Book Army of None Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War

This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 William E. Colby Award "The book I had been waiting for. I can't recommend it highly enough." —Bill Gates The era of autonomous weapons has arrived. Today around the globe, at least thirty nations have weapons that can search for and destroy enemy targets all on their own. Paul Scharre, a leading expert in next-generation warfare, describes these and other high tech weapons systems—from Israel’s Harpy drone to the American submarine-hunting robot ship Sea Hunter—and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. “A smart primer to what’s to come in warfare” (Bruce Schneier), Army of None engages military history, global policy, and cutting-edge science to explore the implications of giving weapons the freedom to make life and death decisions. A former soldier himself, Scharre argues that we must embrace technology where it can make war more precise and humane, but when the choice is life or death, there is no replacement for the human heart.

Download or read book The Hueys in None The Number written by Oliver Jeffers and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to count with the #1 New York Times bestselling artist of The Day the Crayons Quit and his hilarious cast of Hueys! "Is none a number?" you might ask. I'm glad you did. The answer is Yes! For example, how many lumps of cheese do you see next to you? The answer, depending on where you are, is likely "none." Counting with the reader all the way up to ten, the Hueys explain numbers as only they can. Such as: The number 4 is the number of tantrums thrown by Dave every day. 7 is the number of oranges balanced on things. And 9 is the number of seagulls who attacked Frank's French fries. Together they make quite a spectacle. But when you take away all of these fun illustrations in the book? You're left with none! This funny and accessible counting book from #1 New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers (The Day the Crayons Quit; This Moose Belongs to Me) gives the Hueys one more reason to be every young child's best friends. Praise for NONE THE NUMBER "Delightfully droll and enlightening . . . . The illustrations, 'made with pencils and a bit of color' on large white pages, are deceptively simple and ridiculously funny."--School Library Journal

Book excerpt: "Then There Were None, by award-winning Honolulu writer and artist Martha H. Noyes, is a personal and emotional account, in words and pictures, of the effect of Western contact on the Hawaiian population. Drawing from a variety of sources, Noyes chronicles the effects, from the arrival of Capt. Cook to the present, of disease, written language, the missionaries, landownership, the overthrow of the monarchy, and the suppression of hula and Hawaiian language, concluding with a look at present-day activism. Photographs vividly contrast tourist images with scenes from the real Hawaii and highlight the contrast between a culture rooted in cosmology and the material culture of those who made Hawaii their own." -- Amazon.com viewed August 4, 2020.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of redefining religion’s role in our lives is not an academic exercise. It is an urgent modern imperative. This book confronts all religious dogma. It challenges the idea and practice of the need for a middle man between man and God. It invites the reader to consider the modern rise of the “Nones”--the religiously unaffiliated--and to join this magnificent silent social tsunami. It explores with vivid and compelling narrative the story of the Nones showing the who, when, where and how of this revolt against religious corruption and its preoccupation with power, money and politics. Born in the East, Lebanon, living in the West, Canada, Elie M. Nasrallah, offers the reader emotion-ridden stories as he draws from personal experience of the “Lebanese War,” to highlight the role of organized religion in the Middle East and around the world. The content and style are both provocative and captivating making the theme timely and timeless. Are you fed up with orthodoxy and willing to free yourself from the shackles of conformity, outdated practices and stale tales of the tribe? If so, then this book is for you.

  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press

Download or read book None of the Above written by Mollie J. Cohen and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world each year, millions of citizens turn out to vote but leave their ballots empty or spoil them. Increasingly, campaigns have emerged that promote “invalid” votes like these. Why do citizens choose to cast blank and spoiled votes? And how do campaigns mobilizing the invalid vote influence this decision? None of the Above answers these questions using evidence from presidential and gubernatorial elections in eighteen Latin American democracies. Author Mollie J. Cohen draws on a broad range of methods and sources, incorporating data from electoral management bodies, nationally representative surveys, survey experiments, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and news sources. Contrary to received wisdom, this book shows that most citizens cast blank or spoiled votes in presidential elections on purpose. By participating in invalid vote campaigns, citizens can voice their concerns about low-quality candidates while also expressing a preference for high-quality democracy. Campaigns promoting blank and spoiled votes come about more often, and succeed at higher rates, when incumbent politicians undermine the quality of elections. Surprisingly, invalid vote campaigns can shore up the quality of democracy in the short term. None of the Above shows that swings in blank and spoiled vote rates can serve as a warning about the trajectory of a country’s democracy.
