Book Nondestructive Assessment of Wood Members from a Historic Viewing Tower

Download or read book Nondestructive Assessment of Wood Members from a Historic Viewing Tower written by Robert Jon Ross and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is responsible for operating one of the largest state park systems in the United States. Peninsula State Park, one of the state's most visited parks, attracts more than one million visitors a year. This park contained one of the most iconic structures in the Wisconsin State Park system, a tall, wooden observation tower that was constructed in 1932. Because of concerns about the structural integrity of several of the large timbers in the tower, it was closed in the spring of 2015 and dismantled in fall 2016 at the request of the Department of Natural Resources. The USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, was contacted and asked to conduct an assessment of the timbers after the structure was dismantled. This report summarizes results obtained from our inspection and assessment of the timbers. A brief summary of the nondestructive testing techniques used, observations, and data from tests conducted on the timbers are included.

Book excerpt: The State of Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is responsible for operating one of the largest state park systems in the United States. Potawatomi State Park, located on the Door County peninsula, consists of about 1,200 acres of flat to gently rolling upland terrain bordered by steep slopes and rugged limestone cliffs along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. A 75-ft observation tower sits atop a 150-ft bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, was asked to conduct an assessment of the main support timbers of the tower. This report summarizes the results obtained from the inspection and assessment. It includes a brief summary of the nondestructive testing techniques that were used, observations, data from tests conducted on the timbers, and recommendations.

Book Nondestructive testing for assessing wood members in structures a review

Download or read book Nondestructive testing for assessing wood members in structures a review written by R. J. Ross and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous organizations have conducted research to develop nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques for assessing the condition of wood members in structures. A review of this research was published in 1991. This is an update of the 1991 report. It presents a comprehensive review of published research on the development and use of NDT tools for in-place assessment of wood members. It examines the fundamental hypothesis behind NDT of wood, reviews several widely used NDT techniques, and summarizes results of projects that focused on laboratory verification of the fundamental hypothesis. Results obtained from projects that used NDT techniques for in-place evaluation of wood members are presented. In addition, recommendations are given for future in-place assessment NDT research.

Book Condition Assessment of Main Structural Members of Stream Schooner WAPAMA

Download or read book Condition Assessment of Main Structural Members of Stream Schooner WAPAMA written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic American ship WAPAMA is the last surviving example of the wooden steam-powered schooners designed for the 19th- and 20th-century Pacific Coast lumber trade and coastal service. Since its launching in 1915, the WAPAMA has had a long and productive life in plying cargo and passengers along the stormy West Coast from Mexico to Alaska. As the sole survivor of the once numerous class, the WAPAMA was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1984. The wood structure of the WAPAMA has significantly deteriorated over the years and currently resides on a barge with internal and external structural supports. Portions of the vessel are unsafe for public access. Assisting in an effort to stabilize and rehabilitate this historic vessel, we conducted a field investigation on the current physical condition of the wooden structural members in January 2006. A variety of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods were employed to locate problem areas and define the severity of deterioration on key structural members such as keelsons, keel, ceiling planking, hull frames, clamps, and main deck beams. This report presents the main findings from this field investigation and demonstrates the use of state-of-the-art NDT technologies in evaluating physical and biological conditions of historic wood structures.

Book Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions Anamnesis Diagnosis Therapy Controls

Download or read book Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions Anamnesis Diagnosis Therapy Controls written by Koen Van Balen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 2968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions. Anamnesis, diagnosis, therapy, controls contains the papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC2016, Leuven, Belgium, 13-15 September 2016). The main theme of the book is “Anamnesis, Diagnosis, Therapy, Controls”, which emphasizes the importance of all steps of a restoration process in order to obtain a thorough understanding of the structural behaviour of built cultural heritage. The contributions cover every aspect of the structural analysis of historical constructions, such as material characterization, structural modelling, static and dynamic monitoring, non-destructive techniques for on-site investigation, seismic behaviour, rehabilitation, traditional and innovative repair techniques, and case studies. A special focus has been put on six specific themes: - Innovation and heritage - Preventive conservation - Computational strategies for heritage structures - Sustainable strengthening of masonry with composites - Values and sustainability, and - Subsoil interaction The knowledge, insights and ideas in Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions. Anamnesis, diagnosis, therapy, controls make this book of abstracts and the corresponding, digital full-colour conference proceedings containing the full papers must-have literature for researchers and practitioners involved in the structural analysis of historical constructions.
