Book Nonlinear Acoustics Long Range Underwater Propagation Noncollinear Interaction Reflection and Refraction and Subharmonic Generation

Download or read book Nonlinear Acoustics Long Range Underwater Propagation Noncollinear Interaction Reflection and Refraction and Subharmonic Generation written by David T. Blackstock and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (1) Nonlinear effects in underwater propagation. Two analytical-computational projects in this area are: (a) long range propagation of finite-amplitude pulses in a stratified, dissipative ocean, and (b) the pressure, temperature, and salinity dependence of the nonlinearity coefficient beta and related quantities. (2) Nonlinear, noncollinear interaction of sound waves. Two analytical and experimental studies of interaction in a rectangular waveguide are described. First, a monochromatic wave is generated in the 1,0 model of the waveguide, and distortion produces a second harmonic component in the 2,0 mode, a third harmonic component in the 3,0 mode, etc. Second, two primary waves are generated, a low frequency wave in the 0,0 mode and a high frequency wave in the 1,0 mode. Of main interest are the sum and difference frequency waves produced by the nonlinear interaction of the two primaries. In a third study, which is not limited to waveguides, the angular dependence of the nonlinearity coefficient beta was investigated. (3) Reflection and refraction of finite-amplitude sound at a plane interface between two fluids. The purpose of this work is to determine two fluids. The purpose of this work is to determine the applicability of Snell's law, the law of specular reflection, and other familiar small-signal results when the incident wave is of finite amplitude. (4) Investigation of subharmonic generation and chaos in an acoustical resonance tube.

Book Nonlinear Acoustics Long Range Underwater Propagation Air Filled Porous Materials and Noncollinear Interaction in a Waveguide

Download or read book Nonlinear Acoustics Long Range Underwater Propagation Air Filled Porous Materials and Noncollinear Interaction in a Waveguide written by David T. Blackstock and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on three topics in nonlinear acoustics is described. (1) Nonlinear effects in long range underwater propagation. The equations of nonlinear geometrical acoustics have been derived from the general equations of fluid mechanics for and inhomogeneous fluid. And analytical solution for the waveform of an arbitrary pressure signal traveling along a ray path has been implemented by a computer program. Not included in the program are effects of reflection and focusing. (2) Nonlinear effects in air-filled bulk porous materials. Theory and experiments on the propagation of intense airborne sound in bulk porous materials are described. The primary source of nonlinearity is the velocity dependent resistivity of the materials. (3) Nonlinear interaction in rectangular waveguide. Two problems are considered, (a) distortion of a wave launched as a single tone in the 1,0 mode of the waveguide, and (b) noncollinear interaction of two noncollinear tones, one a low frequency wave in the 0,0 mode, the other a high frequency wave in the 1,0 mode. Keywords include: Nonlinear acoustics; Long range propagation; Inhomogeneous fluid; Porous materials (air-filled); Waveform distortion; Rectangular waveguide; Noncollinear interaction; and Coefficient of nonlinearity.

Book Sound Propagation

Download or read book Sound Propagation written by Yang-Hann Kim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-08-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sound Propagation: An Impedance Based Approach, Professor Yang-Hann Kim introduces acoustics and sound fields by using the concept of impedance. Kim starts with vibrations and waves, demonstrating how vibration can be envisaged as a kind of wave, mathematically and physically. One-dimensional waves are used to convey the fundamental concepts. Readers can then understand wave propagation in terms of characteristic and driving point impedance. The essential measures for acoustic waves, such as dB scale, octave scale, acoustic pressure, energy, and intensity, are explained. These measures are all realized by one-dimensional examples, which provide mathematically simplest but clear enough physical insights. Kim then moves on to explaining waves on a flat surface of discontinuity, demonstrating how propagation characteristics of waves change in space when there is a distributed impedance mismatch. Next is a chapter on radiation, scattering, and diffraction, where Kim shows how these topics can be explained in a unified way, by seeing the changes of waves due to spatially distributed impedance. Lastly, Kim covers sound in closed space, which is considered to be a space that is surrounded by spatially distributed impedance, and introduces two spaces: acoustically large and small space. The bulk of the book is concerned with introducing core fundamental concepts, but the appendices are included as the essentials as well to cover other important topics to extend learning. Offers a less mathematically-intensive means to understand the subject matter Provides an excellent launching point for more advanced study or for review of the basics Based on classroom tested materials developed over the course of two decades Companion site for readers, containing animations and MATLAB code downloads Videos and impedance data available from the author's website Presentation slides available for instructor use Sound Propagation is geared towards graduate students and advanced undergraduates in acoustics, audio engineering, and noise control engineering. Practicing engineers and researchers in audio engineering and noise control, or students in engineering and physics disciplines, who want to gain an understanding of sound and vibration concepts, will also find the book to be a helpful resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Courant and Friedrich's classical treatise was first published in 1948 and tThe basic research for it took place during World War II. However, many aspects make the book just as interesting as a text and a reference today. It treats the dynamics of compressible fluids in mathematical form, and attempts to present a systematic theory of nonlinear wave propagation, particularly in relation to gas dynamics. Written in the form of an advanced textbook, it should appeal to engineers, physicists and mathematicians alike.

Book Frequency Domain Analysis and Design of Nonlinear Systems based on Volterra Series Expansion

Download or read book Frequency Domain Analysis and Design of Nonlinear Systems based on Volterra Series Expansion written by Xingjian Jing and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic summary of some new advances in the area of nonlinear analysis and design in the frequency domain, focusing on the application oriented theory and methods based on the GFRF concept, which is mainly done by the author in the past 8 years. The main results are formulated uniformly with a parametric characteristic approach, which provides a convenient and novel insight into nonlinear influence on system output response in terms of characteristic parameters and thus facilitate nonlinear analysis and design in the frequency domain. The book starts with a brief introduction to the background of nonlinear analysis in the frequency domain, followed by recursive algorithms for computation of GFRFs for different parametric models, and nonlinear output frequency properties. Thereafter the parametric characteristic analysis method is introduced, which leads to the new understanding and formulation of the GFRFs, and nonlinear characteristic output spectrum (nCOS) and the nCOS based analysis and design method. Based on the parametric characteristic approach, nonlinear influence in the frequency domain can be investigated with a novel insight, i.e., alternating series, which is followed by some application results in vibration control. Magnitude bounds of frequency response functions of nonlinear systems can also be studied with a parametric characteristic approach, which result in novel parametric convergence criteria for any given parametric nonlinear model whose input-output relationship allows a convergent Volterra series expansion. This book targets those readers who are working in the areas related to nonlinear analysis and design, nonlinear signal processing, nonlinear system identification, nonlinear vibration control, and so on. It particularly serves as a good reference for those who are studying frequency domain methods for nonlinear systems.
