Book Hydrodynamic Propulsion and Its Optimization

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Propulsion and Its Optimization written by J.A. Sparenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HYDRODYNAMIC PROPULSION AND ITS OPTIMIZATION ANALYTIC THEORY Hydrodynamic propulsion has been of major interest ever since craft took to the water. In the course of time, many attempts have been made to invent, develop, or to improve hydrodynamic propulsion devices. Remarkable achievements in this field were made essentially by experienced individuals, who were in need of reliable propulsion units such as paddle wheels, sculling devices, screw propellers, and of course, sails. The problem of minimizing the amount of input energy for a prescribed effective output was first investigated seriously at the beginning of this century. In 1919, BETZ presented a paper on air-screw propellers with minimum consumption of energy which could be applied to ship-screw propellers also. Next, attempts were made to optimize hydrodynamic propulsion units. Ensuing investigations concerned the optimization of the hydrodynamic system: ship-propeller. The first simple theory of ship propulsion which was presented considered more or less only thrust augmentation, wake processing and modification of propeller characteristics when operating behind the ships hull. This theory has been little improved meanwhile and is still useful, particularly with regard to practical ship design and for evaluating results of ship model tests. However, this theory is not adequate for optimization procedures necessary for high-technology propulsion, particularly for ship propellers utilizing propulsion improving devices such as tip end plates or tip fins at the propeller blades, spoilers in front of the propeller, asymmetrical stern etc.

This new edition introduces new engine models that will be most commonly installed in ships over the next decade, as well as the latest legislation and pollutant emissions procedures. Since publication of the last edition in 2009, a number of emission control areas (ECAs) have been established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in which exhaust emissions are subject to even more stringent controls. In addition, there are now rules that affect new ships and their emission of CO2 measured as a product of cargo carried. - Provides the latest emission control technologies, such as SCR and water scrubbers - Contains complete updates of legislation and pollutant emission procedures - Includes the latest emission control technologies and expands upon remote monitoring and control of engines

Book A SURVEY OF CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL SUB MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS

Download or read book A SURVEY OF CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL SUB MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey is made of a variety of conventional and unconventional submarine propulsion systems. Included are three all-mechanical systems, two inboard turboelectric systems, and six in board/outboard turboelectric systems incorporating free-flooding propulsion motors. Some of these systems also provide ship control features in addition to the requisite normal propulsion. A current FBM ship, SSB(N)616, is used as a reference design throughout, and only the propulsion system is varied. The propulsion system as considered starts at the main steam line and ends with generation of thrust. It includes one or more steam turbine prime movers, mechanical or electric power transmissions, and propulsors. The eleven systems are described and compared, and four are indicated as offering potential improvements over the current propulsion system.

Book Climate Change and International Shipping

Download or read book Climate Change and International Shipping written by Yubing Shi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Climate Change and International Shipping: The Regulatory Framework for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Yubing Shi provides ground-breaking analyses of the evolving regulatory framework for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. This book examines the applicability of international environmental law principles to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships and assesses the responses of the key stakeholders to the challenge of regulation. Based on these in-depth analyses, Shi identifies key gaps in the current regulatory framework for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, and proposes options for legal and institutional reforms to improve the system in place.

Book Model ships with jet propulsion

Download or read book Model ships with jet propulsion written by Gerhard O. W. Fischer and published by Verlag für Technik und Handwerk. This book was released on with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RC ship models with jet propulsion or water jet propulsion, as you can also say, have been around for many years, but unfortunately only a few model ship builders have familiarised themselves with this type of propulsion. Once you have read this book and seen the many illustrations of jet models, you will also be one of the jet-enthusiastic RC model ship builders. The author explains the technology and you will find that building a jet-powered RC model ship is no more difficult than building a model with conventional propulsion. Numerous pictures illustrate the construction and conversion of models, so that every beginner will be able to venture into building a jet-powered RC ship model. From the content: • How a jet propulsion system works • First model ship kits with jet propulsion • A company specialises in jet propulsion • Building instructions for RC ship models with jet propulsion • Jet models from Kehrer material sets • Model Ruban Bleu with one jet engine • Model Antipodean with two jet engines • Model SAR 33 with three jet drives • Other models with Kehrer jet drives • Model Motor Yacht Thor • Model HMCC Sentinel • Model Florida-Jet • Model Rapido 600-Jet • Experimental model Wave Explorer-Jet • Racing catamaran Powerkat-Jet • Pictures of some more Kehrer-Jet models • Multi Jet-Boat from Graupner

Book An Alternative Propulsion Plant for Naval Auxiliary Ships

Download or read book An Alternative Propulsion Plant for Naval Auxiliary Ships written by Edward Lawrence Stone and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the rising fuel cost, marine engineers and ship operators alike are searching for more fuel efficient propulsion plants to power ocean-going vessels. This thesis describes an alternative propulsion plant for the U.S. Navy's newest fleet oiler, the AO-177, in order to solve the problem of rising fuel costs. An analysis of converting the present geared steam turbine propulsion plant is performed, and the economic benefits of such a conversion are examined. The results of this analysis show that it is feasible to convert the AO-177 class fleet oiler to a diesel powered vessel provided that the conversion is performed prior to the end of the ship's third year of life. Two candidate diesel plants were studied with the most economical plant being selected for use in the conversion. (Author).
