Abstract: Model order reduction (MOR) is one of the general techniques in the fields of computeraided design (CAD) and electronic design automation (EDA) which accelerates the flow of electronic simulations and verifications. By MOR, the original circuit, which is described by a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), can be trimmed into a much smaller reduced-order model (ROM) in terms of the number of state variables, with approximately the same input-output (I/O) characteristics. Hence, simulations using this ROM will be much more efficient and effective than using the original system. In this thesis, a novel and fast approach of computing the projection matrices serving high-order Volterra transfer functions in the context of weakly and strongly nonlinear MOR is proposed. The innovation is to carry out an association of multivariate Laplace-domain variables in high-order multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transfer functions to generate univariate single-s transfer functions. In contrast to conventional projection-based nonlinear MOR which finds projection subspaces about every si in multivariate transfer functions, only that about a single s is required in the proposed approach. This translates into much more compact nonlinear ROMs without compromising accuracy. Different algorithms and their extensions are devised in this thesis. Extensive numerical examples are given to prove and verify the algorithms. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5194797 Subjects: Electronic circuits - Mathematical models

Book Vito Volterra Symposium on Mathematical Models in Biology

Download or read book Vito Volterra Symposium on Mathematical Models in Biology written by Claudio Barigozzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of organizing a symposium on mathematical models in biology came to some colleagues, members of the Accademia dei Lincei, in order to point out the importance of mathematics not only for supplying instruments for the elaboration and the evaluation of experimental data, but also for discussing the possibility of developing mathematical formulations of biological problems. This appeared particularly appropriate for genetics, where mathematical models have been of historical importance. When the organizing work had started, it became clear to us that the classic studies of Vito Volterra (who was also a Member of the Academy and its President from 1923 to 1926) might be con sidered a further reason to have the meeting in Rome at the Accademia dei Lincei; thus the meeting is dedicated to his memory. Biology, in its manifold aspects proved to Se ~ difficult object for an exhaustive approach; thus it became necessary for practical reasons to make a choice of problems. Therefore not all branches of biology have been represented. The proceedings of the symposium, as a whole, assume a knowledge of mathematics on the part of the reader; however the problem of teaching mathematics to biologists was the subject of a round table discussion, not recorded in these proceedings. On this were brought up some basic points to be recommended to teachers on an international basis, and a statement was prepared for circulation. Book Volterra Transfer Functions from Pulse Tests for Mildly Nonlinear Channels

Download or read book Volterra Transfer Functions from Pulse Tests for Mildly Nonlinear Channels written by V. K. Jain and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multichannel communications systems are often mildly nonlinear, hence they are characterizable by the Volterra series. The methodology described herein represents a numerical implementation of an RADC in-house concept formulation for pulse testing linear and quadratic Volterra systems. This analytic formulation, in terms of the appropriate convolutions, expressed the linear and quadratic responses to square pulse input waveforms. These responses contain, in canonic form, the system poles and residues which are then determined by suitable identification methods and algorithms to provide the Volterra Transfer functions. In this paper we describe a method for determining the Volterra transfer-functions H1 (s1) and H2 (s1, s2) from pulse tests. The method involves two transient tests in the laboratory, followed by analysis by the computer. The latter consists of (a) pole determination using the pencil-of-functions method, and (b) computation of the residues by a least-squares technique. Advantages of the method include the rapidity of the laboratory tests, as contrasted with traditional frequency-scan approaches, and the explicit determination of the transfer functions. Furthermore, the method is readily extendible to H3 (s1, s2, s3) and even to higher order transfer functions, although the computations grow very rapidly for these cases. (Author).

Book Time varying Volterra Analysis of Nonlinear Circuits

Download or read book Time varying Volterra Analysis of Nonlinear Circuits written by Hassan Sarbishaei and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's advances in communication systems and VLSI circuits increases the performance requirements and complexity of circuits. The performance of RF and mixed-signal circuits is normally limited by the nonlinear behavior of the transistors used in the design. This makes simulation of nonlinear circuits more important. Volterra series is a method used for simulation of mildly nonlinear circuits. Using Volterra series the response of the nonlinear circuit is converted into a sum of multiple linear circuit responses. Thus, using Volterra series, simulation of nonlinear circuits in frequency-domain analysis becomes possible. However, Volterra series is not able to simulate strongly nonlinear circuits such as saturated Power Amplifiers. In this thesis, a new time-varying Volterra analysis is presented. The time-varying Volterra analysis is the generalization of conventional Volterra analysis where instead of using a DC expansion point a time-varying waveform has been used. Employing a time-varying expansion waveform for Volterra analysis, time-varying Volterra achieves better accuracy than conventional Volterra. The time-varying expansion waveforms are derived using a fast pre-analysis of the circuit. Using numerical examples, it has been shown that the time-varying Volterra is capable of simulating nonlinear circuits with better accuracy than conventional Volterra analysis. The time-varying Volterra analysis in both time and frequency domains are discussed in this thesis.
