Book Instability and Non uniqueness for the 2D Euler Equations after M Vishik

Download or read book Instability and Non uniqueness for the 2D Euler Equations after M Vishik written by Camillo De Lellis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential companion to M. Vishik’s groundbreaking work in fluid mechanics The incompressible Euler equations are a system of partial differential equations introduced by Leonhard Euler more than 250 years ago to describe the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid. These equations can be derived from the classical conservations laws of mass and momentum under some very idealized assumptions. While they look simple compared to many other equations of mathematical physics, several fundamental mathematical questions about them are still unanswered. One is under which assumptions it can be rigorously proved that they determine the evolution of the fluid once we know its initial state and the forces acting on it. This book addresses a well-known case of this question in two space dimensions. Following the pioneering ideas of M. Vishik, the authors explain in detail the optimality of a celebrated theorem of V. Yudovich from the 1960s, which states that, in the vorticity formulation, the solution is unique if the initial vorticity and the acting force are bounded. In particular, the authors show that Yudovich’s theorem cannot be generalized to the L^p setting.

This book was released on 2013-03-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Partial Differential Equations is devoted to modern topics in the theory of partial differential equations. It consists of both original articles and survey papers covering a wide scope of research topics in partial differential equations and their applications. The contributors were participants of the 8th ISAAC congress in Moscow in 2011 or are members of the PDE interest group of the ISAAC society. This volume is addressed to graduate students at various levels as well as researchers in partial differential equations and related fields. The readers will find this an excellent resource of both introductory and advanced material. The key topics are: • Linear hyperbolic equations and systems (scattering, symmetrisers) • Non-linear wave models (global existence, decay estimates, blow-up) • Evolution equations (control theory, well-posedness, smoothing) • Elliptic equations (uniqueness, non-uniqueness, positive solutions) • Special models from applications (Kirchhoff equation, Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, thermoelasticity)

Download or read book The Cauchy Problem written by Hector O. Fattorini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the Cauchy or initial value problem for linear differential equations. It treats in detail some of the applications of linear space methods to partial differential equations, especially the equations of mathematical physics such as the Maxwell, Schrödinger and Dirac equations. Background material presented in the first chapter makes the book accessible to mathematicians and physicists who are not specialists in this area as well as to graduate students.

Book Evolution Inclusions and Variation Inequalities for Earth Data Processing III

Download or read book Evolution Inclusions and Variation Inequalities for Earth Data Processing III written by Mikhail Z. Zgurovsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to two earlier volumes, the authors now focus on the long-time behavior of evolution inclusions, based on the theory of extremal solutions to differential-operator problems. This approach is used to solve problems in climate research, geophysics, aerohydrodynamics, chemical kinetics or fluid dynamics. As in the previous volumes, the authors present a toolbox of mathematical equations. The book is based on seminars and lecture courses on multi-valued and non-linear analysis and their geophysical application.

Hörmander's treatise on linear partial differential equations. They constitute the most complete and up-to-date account of this subject, by the author who has dominated it and made the most significant contributions in the last decades.....It is a superb book, which must be present in every mathematical library, and an indispensable tool for all - young and old - interested in the theory of partial differential operators." L. Boutet de Monvel in Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, 1987 "This treatise is outstanding in every respect and must be counted among the great books in mathematics. It is certainly no easy reading (...) but a careful study is extremely rewarding for its wealth of ideas and techniques and the beauty of presentation." J. Brüning in Zentralblatt MATH, 1987 Honours awarded to Lars Hörmander: Fields Medal 1962, Speaker at International Congress 1970, Wolf Prize 1988, AMS Steele Prize 2006
