Book Nondestructive Testing of Solid propellant Rocket Motors

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Solid propellant Rocket Motors written by R. L. Pasley and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods are given for nondestructively inspecting rocket motor cases, nozzles, and motor-case insulation. The motor cases may be fabricated from steel, titanium, or glass-reinforced plastics and made by welding or wrapping processes. In some designs, the nozzle consists of tungsten inserts fitted in graphite heat-sink backup rings with a molybdenum sleeve shrunk over the graphite ring. The inside insulation is generally a rubber-base substance adhered to the motor case. (Author).

Book An Acoustical Imaging System for the Inspection of Solid Rocket Motors

Download or read book An Acoustical Imaging System for the Inspection of Solid Rocket Motors written by L. J. Busse and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development and operation of an acoustical imaging, nondestructive test system for the inspection of small rocket motors. This report is intended to document the accomplishments of the program, the theoretical background, and the operational characteristics of the inspection system. The major objective of this program was to develop an acoustical imaging, nondestructive testing system for small rocket motors (i.e., 13-20 cm diameter). This inspection system was to be capable of detecting two types of defects within these rocket motors: (1) internal defects of inner-bore cracks; and (2) separations or debond between the various layers making up the wall of the rocket motor. The system was shown to be capable of detecting all of the flaw types it was originally designed to detect: (1) case/liner debonds; (2) liner/propellant debonds; and (3) inner-bore cracks. Case/liner debonds are reliably detected using the chirp frequency debond test, and the other two flaws are evident using the low frequency transmission test.

Book Planning a Nondestructive Testing Program for Solid Propellant Rocket Motors

Download or read book Planning a Nondestructive Testing Program for Solid Propellant Rocket Motors written by W. W. Mills and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nondestructive testing is mandatory to assure the quality, reliability, and motor performance required by the solid propellant rocket motor industry. The motor performance desired demands minimum inert component weight and, therefore, precludes the luxury of wide material and design safety margins. Established techniques have been used where applicable, and new and advanced techniques have been evolved or modified for use. Extensive consideration and effort are being expended to develop automation and instrumentation for the readout and evaluation process so as to minimize subjective and qualitative interpretation of the test by providing objective and quantitative interpretation. Standards for evaluation of the test method used and th eitem produced are necessarily being upgraded. This correlation is found through direct measurement of specific properties, through experience based on past performance, or from destructive tests.

Book The Selection and Demonstration of Advanced Nondestructive Testing Techniques for On Site Missile Inspection Volume II Appendices

Download or read book The Selection and Demonstration of Advanced Nondestructive Testing Techniques for On Site Missile Inspection Volume II Appendices written by H. P. Briar and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes a program planned around the problem of on-site non-destructive testing (NDT) of solid rocket motors. It was designed to select, evaluate, and demonstrate NDT capabilities, beginning with comprehensive surveys of industry and the world's literature (from 1960 to mid-1972). Only two techniques showed promise: Ultrasonic holography and gamma radiography. In the ensuing developments ASPC evaluated two ultrasonic systems. The first, modified ultrasonic holography, was developed from known principals of holography and ultrasound transmission through materials. The theoretical resolution of this system ranges between 0.4 in. and 1 in. at a depth of 18 in. into the propellant. The second system, acoustic profilography, uses the principal of diffraction to measure the shortest path across a secant of the motor. (Modified author abstract).

Download or read book The Selection and Demonstration of Advanced Nondestructive Testing Techniques for On Site Missile Inspection Volume I Technical Report written by H. P. Briar and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program was planned around the problem of on-site non-destructive testing (NDT) of solid rocket motors. It was designed to select, evaluate, and demonstrate NDT capabilities, beginning with comprehensive surveys of industry and the world's literature (from 1960 to mid-1972). Many materials and NDT devices were identified; most of these being ruled out by the constraints of in-silo testing. Only two techniques showed promise: Ultrasonic holography and gamma radiography. Book Nondestructive Testing of Scout Rocket Motors

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Scout Rocket Motors written by Arthur E. Oaks and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nondestructive tests applied to Scout rocket motors were reviewed and appraised. Analytical techniques were developed to evaluate the capabilities of the radiographic and ultrasonic procedures used. Major problem areas found were the inadequacy of high voltage radiography for detecting unbonds and propellant cracks having narrow widths, the inability to relate the ultrasonic signals received from flat-bottomed holes in standards to those received from real defects and in the general area of the specification of acceptance criteria and how these were to be met. To counter the deficiencies noted, analyses were conducted to the potential utility of radiometric, acoustic, holographic and thermographic techniques for motor and nozzle bond inspection, a new approach to qualifying magnetic particle inspection and the application of acoustic emission analysis to the evaluation of proof and leak test data.
