Book Non governmental Organizations in Malawi

Download or read book Non governmental Organizations in Malawi written by M. Glagow and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Africa has been widely discussed. Malawi like other African countries underwent a transition towards pluralism and democratization. The NGOs play a vital part in this process, especially since state bureaucracies and market mechanisms do not provide the expected development. But are NGOs really able to make up for the shortcomings of official institutions, considering the problems that still lie ahead? Taking their historical, political, economic and social environment into consideration, the study draws a picture of NGOs in Africa with all their possibilities and limitations.

Book A Village and Its NGOs

Download or read book A Village and Its NGOs written by Thomas McNamara and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores NGO presence through detailing relationships, personhoods and meaning making in a collection of Northern Malawian fishing villages. Its key claim is that NGOs’ projects and resources have less impact on villagers’ lives than the symbols they emit and the ways they encourage re-imaging development and renegotiating intra-community obligations and entitlements.

Book Non Governmental Development Organizations and the Poverty Reduction Agenda

Download or read book Non Governmental Development Organizations and the Poverty Reduction Agenda written by Jonathan J. Makuwira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Non-Governmental Development Organisations (NGDOs) have, over the past two decades, entered centre stage in their active participation in the social, political and economic issues affecting both the developing and developed world. This book offers a highly stimulating and concise summary of the NGDO sector by examining their history and metamorphosis; their influence on the social, political and economic landscapes of the ‘Northern’ and ‘Southern’ governments and societies. The author analyses competing theoretical and conceptual debates not only regarding their contribution to the global social political dynamism but also on the sector’s changing external influence as they try and mitigate poverty in marginalized communities. This book presents NGDOs as multidimensional actors propelled by the desire to make a lasting change but constrained by market-oriented approaches to development and other factors both internal and external to their environment. While a lot of attention has been given to understanding international NGDOs like World Vision International, Oxfam, Care International and Plan International, this book offers a critical analysis of grassroots organizations – those NGDOs founded and established by locals and operate at the deepest end of the development contexts. This work will be of interest to students and scholars in a range of areas including Development Studies, International Organizations and Globalization.

Book Reforming the Malawian Public Sector

Download or read book Reforming the Malawian Public Sector written by Richard I. C. Tambulasi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reforming the Malawian Public Sector argues that the new public management model that Malawi, like most African countries, adopted under the influence of donor organisations has not led to the intended development. The book examines decentralisation, performance contracting, and public-private partnerships as key aspects of the reforms and comes to the conclusion that at best, it can be argued that the failures have been due to poor implementation and this could be attributed to the fact that the process was led by donors who lacked the necessary institutional infrastructure. The book uses the 2005/6 fertiliser subsidy programme, which the government embarked on despite donor resistance that it went against market models, but which turned out to be overwhelmingly successful to demonstrate the stateís developmental ability and potential. This volume is essential reading for academics, students, and practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of public administration, management, policy, development and governance in Africa and the rest of the developing world. The book is dedicated to the memory Guy Mhone, a Malawian, who was among Africaís leading scholars in public administration and governance. His works focused mainly on public sector reforms and development.

Book The Challenges of Nongovernmental Organisations in Anglophone Cameroon

Download or read book The Challenges of Nongovernmental Organisations in Anglophone Cameroon written by Lotsmart N. Fonjong and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely recognised that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have undertaken an increasingly important role in both human development and environmental conservation efforts in the less-developed nations during the past three decades. Much of the literature on NGOs focuses on, or is sponsored by, large Western-based international NGOs which themselves undertake or direct many of the development and conservation efforts. This book cuts through sensitive subjects including government corruption and manipulation, the misuse of NGOs and the limitations of small, under funded local development organisations to identify the crucial role of local NGOs in the challenging context of rural development in Sub-Saharan African. His observations and insights are highly useful and provide important contextual understanding for future human development and environment conservation projects in rural African settings.

Book Prisoners of Freedom

Download or read book Prisoners of Freedom written by Harri Englund and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vivid ethnography, Harri Englund investigates how ideas of freedom impede struggles against poverty and injustice in emerging democracies. Reaching beyond a narrow focus on the national elite, Prisoners of Freedom shows how foreign aid and human rights activism hamper the pursuit of democratic citizenship in Africa. The book explores how activists’ aspirations of self-improvement, pursued under harsh economic conditions, find in the human rights discourse a new means to distinguish oneself from the poor masses. Among expatriates, the emphasis on abstract human rights avoids confrontations with the political and business elites. Drawing on long-term research among the Malawian poor, Englund brings to life the personal circumstances of Malawian human rights activists, their expatriate benefactors, and the urban and rural poor as he develops a fresh perspective on freedom—one that recognizes the significance of debt, obligation, and civil virtues.
