Book Noncontact Nondestructive Determination of Pavement Deflection Under Moving Loads

Download or read book Noncontact Nondestructive Determination of Pavement Deflection Under Moving Loads written by Milton E. Harr and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a procedure for nondestructively evaluating and predicting the deflection response of various flexible pavements to loads imposed by different aircraft. Transfer function theory is used to form the basis of a pavement evaluation and response scheme. Two mobile systems were developed for the measurement of pavement deflections; the Light Emitting Diode (LED) system and the Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) system. The report concludes that the rapid nondestructive measurement of pavement deflections due to moving prototype loads is feasible and that a total nondestructive evaluation scheme based entirely on the use of prototype loads and measured deflections can be fabricated to evaluate and predict instantaneous response and cumulative effects of loads of various magnitudes and configurations. Subcommittee D-4 on Road and Paving Materials and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1994 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Comparative Study of Nondestructive Pavement Testing MacDill Air Force Base Florida

Download or read book Comparative Study of Nondestructive Pavement Testing MacDill Air Force Base Florida written by Jim W. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is the most comprehensive single undertaking to date which is directed toward an evaluation of the validity of concepts of nondestructive evaluation of the load-carrying capacity of airfield pavements. Seven nondestructive test devices tested five sections of airfield pavements at MacDill Air Force Base (AFB) which consisted of two rigid, two flexible, and one composite pavements, ranging from 20-in. portland cement concrete (PCC) to 5.5- in. asphaltic concrete. Analytical treatments of the test data included empirical correlation analyses, and layered-elastic and finite element computer analyses. Six private firms each with a different nondestructive testing (NDT) evaluation method provided evaluation results in terms of allowable aircraft loads and overlay thicknesses. The Air Force produced one set of results using its new nondestructive pavement testing method, and Waterways Experiment Station provided three sets of results. This study has shown that NDT technology exists for evaluation of airfield pavements. For the pavements at MacDill AFB, some NDT evaluation methods agreed better with the standard test-pit method than others. However, the pavements at MacDill AFB are rather nontypical, and those NDT evaluation methods that did not give good results at MacDIll may give more agreeable results on different pavements. The lack of agreement between results of the NDT evaluation methods does justify concern and may point to the need for a standard evaluation method.

Book Nondestructive Testing of Flexible Pavements

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Flexible Pavements written by Jim W. Hall and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of literature concerned with the nondestructive testing of flexible pavements, and two types of testing methods are presented in this report. The first method deals with the measurement of pavement response through the deflection of the pavement surface. Effect of the loading characteristics, pavement structure, and environment on measured deflections are discussed. Experience has shown that deflections of certain magnitudes are associated with failure. Bending strain has also been associated with failure through field measurements of radius of curvature of the deflection basin and through laboratory fatigue studies. The second method involves the application of a vibratory load to the pavement surface and determination of pavement response through deflection of the surface under a low-frequency vibration or by measurement of wave propagation at higher frequencies. The deflection of the pavement under the vibratory loading is used to determine dynamic stiffness, or type of spring constant, for the pavement structure. The wave velocity is used to arrive at a shear modulus and compression modulus of each pavement layer and the subgrade as well as thickness of each layer. Theoretical calculations involved and typical results are presented. Conclusions are made from findings in the literature, and recommendations are given for developing a method of nondestructive evaluation of flexible pavements. (Author).

Book Nondestructive Testing of Pavements Tests on Multiple Wheel Heavy Gear Load Sections and Eglin and Hurlburt Airfields

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Pavements Tests on Multiple Wheel Heavy Gear Load Sections and Eglin and Hurlburt Airfields written by J. W Hall (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents results of a study to develop techniques using vibratory testing equipment for nondestructive airfield pavement evaluation. Testing was primarily concentrated on the multiple-wheel heavy gear load (MWHGL) flexible and rigid pavement test sections, but some additional tests were performed on prototype pavements at Eglin AFB, Florida, and Hurlburt Airfield, Florida. High-frequency steady-state vibration tests were used to measure shear wave velocity and dynamic moduli of elasticity were computed for each pavement layer. Low-frequency steady-state vibration tests were used to measure dynamic force and deflection on the pavement sections. (Author).
