Book Ultrasonic Monitoring of Laboratory Scale Hydraulic Fracturing

Download or read book Ultrasonic Monitoring of Laboratory Scale Hydraulic Fracturing written by Timothy Witham and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic fracturing is a proven method to enhance the recovery of hydrocarbons from tight reservoirs and source-rock plays (Mighani et al., 2018). Larger, more complex fractures have greater surface area, which is thought to help maximize recovery. However, measuring the degree of complexity and interconnectedness of fractures is still a challenging problem, even with microseismic data. Here, we use laboratory-scale hydraulic fracturing experiments in conjunction with active and passive ultrasonic monitoring to evaluate how stress wave responses can be used to better constrain fracture development. An array of piezoelectric sensors transmits compressional stress waves through isotropic acrylic samples during hydrofracture. This allows for imaging of the fractures behavior over time. Fracking fluids are delivered to the sample at a constant stress rate in all cases. Initial results show that detection of changes in fracture aperture is possible by analyzing the relative attenuation differences in active compressional wave amplitudes throughout an entire experiment. The wave attenuation increases along the ray paths passing through fracture planes while the attenuation through intact regions remains unchanged. Experiments sought to determine whether there is an observable difference in attenuation values and fracture response. Variable compositions of fracturing fluid could influence the complexity of the resultant fracture surface. Acoustic emissions were recorded passively during the fracturing process for some experiments. These laboratory methods could be upscaled using borehole seismic testing.

Book Acoustic Emission Testing

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing written by Christian U. Grosse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have been studied in civil engineering for a long time. The techniques are recently going to be more and more applied to practical applications and to be standardized in the codes. This is because the increase of aging structures and disastrous damages due to recent earthquakes urgently demand for maintenance and retrofit of civil structures in service for example. It results in the need for the development of advanced and effective inspection techniques. Thus, AE techniques draw a great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. The book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes.

Book Acoustic Emissions in Hydraulic Fracturing of Barre Granite

Download or read book Acoustic Emissions in Hydraulic Fracturing of Barre Granite written by Qiuyi Bing Li and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to observe acoustic emissions (AE) generated by laboratory scale hydraulic fracturing of Barre granite specimens with single or double flaw geometry. The scope of this work covers the experimental setup and subsequent analyses of these acoustic emissions, which in essence are elastic waves generated by displacements occurring within the rock specimen. Acoustic emissions can be analysed in a number of ways, whether individually or grouped together into events when a number of emissions arrive together. Individual emissions can be analysed for their amplitude, energy, or their frequency content while the source location and source mechanism can be inferred from events. The AE data are analysed in conjunction with water pressure, high resolution images, and high speed video taken during the experiment. Section 3 of this work outlines the selection and subsequent modification of the AE acquisition system with a specific focus on capturing AE at the end of each experiment in order to compare results to high speed video. This section describes the initial equipment selection, as well as initial experiments where it was noted that crucial data were missing around the time of the fracture event. This issue was largely resolved by modifying the system parameters as well as upgrading the PC supporting the AE acquisition cards. Section 4 of this work describes analysis of one experiment, providing an in-depth start-to-finish account of the nature of acoustic emissions at different phases of the experiment. This section also considers all of the hydraulic fracture experiments performed at different vertical loads and specimen flaw geometries, and draws some tentative conclusions regarding hydraulic fracturing in granite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is the first to consider the effect of non-uniform fluid pressure in hydraulic fractures. The book covers the key topics in the process of hydraulic fracture nucleation, growth, interaction and fracture network formation. Laboratory experiments and theoretical modeling are combined to elucidate the formation mechanism of complex fracture networks. This book is suitable for master’s/Ph.D. students, scientists and engineers majoring in rock mechanics and petroleum engineering who need to use a more reliable model to predict fracture behavior.

Book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. Book Monitoring Acoustic Emission from Propagating Fractures in Petroleum Reservoir Rocks

Download or read book Monitoring Acoustic Emission from Propagating Fractures in Petroleum Reservoir Rocks written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results presented here are from a continuing petroleum reservoir stimulation research program at the Morgantown Energy Research Center (MERC) of the U.S. Government Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). The research pertains to hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas reservoir rocks with specific emphasis placed upon the acoustic mapping of induced fracture orientations, lengths and rates of propagation, and the mechanisms governing fracture propagation in oil and gas reservoirs. Information presented here is based upon a field experiment for acoustically mapping hydraulic fractures, and laboratory studies on acoustic emission from fracture initiation and growth in reservoir rocks. The field experiment was conducted in a petroleum reservoir in Bradford, Pa. Twelve hydrophone type sensors were placed at the oil bearing rock elevation of 2,030 feet from the surface in adjacent wells surrounding the fractured well. Complete directional acoustic velocity distribution and acoustic background noise levels were evaluated. The resulting measurements made during the hydraulic fracture mapping experiment, data analysis techniques and problems are discussed. Instrumentation developed and used in the data reduction and analysis is described. Laboratory hydraulic fracture stimulation experiments conducted in reservoir rocks are discussed with a description of techniques, instrumentation, and data analysis included.
