Book Elliptic Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Elliptic Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations written by Thomas H. Otway and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a concise introduction to the partial differential equations which change from elliptic to hyperbolic type across a smooth hypersurface of their domain. These are becoming increasingly important in diverse sub-fields of both applied mathematics and engineering, for example: • The heating of fusion plasmas by electromagnetic waves • The behaviour of light near a caustic • Extremal surfaces in the space of special relativity • The formation of rapids; transonic and multiphase fluid flow • The dynamics of certain models for elastic structures • The shape of industrial surfaces such as windshields and airfoils • Pathologies of traffic flow • Harmonic fields in extended projective space They also arise in models for the early universe, for cosmic acceleration, and for possible violation of causality in the interiors of certain compact stars. Within the past 25 years, they have become central to the isometric embedding of Riemannian manifolds and the prescription of Gauss curvature for surfaces: topics in pure mathematics which themselves have important applications. Elliptic−Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations is derived from a mini-course given at the ICMS Workshop on Differential Geometry and Continuum Mechanics held in Edinburgh, Scotland in June 2013. The focus on geometry in that meeting is reflected in these notes, along with the focus on quasilinear equations. In the spirit of the ICMS workshop, this course is addressed both to applied mathematicians and to mathematically-oriented engineers. The emphasis is on very recent applications and methods, the majority of which have not previously appeared in book form.

Book Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems

Download or read book Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems written by S.N. Antontsev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past several decades, the study of free boundary problems has been a very active subject of research occurring in a variety of applied sciences. What these problems have in common is their formulation in terms of suitably posed initial and boundary value problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. Such problems arise, for example, in the mathematical treatment of the processes of heat conduction, filtration through porous media, flows of non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, semiconductors, and so on. The growing interest in these problems is reflected by the series of meetings held under the title "Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications" (Ox ford 1974, Pavia 1979, Durham 1978, Montecatini 1981, Maubuisson 1984, Irsee 1987, Montreal 1990, Toledo 1993, Zakopane 1995, Crete 1997, Chiba 1999). From the proceedings of these meetings, we can learn about the different kinds of mathematical areas that fall within the scope of free boundary problems. It is worth mentioning that the European Science Foundation supported a vast research project on free boundary problems from 1993 until 1999. The recent creation of the specialized journal Interfaces and Free Boundaries: Modeling, Analysis and Computation gives us an idea of the vitality of the subject and its present state of development. This book is a result of collaboration among the authors over the last 15 years.

Book An Introduction to Applied Matrix Analysis

Download or read book An Introduction to Applied Matrix Analysis written by Xiao Qing Jin and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that most problems in science and engineering eventually progress into matrix problems. This book gives an elementary introduction to applied matrix theory and it also includes some new results obtained in recent years. The book consists of eight chapters. It includes perturbation and error analysis; the conjugate gradient method for solving linear systems; preconditioning techniques; and least squares algorithms based on orthogonal transformations, etc. The last two chapters include some latest development in the area. In Chap. 7, we construct optimal preconditioners for functions of matrices. More precisely, let f be a function of matrices. Given a matrix A, there are two choices of constructing optimal preconditioners for f(A). Properties of these preconditioners are studied for different functions. In Chap. 8, we study the Bottcher–Wenzel conjecture and discuss related problems. This is a textbook for senior undergraduate or junior graduate students majoring in science and engineering. The material is accessible to students who, in various disciplines, have basic linear algebra, calculus, numerical analysis, and computing knowledge. The book is also useful to researchers in computational science who are interested in applied matrix theory.
