Book Nonlinear Buckling of Rectangular Plates

Download or read book Nonlinear Buckling of Rectangular Plates written by Louis Bauer and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear deflections of a thin elastic simply-supported rectangular plate are studied. The plate is deformed by a compressive thrust applied along the short edges. For the boundary value problem considered it is proven that the plate cannot buckle for thrusts less than or equal to the lowest eigenvalue of the linearized buckling problem. For larger thrusts approximate solutions of the von Karman equations are obtained by an accelerated iteration method. Each iterate is numerically evaluated by a finite difference procedure. Using this method approximate solutions are obtained for thrusts considerably larger than the lowest eigenvalue. These solutions bifurcate from the eigenvalues of the linearized problem. In addition, an asymmetric solution is found which appears to branch from a previously bifurcated solution. The extensive numerical results are used to study the formation of boundary layers and the related problem of the plate's ultimate load. On the basis of the numerical results, an energy mechanism is proposed to explain a mode-jumping phenomenon which has been previously observed in experiments. (Author).

Book Loads and Deformations of Buckled Rectangular Plates

Download or read book Loads and Deformations of Buckled Rectangular Plates written by Manuel Stein and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear large-deflection equations of von Kármán for plates are converted into a set of linear equations by expanding the displacements into a power series in terms of an arbitrary parameter. The post-buckling behavior of simply supported rectangular plates subjected to longitudinal compression and subject to a uniform temperature rise is investigated in detail by solving the first few of the equations. Experimental data are presented for the compression problem. Comparisons are made for total shortening and local strains and deflections which indicate good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.

Book Nonlinear Buckled States of Rectangular Plates

Download or read book Nonlinear Buckled States of Rectangular Plates written by George H. Knightly and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A constructive method is developed to establish the existence of buckled states of a thin, flat elastic plate that is rectangular in shape, simply supported along its edges, and subjected to a constant compressive thrust applied normal to its two short edges. Under the assumption that the stress function and the deformation of the plate are described by the nonlinear von Karman equation, the approach used yields information regarding not only the number of buckled states near an eigenvalue of the linearized problem, but also the continuous dependence of such states on the load parameter and the possible selection of that buckled state preferred by the plate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

Download or read book Linear Theory written by A. Cemal Eringen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastodynamics, Volume II: Linear Theory is a continuation of Volume I and discusses the dynamical theory of linear isotropic elasticity. The volume deals with the fundamental theorems regarding elastodynamics and the different mathematical methods of solution and their employment in one, two, and three dimensions. The text outlines the fundamentals of linear elastodynamics and explains basic equations, displacement formulation, stress formulation, and the uniqueness theorem of elastodynamics. The book also investigates elastodynamic problems involving one-space dimension in governing boundaries, equations, and initial conditions. The book then compares two-dimensional problems as being subject to more precise mathematical analysis compared to three-dimensional situations by using scalar wave equations. The text then analyzes elastodynamic problems in three space dimensions when the solution depends on the condition of separability of the vector wave equation and the satisfaction of the boundary conditions. The diffraction of elastic waves is also described using two approaches: the integral equation method or the Eigen function technique. The book can prove valuable to researchers and practitioners whose work involves advanced statistics, general physics, and thermodynamics.

It is intended for people working or interested in areas of structural stability under mechanical and/or thermal loads. Some basic knowledge in classical mechanics and theory of elasticity is required.
