Book Introduction to Nonlinear Fluid Plasma Waves

Download or read book Introduction to Nonlinear Fluid Plasma Waves written by B.K Shivamoggi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of nonlinear effects occur in a plasma. First, there are the wave steepening effects which can occur in any fluid in which the propagation speed depends upon the wave-amplitude. In a dispersive medium this can lead to classes of nonlinear waves which may have stationary solutions like solitons and shocks. Because the plasma also acts like an inherently nonlinear dielectric resonant interactions among waves lead to exchange of energy among them. Further, an electromagnetic wave interacting with a plasma may parametrically excite other waves in the plasma. A large-amplitude Langmuir wave undergoes a modulational instability which arises through local depressions in plasma density and the corresponding increases in the energy density of the wave electric field. Whereas a field collapse occurs in two and three dimensions, in a one-dimensional case, spatially localized stationary field structures called Langmuir solitons can result. Many other plasma waves like upper-hybrid waves, lower-hybrid waves etc. can also undergo a modulational instability and produce localized field structures. A new type of nonlinear effect comes into play when an electromagnetic wave propagating through a plasma is strong enough to drive the electrons to relativistic speeds. This leads to a propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a normally overdense plasma, and the coupling of the electromagnetic wave to a Langmuir wave in the plasma. The relativistic mass variation of the electrons moving in an intense electromagnetic wave can also lead to a modulational instability of the latter.

Book Nonlinear Mode Coupling Theory of the Lower Hybrid Drift Instability

Download or read book Nonlinear Mode Coupling Theory of the Lower Hybrid Drift Instability written by J. F. Drake and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonlinear mode coupling theory of the lower-hybrid-drift instability is presented. A two-dimensional nonlinear wave equation is derived which describes lower-hybrid drift wave turbulence in the plane transverse to B (k.B = 0), and which is valid for finite beta, collisional and collisionless plasmas. The instability saturates by transferring energy from growing, long wavelength modes to damped, short wavelength modes. Detailed numerical results are presented which compare favorably to both recent computer simulations and experimental observations. Applications of this theory to space plasmas, the earth's magnetotail and the equatorial F region ionosphere, are discussed. (Author).

Book Dynamic Non linear Wave Propagation in Ionized Media 9 a Non linear Coupling Mechanism for Generation of Very Low Frequency Waves

Download or read book Dynamic Non linear Wave Propagation in Ionized Media 9 a Non linear Coupling Mechanism for Generation of Very Low Frequency Waves written by K. H. B. Wilhelmsson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of mixed-frequency fields by interaction of a longitudinal space-charge wave, carried by an electron stream through a plasma, and an electromagnetic wave - or a gyro-wave is studied. The direction of propagation of the interacting waves, of different frequencies, is assumed to coincide with that of a static magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the generated difference-frequency field may propagate as an electron gyro-wave or possibly as an ion gyro-wave or even hydromagnetic wave, if the difference-frequency is sufficiently small and the effect of collisions negligible. The investigation is limited to the case of an infinitely extended homogeneous medium. (Author).

Book The Parametric Coupling of Modes of Propagation in Nonlinear Media

Download or read book The Parametric Coupling of Modes of Propagation in Nonlinear Media written by Edward S. Cassedy and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processes of wave propagation may be understood in terms of interactions between waves at different frequencies, such as mixing and harmonic generation. Linearized models of such behavior, useful for studying interactions of two or more small-signal waves in the presence of a high-intensity pumping wave have been studied by this and other authors in the past. The models so treated have dealt with a single mode of propagation. The present work deals with a case of two basic modes of propagation. Results of rigorous analysis demonstrate a pattern of operation which is a generalization of that found for single-mode models. Wave interactions of both the stable and the unstable type are found, in addition to interactions identified with nonlinear shock waves. Shock wave effects are found to be associated with each of the two characteristic velocities of the modes involved. Representative results of dispersion functions and amplitude dependence for partial wave components of the time-space harmonics are also displayed. (Author).

Book Waveguide Propagation of Nonlinear Waves

Download or read book Waveguide Propagation of Nonlinear Waves written by Sergey Leble and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the peculiarities of nonlinear wave propagation in waveguides and explains how the stratification depends on the waveguide and confinement. An example of this is an optical fibre that does not allow light to pass through a density jump. The book also discusses propagation in the nonlinear regime, which is characterized by a specific waveform and amplitude, to demonstrate so-called solitonic behaviour. In this case, a wave may be strongly localized, and propagates with a weak change in shape. In the waveguide case there are additional contributions of dispersion originating from boundary or asymptotic conditions. Offering concrete guidance on solving application problems, this essentially (more than twice) expanded second edition includes various aspects of guided propagation of nonlinear waves as well as new topics like solitonic behaviour of one-mode and multi-mode excitation and propagation and plasma waveguides, propagation peculiarities of electromagnetic waves in metamaterials, new types of dispersion, dissipation, electromagnetic waveguides, planetary waves and plasma waves interaction. The key feature of the solitonic behaviour is based on Coupled KdV and Coupled NS systems. The systems are derived in this book and solved numerically with the proof of stability and convergence. The domain wall dynamics of ferromagnetic microwaveguides and Bloch waves in nano-waveguides are also included with some problems of magnetic momentum and charge transport.
