solution that are based on recent publications of the authors'. The text contains numerous fully worked examples so that the reader can fully appreciate the power and scope of the new methods. In effect, the problem of solving systems of nonlinear partial differential equations is reduced to the problem of solving families of autonomous ordinary differential equations. This allows the graphs of solutions of the system of partial differential equations to be realized as certain leaves of a foliation of an appropriately defined contact manifold. In fact, it is often possible to obtain families of solutions whose graphs foliate an open subset of the contact manifold. These ideas are extended in the final chapter by developing the theory of transformations that map a foliation of a contact manifold onto a foliation. This analysis gives rise to results of surprising depth and practical significance. In particular, an extended Hamilton-Jacobi method for solving systems of partial differential equations is obtained.
