Book Non semisimple Extended Topological Quantum Field Theories

Download or read book Non semisimple Extended Topological Quantum Field Theories written by Marco De Renzi and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We develop the general theory for the construction of Extended Topological Quantum Field Theories (ETQFTs) associated with the Costantino-Geer-Patureau quantum invariants of closed 3-manifolds. In order to do so, we introduce relative modular categories, a class of ribbon categories which are modeled on representations of unrolled quantum groups, and which can be thought of as a non-semisimple analogue to modular categories. Our approach exploits a 2-categorical version of the universal construction introduced by Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum, and Vogel. The 1+1+1-EQFTs thus obtained are realized by symmetric monoidal 2-functors which are defined over non-rigid 2-categories of admissible cobordisms decorated with colored ribbon graphs and cohomology classes, and which take values in 2- categories of complete graded linear categories. In particular, our construction extends the family of graded 2+1-TQFTs defined for the unrolled version of quantum sl2 by Blanchet, Costantino, Geer, and Patureau to a new family of graded ETQFTs. The non-semisimplicity of the theory is witnessed by the presence of non-semisimple graded linear categories associated with critical 1-manifolds"--

Book Non Semisimple Topological Quantum Field Theories for 3 Manifolds with Corners

Download or read book Non Semisimple Topological Quantum Field Theories for 3 Manifolds with Corners written by Thomas Kerler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the (to date) most general approach to combinatorial constructions of topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) in three dimensions. The authors describe extended TQFTs as double functors between two naturally defined double categories: one of topological nature, made of 3-manifolds with corners, the other of algebraic nature, made of linear categories, functors, vector spaces and maps. Atiyah's conventional notion of TQFTs as well as the notion of modular functor from axiomatic conformal field theory are unified in this concept. A large class of such extended modular catergory is constructed, assigning a double functor to every abelian modular category, which does not have to be semisimple.

Book Homotopy Quantum Field Theory

Download or read book Homotopy Quantum Field Theory written by Vladimir G. Turaev and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2010 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homotopy Quantum Field Theory (HQFT) is a branch of Topological Quantum Field Theory founded by E. Witten and M. Atiyah. It applies ideas from theoretical physics to study principal bundles over manifolds and, more generally, homotopy classes of maps from manifolds to a fixed target space. This book is the first systematic exposition of Homotopy Quantum Field Theory. It starts with a formal definition of an HQFT and provides examples of HQFTs in all dimensions. The main body of the text is focused on $2$-dimensional and $3$-dimensional HQFTs. A study of these HQFTs leads to new algebraic objects: crossed Frobenius group-algebras, crossed ribbon group-categories, and Hopf group-coalgebras. These notions and their connections with HQFTs are discussed in detail. The text ends with several appendices including an outline of recent developments and a list of open problems. Three appendices by M. Muger and A. Virelizier summarize their work in this area. The book is addressed to mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and graduate students interested in topological aspects of quantum field theory. The exposition is self-contained and well suited for a one-semester graduate course. Prerequisites include only basics of algebra and topology.

Book Lectures on Field Theory and Topology

Download or read book Lectures on Field Theory and Topology written by Daniel S. Freed and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures recount an application of stable homotopy theory to a concrete problem in low energy physics: the classification of special phases of matter. While the joint work of the author and Michael Hopkins is a focal point, a general geometric frame of reference on quantum field theory is emphasized. Early lectures describe the geometric axiom systems introduced by Graeme Segal and Michael Atiyah in the late 1980s, as well as subsequent extensions. This material provides an entry point for mathematicians to delve into quantum field theory. Classification theorems in low dimensions are proved to illustrate the framework. The later lectures turn to more specialized topics in field theory, including the relationship between invertible field theories and stable homotopy theory, extended unitarity, anomalies, and relativistic free fermion systems. The accompanying mathematical explanations touch upon (higher) category theory, duals to the sphere spectrum, equivariant spectra, differential cohomology, and Dirac operators. The outcome of computations made using the Adams spectral sequence is presented and compared to results in the condensed matter literature obtained by very different means. The general perspectives and specific applications fuse into a compelling story at the interface of contemporary mathematics and theoretical physics.

Book Categories and Representation Theory

Download or read book Categories and Representation Theory written by Hideto Asashiba and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a self-contained account of applications of category theory to the theory of representations of algebras. Its main focus is on 2-categorical techniques, including 2-categorical covering theory. The book has few prerequisites beyond linear algebra and elementary ring theory, but familiarity with the basics of representations of quivers and of category theory will be helpful. In addition to providing an introduction to category theory, the book develops useful tools such as quivers, adjoints, string diagrams, and tensor products over a small category; gives an exposition of new advances such as a 2-categorical generalization of Cohen-Montgomery duality in pseudo-actions of a group; and develops the moderation level of categories, first proposed by Levy, to avoid the set theoretic paradox in category theory. The book is accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students who would like to study the representation theory of algebras, and it contains many exercises. It can be used as the textbook for an introductory course on the category theoretic approach with an emphasis on 2-categories, and as a reference for researchers in algebra interested in derived equivalences and covering theory.

Book Finite Fields with Applications to Combinatorics

Download or read book Finite Fields with Applications to Combinatorics written by Kannan Soundararajan and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses finite field theory as a hook to introduce the reader to a range of ideas from algebra and number theory. It constructs all finite fields from scratch and shows that they are unique up to isomorphism. As a payoff, several combinatorial applications of finite fields are given: Sidon sets and perfect difference sets, de Bruijn sequences and a magic trick of Persi Diaconis, and the polynomial time algorithm for primality testing due to Agrawal, Kayal and Saxena. The book forms the basis for a one term intensive course with students meeting weekly for multiple lectures and a discussion session. Readers can expect to develop familiarity with ideas in algebra (groups, rings and fields), and elementary number theory, which would help with later classes where these are developed in greater detail. And they will enjoy seeing the AKS primality test application tying together the many disparate topics from the book. The pre-requisites for reading this book are minimal: familiarity with proof writing, some linear algebra, and one variable calculus is assumed. This book is aimed at incoming undergraduate students with a strong interest in mathematics or computer science.

Book Twenty Four Hours of Local Cohomology

Download or read book Twenty Four Hours of Local Cohomology written by Srikanth B. Iyengar and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed to provide an introduction to local cohomology which takes cognizance of the breadth of its interactions with other areas of mathematics. It covers topics such as the number of defining equations of algebraic sets, connectedness properties of algebraic sets, connections to sheaf cohomology and to de Rham cohomology, Gröbner bases in the commutative setting as well as for $D$-modules, the Frobenius morphism and characteristic $p$ methods, finiteness properties of local cohomology modules, semigroup rings and polyhedral geometry, and hypergeometric systems arising from semigroups. The book begins with basic notions in geometry, sheaf theory, and homological algebra leading to the definition and basic properties of local cohomology. Then it develops the theory in a number of different directions, and draws connections with topology, geometry, combinatorics, and algorithmic aspects of the subject.
