Book excerpt: Intrinsic motives and non-monetary incentives are important drivers of worker satisfaction, particularly in the modern knowledge economy. Recent empirical work has established, for example, that various forms of non-monetary incentives can make workers more satisfied, more likely to stay at the firm, and more productive (e.g., Cassar and Meier, 2018). However, little theoretical work is done to understand the role of general non-monetary incentives in organizations. Hence, this thesis intends to fill that gap by developing a sequence of four models based on Bakers multi-task framework (2002) to capture the effects of non-monetary incentives on employee behavior and wage design. I argue that non-monetary incentives can complement traditional monetary compensation to motivate effort. Such incentives can serve as a more efficient alternative to wages and solve many incentive problems caused by the limitations of a purely financial incentive contract, including adverse selection problems, moral hazard problems, and coordination failures.

Rewards are important factors that explain certain job aspects that contribute significantly to the organization such as job satisfaction. The major objective of the study is examining the importance of non monetary incentives in an organization. The study is directed towards examining different dimensions of Non Monetary Incentives. Comparative study of monetary and non monetary incentives has been done which bring us to the conclusion that in order to bring “good work motivation” and not only “money motivation” different types non monetary incentives must be introduces in an organization. Non-monetary recognition can be very motivating, helping to build feelings of confidence and satisfaction.

Some of these studies have focused on monetary incentives or tangible reward and their effective contribution to employee motivation while others have tackled non-monetary incentives and their possible impact on employees. Aside from participation on decision making, continuous training or well-defined career development - that were among the important incentives without direct cash payments-this paper aims at studying non-monetary incentives from a social prospective; i.e. the social variables affecting motivational levels of medical salespeople - who are main driving force behind the success of any small or medium sized medical company in Egypt - and their impact on performance, job-satisfaction and organizational commitment. The paper identifies these social variables as the respectable treatment by the management, expressing recognition and appreciation to salespeople's efforts - regardless target-achievement, offering them job-security and job-related social status in addition to favorable social environment that would allow salespeople develop positive social relations with peers, supervisors and top-management. The significant role of leadership and culture in mediating the relation between each of these social variables and salespeople motivational level is also discussed.Analysis of social variables - in light of past theories, studies and researchers cited in literature work, researcher's practical experience and within the limitation of this study - have confirmed the important role of non-monetary social incentives in sustaining the highest motivational levels, good performance and job-satisfaction for medical salespeople despite any financial constraints that may hinder offering them adequate monetary incentives.

Think of any internal regulations which intent to avoid behavior patterns by providing rules and/or punishments. Furthermore, as an example, a low performance might result in a curtailed income and loss of personal reputation.

Incentive is any means that makes an employee desire to do better, try harder and expend more energy. Non-monetary incentives such as participation in decision making, verbal or written recognition of good work etc. are the kinds of incentives that do not involve direct payment of cash. To realize the objectives of the thesis, a survey study was administered at the General Directorate of Investment and Enterprises, under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. According to the results of the study, most of the employees think that the level of utilization of the non-monetary incentives in their organization is inadequate. Also, the findings suggest that they value non-monetary incentives as much as monetary incentives. Thus, within the limitations of the survey study, it may be concluded that non-monetary incentives have the potential to increase the motivation of personnel in this public organization.
