Book Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood 50 Years of Research

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood 50 Years of Research written by Robert Jon Ross and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium Series was initiated by Washington State University and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in 1963 with the convening of a symposium on the topic of nondestructive testing of wood at FPL. Including that meeting, 17 symposia have been held during the last 50 years at various sites around the world that focus on nondestructive testing and evaluation of wood. The technical content of these symposia have been captured and published in hardcopy proceedings. The proceedings from this series of symposia are rather large; they contain over 6,000 pages of technical information related to the topic of nondestructive testing and evaluation of wood and wood products. Recently, many have expressed a need to have access to these proceedings in an electronic format. This General Technical Report was prepared to address that need. It includes a brief history of this symposium series, summaries of each symposium, and readily searchable electronic copies of the proceedings from each symposium.

Book Nondestructive Evaluation of Wood

Download or read book Nondestructive Evaluation of Wood written by Forest Service (U S ) and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2015 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature's engineering of wood through genetics, wind, and weather creates a wide variability in wood as a material. Consequently, manufacture and users of wood products are frequently frustrated in dealing with the forest resource. Manufacturers sometimes argue that wood is difficult to consistently process into quality products because of the wide range of properties that exist in this raw material. Users of wood products can be equally frustrated with the performance variability found in finished products. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies have contributed significantly toward eliminating the cause of these frustrations. NDE technologies have been developed and are currently used in lumber and veneer grading programs that result in engineered materials that have consistent well-defined performance characteristics. This brief volume explores some of the processes that are used to manufacture wood, including green wood technology and provides a bit of history to wood production and its uses too. The different aspects and steps of wood processing are presented in detail from both a fundamental technological perspective and their realisation in industrial contexts. The discussed industrial processes extend beyond sawmilling and the manufacturing of adhesively bonded wood products to the processing of the various wood-based materials, including pulp and paper, natural fibre materials and aspects of bio-refinery. Core concepts of wood applications, quality and life cycle assessment of this important natural resource are presented. The book concludes with a useful compilation of fundamental material parameters and data as well as a glossary of terms in accordance with the most important industry standards. Written and edited by a truly international team of experts from academia, research institutes and industry, thoroughly reviewed by external colleagues, this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands, as well as providing a summary of state-of-the-art research trends and industrial requirements. It is an invaluable resource for all professionals in research and development, and engineers in practise in the field of wood science and technology.

Book Foundation of Nondestructive Testing of Wood Products

Download or read book Foundation of Nondestructive Testing of Wood Products written by Friend K. Bechtel and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nondestructive evaluation procedures are now widely used in the forest products industry. These procedures rely upon nondestructive tests to evaluate important physical and mechanical properties of wood-based materials and began with fundamental research during and after World War II. An important outcome was the evolution of machinery and process for grading lumber and veneer. A dedicated group of scientists and engineers conducted and adapted this research for industrial use and developed equipment to make accurate measurements of wood properties in a production setting. One of those engineers, Dr. Friend K. Bechtel, spent over 40 years developing modern testing equipment for use by the forest products industry. Among his significant contributions to the nondestructive testing field is his fundamental analytical work. Most of his design work began with a thorough evaluation of a test method, starting with underlying physical and mechanical principles. As an industrial research engineer, he focused on designing quality equipment that would provide accurate information to manufacturers and users of wood products. This publication describes some of his work in context with that of others, some previously reviewed and published and some not. It begins with a history of the industrial development of the machine stress rating lumber grading process. It then summarizes analytical work that delves into the effects that nonhomogeneities frequently found in wood products have on their mechanical properties.

Book excerpt: Updated, revised, and restructured to reflect the latest advances in science and applications, the fourth edition of this best-selling industry and research reference covers the fundamental physical acoustics of ultrasonics and transducers, with a focus on piezoelectric and magnetostrictive modalities. It then discusses the full breadth of ultrasonics applications involving low power (sensing) and high power (processing) for research, industrial, and medical use. This book includes new content covering computer modeling used for acoustic and elastic wave phenomena, including scattering, mode conversion, transmission through layered media, Rayleigh and Lamb waves and flexural plates, modern horn design tools, Langevin transducers, and material characterization. There is more attention on process monitoring and advanced nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE), including phased array ultrasound (PAUT), long-range inspection, using guided ultrasonic waves (GUW), internally rotary inspection systems (IRIS), time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD), and acoustic emission (AE). These methods are discussed and applied to both metals and nonmetals using illustrations in various industries, including now additionally for food and beverage products. The topics of defect sizing, capabilities, and limitations, including the probability of detection (POD), are introduced. Three chapters provide a new treatment of high-power ultrasonics, for both fluids and solids, and again, with examples of industrial engineering, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and other process applications. Expanded coverage is given to medical and biological applications, covering diagnostics, therapy, and, at the highest powers, surgery. Key Features Provides an overview of fundamental analysis and transducer technologies needed to design and develop both measurement and processing systems Considers applications in material characterization and metrology Covers ultrasonic nondestructive testing and evaluation and high-power ultrasonics, which involves interactions that change the state of material Highlights medical and biomedical applications of ultrasound, focusing on the physical acoustics and the technology employed for diagnosis, therapy, surgery, and research This book is intended for both the undergraduate and graduate scientists and engineers, as well as the working professional, who seeks to understand the fundamentals together with a holistic treatment of the field of ultrasonics and its diversity of applications.

Book Nondestructive Characterization and Imaging of Wood

Download or read book Nondestructive Characterization and Imaging of Wood written by Voichita Bucur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on the Nondestructive Characterization and Imaging of Wood by Professor Voichita Bucur is truly the most outstanding reference on the subject ever written. Since the origins of mankind, wood has played a key role in the history of humans and other living creatures, ranging from provision of life from trees giving air, heat, light, and food to nourish their bodies to structures to protect them from the elements. Wood has also played a key role in one of the world's primary religions. Nondestructive diagnostics methods have long found application in medi cal practice for examination of the human body in order to detect life threatening abnormalities and permit diagnosis to extend life. Nondestructive testing has been used for many years to insure the safety of machinery, air craft, railroads, tunnels, buildings and many other structures. Therefore, it is timely for a treatise, like the present one, to be written describing how wood can be characterized without employing destructive test methods. Since wood is so valuable to mankind, it is important to know the latest methods to nondestructively characterize wood for all practical applications.
