Book excerpt: What if some secrets were never meant to stay buried? When a parish priest is brutally murdered in cold blood, a rural community is left in shock – and fear. New to the Vale of the White Horse, Detective Sergeant Mark Turpin discovers the murder bears the hallmark of a vicious killer who shows no remorse for his victim, and leaves no trace behind. After a second priest is killed, his broken body bearing similar ritualistic abuse, the police are confronted by a horrifying truth – there is a serial killer at large with a disturbing vendetta. Book Strictly English

Download or read book Strictly English written by Simon Heffer and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Be in no doubt: the beer was drunk but the man drank the beer." "We must avoid vulgarities like 'front up'. If someone is 'fronting up' a television show, then he is presenting it." Simon Heffer's incisive and amusingly despairing emails to colleagues at the The Daily Telegraph about grammatical mistakes and stylistic slips have attracted a growing band of ardent fans over recent years. Now, in his new book Strictly English, he makes an impassioned case for an end to the sloppiness that has become such a hallmark of everyday speech and writing, and shows how accuracy and clarity are within the grasp of anyone who is prepared to take the time to master a few simple rules. If you wince when you see "different than" in print, or are offended by people who think that "infer" and "imply" mean the same thing, then this book will provide reassurance that you are not alone. And if you believe that precise and elegant English really does matter, then it will prove required reading.

Book Robert Frost and New England

Download or read book Robert Frost and New England written by John C. Kemp and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though critics traditionally have paid homage to Robert Frost's New England identity by labeling him a regionalist, John Kemp is the first to investigate what was in fact a highly complex relationship between poet and region. Through a frankly revisionist interpretation, he not only demonstrates how Frost's relationship to New England and his attempt to portray himself as the "Yankee farmer poet" affected his poetry; he also shows that the regional identity became a problem both for Frost and for his readers. Book Impermanent Footprints

  • Author : Jill Marcy
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation

Download or read book Impermanent Footprints written by Jill Marcy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I leave my time on this earth I know that my footprints on it are silent, invisible and impermanent upon its surface. My existence is only recorded by those I’ve known in my life in their memories of me. These too are impermanent and will in time fade and become no more. This is the cycle of life. I write this book as a personal record of my viewpoints, interpretations of what I have viewed and experienced whilst on my earth walk. My motivation to write it is like many before me and many more after I am gone. To leave a vision in print for others to reference to or use as a signpost towards a path upon which they might like to journey themselves. I write this book of reference mainly for my sons, for when I am gone they will in time forget my voice of guidance and this book will be a way of keeping my teachings and guidance available for them to tap into if they need once I am no longer here physically. I began to write this book in the year 2007. I am now reaching my mid 40’s and am beginning to start my reflective years of living. My generation has been given the name of the X generation, which is interesting due to the content of my book falling into the X factor. However if you ask my sons they would have you believe that I’m well into being OLD. In history men and women were respected in their elder years as the tribes and cultures of those times valued their wisdom, which they contributed to the younger members of the tribe. Storytelling was a valued tradition as it was in that time the only way to hand down knowledge so it could continue on through the younger generations. In our modern society this tradition is considered barbaric and youth is valued now and society continues to endorse how to stay YOUNG!

Book excerpt: One hundred and fifty years of advancing technology has done much to promote the success of the human race...or has it? This fast-paced technological thriller may have some clues. Fast forward a century and a half to the platinum age of medicine and an Earth pursuing a large-scale colonization effort on Mars. While the pacemaker may have been one of the first devices implanted in a person, it surely will not be the last. The ever-shrinking integrated circuit will most certainly find its way into our systems. Stem-cell research, in its infancy now, will likely progress into a beneficial method of the prevention and treatment of disease. Like their predecessors, Cancer, AIDS, Ebola and the like will surely be wiped out. Detox is a taught thriller, with mystery, suspense, loads of action, and a dash of romance. Mans inhumanity to man takes center stage in a quest for truth, justice, and retribution. And with the worlds largest corporations, Dual-Planet and Molentel, and the deadly Plasma Virus intertwined in a massive colonization effort on the Red Planet, maybe the bottom line needs to be taken into account.

Time and again, the daring pair have braved countless dangers to emerge victorious. But now Flinx attempts something that may be impossible for the heretofore undefeated hero. His mission: to take a vacation. Never have the cares of the universe lain so heavily on Flinx’s shoulders, nor the forces arrayed against him seemed so invincible. Pursued by a newly revealed sect of doomsday fanatics, hunted by factions inside and outside the Commonwealth for transgressions real and imagined, expected to single-handedly avert a looming galactic crisis (or bear responsibility for the consequences), Flinx can be forgiven for feeling a slight touch of melancholy. There’s only one solution for what ails Flinx, according to his ship’s AI. But taking time off is tricky business. With an increasing number of enemies chasing him with ever-greater enthusiasm, Flinx must find a getaway shrouded in obscurity. Jast, a planet smack in the middle of nowhere, is the perfect locale. Yet even in a place where hardly anyone’s ever seen a human, Flinx and trouble can’t stay separated for long. Unfortunately, Flinx hasn’t a clue that his vacation paradise is in reality a danger zone of the highest magnitude. And by the time he learns the truth, it may be too late.

Book Making Peace with the Universe

Download or read book Making Peace with the Universe written by Michael Scott Alexander and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s great religious and philosophical traditions often include poignant testimonies of spiritual turmoil and healing. Following episodes of harrowing personal crisis, including addictions, periods of anxiety and panic, and reminders of mortality, these accounts then also describe pathways to consolation and resolution. In Making Peace with the Universe, Michael Scott Alexander reads diverse classic religious accounts as masterpieces of therapeutic insight. In the company of William James, Socrates, Muslim legal scholar turned mystic Hamid al-Ghazali, Chinggis Khan as described by the Daoist monk Qui Chuji, and jazz musician and Catholic convert Mary Lou Williams, Alexander traces the steps from existential crisis to psychological health. He recasts spiritual confessions as case histories of therapy, showing how they remain radical and deeply meaningful even in an age of scientific psychology. They record the therapeutic affect of spiritual experience, testifying to the achievement of psychological well-being through the cultivation of an edifying spiritual mood. Mixing scholarly learning with episodes from his own skeptical quest, Alexander demonstrates how these accounts of private terror and personal triumph offer a model of therapy through spiritual adventure. An interdisciplinary consideration of the shared terrain of religion and psychology, Making Peace with the Universe offers an innovative view of what spiritual traditions can teach us about finding meaning in the modern world.
