Book Microemulsions as stepping stones to greener organic chemistry

Download or read book Microemulsions as stepping stones to greener organic chemistry written by Nadja Wulff and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-01-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In organic chemistry the simultaneous solubility of hydrophobic and hydrophilic reactants in a common solvent is an ubiquitous problem. Often either an expensive or a toxic solvent is needed. Alternatively, polar and non polar components are mixed into macroemulsions permitting them to react across the internal interface. However, macroemulsions display a comparatively small interfacial area. Thus, the reaction rate is low. Microemulsions feature an inherent vast interfacial area which facilitates significantly higher reaction rates. Furthermore, they allow a rather simple monitoring of the reaction kinetics by observing changes in the phase behavior. In this work the advantages of microemulsions as efficient reaction media for the photochemically induced Paternò Büchi reaction of pyruvic acid and 1 octene are elucidated. The amphiphilic reaction product 3 hexyl 2 methyloxetane 2 carboxylic acid influences the phase behavior of the microemulsion system significantly. With increasing UV exposure time the point of highest efficiency was shifted to lower temperatures and, interestingly, an increase of efficiency was detected. Hence, the newly created amphiphile acts as an efficient, hydrophobic cosurfactant. Additionally, with small angle neutron scattering and freeze fracture electron microscopy it was shown that the bicontinuous microstructure survives the UV irradiation. Another route towards green organic chemistry was opened by characterization of two new sustainable biosurfactants (mannosylerythritollipids (MEL) and cellobioselipids (CL)) in microemulsions.

Book The Curvature Model for Mixed Surfactant Microemulsion Systems

Download or read book The Curvature Model for Mixed Surfactant Microemulsion Systems written by Arti Suresh Bhakta and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this work were to develop a simple procedure to determine the hydrophilic/lipophilic nature of surfactants based on microemulsion phase behavior and to characterize mixed surfactant systems. The concept of hydrophilic-lipophilic difference (HLD) and the net-average curvature (NAC) were used to develop a model to characterize systems containing anionic-anionic and anionic-nonionic surfactant mixtures. Salinity and temperature scans were carried out and phase changes were noted. It was found that in anionic-anionic systems the linear mixing rule is applicable, and was used to calculate the intrinsic curvature parameter (Ci), which can be used as an alternative scale to the HLB and packing factor to characterize the behavior of a surfactant in microemulsion systems. For anionic-nonionic systems the linear mixing rule does not apply because of the interactions between anionic and nonionic surfactants which seem to be dominated by the charge shielding effect that nonionic surfactants have on anionic surfactants.

Book excerpt: The rapidly increasing number of applications for microemulsions has kept this relatively old topic still at the top point of research themes. This book provides an assessment of some issues influencing the characteristics and performance of the microemulsions, as well as their main types of applications. In chapter 1 a short introduction about the background, various aspects and applications of microemulsions is given. In Part 2 some experimental and modeling investigations on microstructure and phase behavior of these systems have been discussed. The last two parts of book is devoted to discussion on different types of microemulsion's applications, namely, use in drug delivery, vaccines, oil industry, preparation of nanostructured polymeric, metallic and metal oxides materials for different applications.
