Book On the Normal Modes of Nonlinear Coupled Ship Motions and Their Stability

Download or read book On the Normal Modes of Nonlinear Coupled Ship Motions and Their Stability written by W. D. Kinney and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of normal oscillations of a nonlinear conservative system is introduced and applied to the ship motion problem. In addition the stability of these normal modes is investigated and found to depend in general on the same parameters given in previous investigations. Since the normal oscillations represent a combined motion in the degrees of freedom concerned, an unstable mode does not necessarily imply unbounded motion in any one of the degrees of freedom. Since the system is assumed to be conservative, all displacements are necessarily finite. A knowledge of those straight normal modes which are stable is important since it is reasonable to conclude that the motion of ships in calm water will take place near those normal modes. In the absence of damping, the system is conservative, and hence the total energy of the system is a constant. This implies that all displacements and velocities must be finite. Because damping is always present, the system must ultimately reach a stable equilibrium position since energy is constantly dissipated from the system. (Author).

Book On the Unstable Rolling Motions of Ships Resulting from Nonlinear Coupling with Pitch Including the Effect of Damping in Roll

Download or read book On the Unstable Rolling Motions of Ships Resulting from Nonlinear Coupling with Pitch Including the Effect of Damping in Roll written by W. D. Kinney and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations of motion for a ship pitching and rolling in a calm sea were found to be coupled by means of a second order term in the rolling equation of motion. When the pitching motion is simple harmonic the equation of motion in roll is of the Mathieu type, the two independent parameters being pitching amplitude and frequency. The stability diagram of the Mathieu equation including the effect of linear damping is determined theoretically and verified by solving the Mathieu equation on an analogue computer. In experiments with one ship model form, it was found that the transition from stable to unstable motion occurred for the value of the parameters predicted by the theory, and that the rolling motions obtained experimentally closely resembled the computer solutions. It was concluded that (1) unstable rolling motions are possible for very small pitching amplitudes, (2) when the natural frequency of pitch is twice that of roll the amplitude required to produce unstable motion is a minimum, and (3) for any pitching frequency, the greater the amount of damping, the greater the amplitude of pitching must become to produce unstable rolling motions. Book Instability of Ship Motions in Longitudinal Waves Resulting from Nonlinear Coupling

Download or read book Instability of Ship Motions in Longitudinal Waves Resulting from Nonlinear Coupling written by C. S. HSU and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the effect of certain nonlinear coupling terms on the heave-pitchroll motions of a ship moving in longitudinal waves (either head or following waves). Linear damping terms were retained in the analysis because when forced ship motions under wave excitation are studied, the damping terms are essential elements of the problem. The analysis for the heave-pitch-roll system showed the existence of a type of instability such that the responses in pitch or roll may grow without bound even when the effect of damping was taken into account because of nonlinear coupling between heave and pitch and between heave and roll. This is in contrast to the results obtained from the linear theory in which, because of the presence of damping, all the responses are finite. (Author).

Book Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability

Download or read book Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability written by D. Vassalos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-14 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely publicised disasters serve as a reminder to the maritime profession of the eminent need for enhancing safety cost-effectively and as a strong indicator of the existing gaps in the stability safety of ships and ocean vehicles. The problem of ship stability is so complex that practically meaningful solutions are feasible only through close international collaboration and concerted efforts by the maritime community, deriving from sound scientific approaches. Responding to this and building on an established track record of co-operative research between UK and Japan, a Collaborative Research Project (CRP) was launched in 1995.This volume includes selected material from the first four workshops: 1st in University of Strathclyde, July 1995 organized by Professor Vassalos; 2nd in Osaka Japan, Osaka University, November 1996 organized by Professor Masami Hamamoto; 3rd in Crete Greece, Ship Design Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA-SDL), October 1997 organized by Professor Apostolos Papanikolaou; and 4th in Newfoundland Canada, Institute for Marine Dynamics, September 1998 organized by David Molyneux. It contains 46 papers that represent all currently available expertise on ship stability, spanning 17 countries from around the world. The framework adopted for grouping the papers aims to cover broad areas of ship stability in a way that it provides a template for future volumes.

Book Structural Dynamic Systems Computational Techniques and Optimization

Download or read book Structural Dynamic Systems Computational Techniques and Optimization written by Cornelius T. Leondes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-05-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are various techniques to optimize either structural parameters, or structural controllers, but there are not many techniques that can simultaneously optimize the structural parameters and controller. The advantage of integrating the structural and controller optimization problems is that structure and controller interaction is taken into account in the design process and a more efficient overall design (lower control force/lighter weight) can be achieved, and also multidisciplinary design optimization can be performed. The down side is that the combined optimization problem is more difficult to formulate and solve, and computations are increased. This volume is a comprehensive treatment of dynamic analysis and control techniques in structural dynamic systems and the wide variety of issues and techniques that fall within this broad area, including the interactions between structural control systems and structural system parameters.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics of Piecewise Constant Systems and Implementation of Piecewise Constant Arguments

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics of Piecewise Constant Systems and Implementation of Piecewise Constant Arguments written by Liming Dai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piecewise constant systems exist in widely expanded areas such as engineering, physics, and mathematics. Extraordinary and complex characteristics of piecewise constant systems have been reported in recent years. This book provides the methodologies for analyzing and assessing nonlinear piecewise constant systems on a theoretically and practically sound basis. Recently developed approaches for theoretically analyzing and numerically solving the nonlinear piecewise constant dynamic systems are reviewed. A new greatest integer argument with a piecewise constant function is utilized for nonlinear dynamic analyses and for establishing a novel criterion in diagnosing irregular and chaotic solutions from the regular solutions of a nonlinear dynamic system. The newly established piecewise constantization methodology and its implementation in analytically solving for nonlinear dynamic problems are also presented.
