Book Nonlinear Optical Studies of Molecular Adsorbates

Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Studies of Molecular Adsorbates written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the possibility of employing laser interaction with surfaces as a surface diagnostic tool has attracted a great deal of attention. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) have been proven to be most effective and versatile for surface and interfacial studies. By symmetry, these processes are forbidden in media with centrosymmetry, and can therefore be highly surface-specific. They have the advantages of being capable of high spatial temporal and spectral resolutions, suitable for in-situ, remote sensing of samples in hostile environment and applicable to all interfaces accessible to light. Indeed, they have been applied with great success to a large variety of surface and interfacial problems: probing adsorption and desorption of molecules from surfaces, measuring average molecular orientation of adsorbates, monitoring surface symmetry and surface phase transitions, conducting surface microscopy and spectroscopy, and many others. Here, we shall describe a few experiments recently carried out in our laboratory using these techniques.

Book Linear and Nonlinear Optical Studies of Molecular Adsorption to Silica liquid Interfaces

Download or read book Linear and Nonlinear Optical Studies of Molecular Adsorption to Silica liquid Interfaces written by Brittany Lauren Gray Woods and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption mechanisms at buried interfaces are difficult to predict a priori, with many interactions to consider including those between the substrate and solvent, the substrate and adsorbate, and the solvent and adsorbate. Studies described in this thesis examine the roles these variables have on controlling interfacial behavior, including molecular adsorption and aggregation at solid/liquid interfaces. Specifically, second harmonic generation (SHG) was employed to characterize adsorption environments and adsorption energies at different silica/liquid interfaces, due to the technique's surface specificity. Additionally, time resolved fluorescence was used to quantify emission lifetimes within these same interfacial regions. By systematically changing the substrate, solvent identity, and adsorbate functionality, the impact of each contribution was identified and quantified. Initial studies examined the role played by interfacial pH in controlling adsorption. Above pH 5, silica surfaces become negatively charged and promote two distinct adsorption mechanisms. Adsorption due to these mechanisms requires very long equilibration times (>3hrs). Subsequent experiments studied the role played by solvent identity on interfacial solvation. At a methanol/silica interface a non-polar interfacial environment was produced, independent of solute choice. Non-polar solvents conversely create polar interfacial solvation environments. At these different solid/liquid interfaces, similarly structured coumarin dyes, C151 and C152, were examined. Slight changes in structure lead to differing behaviors at the surface, C151 terminates at monolayer coverage while C152 shows clear signs of multilayer formation. This observation is explained by the difference in hydrogen bonding opportunities for each adsorbate: C151 can accept and donate H-bonds while C152 can only accept H-bonds, resulting in more degrees of freedom for C152 at an interface and thus the possibility of aggregation.

Book Studies of Molecular Adsorbates at Interfaces by Optical Second harmonic Generation p nitrobenzoic Acid

Download or read book Studies of Molecular Adsorbates at Interfaces by Optical Second harmonic Generation p nitrobenzoic Acid written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is surface-specific and has the sensitivity to detect submonolayers of molecules. It can be applied to study molecular adsorbates at the interface between any two centrosymmetric media. This has been demonstrated by using dye and p-nitrobenzoic acid (PNBA) molecules adsorbed on smooth fused quartz substrates as examples. With resonant SHG, the S0 A.-->. S2 transition of the adsorbed dye molecules was measured. From the polarization dependence of the SHG, the orientation of PNBA at both the air/quartz and the ethanol/quartz interfaces was deduced. By varying the concentration of PNBA in ethanol, an adsorption isotherm for PNBA at the ethanol/quartz interfaces was also obtained.

Download or read book Organic Molecules for Nonlinear Optics and Photonics written by J. Messier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photonics is being labelled by many as the technology for the 21st century. Because of the structural flexibility both at the molecular and bulk levels, organic materials are emerging as a very important class of nonlinear optical materials to be used for generating necessary nonlinear optical functions for the technology of photonics. Since the last NATO advanced research workshop on "Polymers for Nonlinear Optics"held in June 1988, at Nice - Sophia Antipolis, France. there has been a tremendous growth of interest worldwide and important development in this field. Significant progress has been made in theoretical modeling, material development, experimental studies and device concepts utilizing organic materials. These important recent developments provided the rationale for organizing the workshop on "Organic Materials for Nonlinear Optics and Photonics" which was held in La Rochelle, France, in August 1990. This proceeding is the outcome of the workshop held in La Rochelle. The objective of the workshop was to bring together scientists and engineers of varied backgrounds working in this field in order to assess the current status of this field by presenting significant recent developments and make recommendations on future directions of research. The workshop was multidisciplinary as it had contributions from chemists, physicists, materials scientists and device engineers. The participants were both from industries and universities. The workshop included plenary lectures by leading international scientists in this field, contributed research papers and a poster session. Panel discussion groups were organized to summarize important developments and to project future directions.

Book excerpt: The Fourth USA-USSR Symposium. on The Physics of Optical Phenomena and Their Use as Probes of Matter, was held in Irvine, California, January 23-27, 1990. Participating in the Symposium were 22 scientists from the USSR and 29 from the USA. In addition, to provide an international dimension to this Symposium without, however, compromising significantly its essentially binational character, 7 non-US and non-USSR scientists were invited to take part in it. The present volume is the proceedings of that Symposium, and contains all manuscripts received prior to August 1, 1990, representing. scientific contributions presented. A few manuscripts were not received, but for completeness the corresponding abstract is printed.. Three previous USA/USSR Binational Symposia on related topics have been held, viz. "Theory of Light Scattering in Condensed Matter" (Moscow, 1975), "Light Scattering in Solids" (New York, 1979), and "Laser Optics of Condensed Matter" (Leningrad, 1987). These meetings were evaluated by the participants as highly successful and provided invaluable oppor tunities for researchers to exchange information and to initiate colla borative work which led to research visits by US physicist to Soviet laboratories, and vice versa, and which continue to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics and chemistry of surfaces is becoming more and more important as an exciting field of basic research as well as in devices and technology. The diagnoses and the conditioning of surfaces and studies of molecular interac tions with surfaces have made large advancements by using laser techniques. With its divisional meeting 1983 the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society tried to set up a forum where the latest ideas and achievements could be presented and discussed. The wide range of topics (gen eral surface spectroscopy, surface-enhanced optical processes, laser surface spectroscopy, laser-induced processes at surfaces) was deliberately chosen to provide an opportunity for specialists from one field to get acquainted with the techniques and results from others. This meeting took place in Mauterndorf, Austria, from March 9th to March 11th, 1983. Mauterndorf is a small village in the Austrian Alps, situated in a well-known skiing area. The conference was held in a medieval castle adapt ed as a conference center. These stimulating surroundings guaranteed a vivid exchange of ideas among the 98 participants from 17 nations. Among the numerous people engaged in the organization, our special thanks go to Mrs. I. Mandl and Mrs. B. Seeberg for doing a superb job in implementing the meeting arrangements and efficiently prompting the authors to deliver their manuscripts for this volume in time.
