With potentially four billion people being connected by mobile devices by the end of 2009, and many people having their first internet experience over a mobile device rather than a PC, mobility is changing people’s lives for the better. Book A Strategic Analysis of Nokia Diversifying Into the Provision of Community Phone Services

Download or read book A Strategic Analysis of Nokia Diversifying Into the Provision of Community Phone Services written by Agatha Gikunda and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nokia predicts that by 2008, 80% of mobile phone sales will come from New-Growth Markets. New-Growth Markets consist of high-income consumers capable of purchasing expensive handsets, and low-income consumers that have thus far been unable to afford cellular phones. This paper investigates the feasibility of Nokia creating Community Phone Services. A prospective business model involves rollout of services by Franchisees, following guidelines from the firm. This paper finds that the business potential in this market is massive, but challenging due to the different socio-economic classes in the region. This paper concludes that by focusing on a dual-strategy, where Nokia continues to create products for the high-income consumer while diversifying into the Community Phone Arena, it will be able to reap benefits from consumers who fall on both sides of the economic spectrum. Following this strategy will allow Nokia to defend its position as the world leader in the industry.

Book Risk Management for Nokia

Download or read book Risk Management for Nokia written by Rieke Hinrichs and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1 (First) = 82 %, New College Durham, language: English, abstract: Tremendous events like 9/11, the huge property/ banking/ debt/ euro crises, failing projects like Heathrow Terminal 5 or the instable political situation in many countries of the Middle East – just a few examples of events that have made people and organisations more aware of risks and uncertainty. Therefore, risk management has been gaining more and more in importance since the 1970s and is included in most organisations’ policy nowadays. (Merna & Al-Thani, 2008, p.40 [Online]) However, even if the connotation of the word “risk” in our everyday language is quite negative, risks do not just mean threats (also called “downside risks”) but they can also provide opportunities (“upside risks”). (Woods, 2011, p.22) Consequently, “avoiding a risk may mean avoiding a potentially huge opportunity” (Frame, 2003, [Online]), which makes risk management a complex matter that is essential to be considered thoroughly by every organisation that is interested in longterm profitability.

Book excerpt: Kingdom of Nokia tells a fascinating story of corporatism in Finland. How did the mobile phone giant Nokia make the Finnish elite willing to serve the interests of the company? Nokia became a global player in mobile communications in the 1990s, and helped establish Anglo-Saxon capitalism in Finland. Through its success and strong lobbying, the company managed to capture the attention of Finnish politicians, civil servants, and journalists nationwide. With concrete detailed examples, Kingdom of Nokia illustrates how Nokia organised lavishing trips to journalists and paid direct campaign funding to politicians to establish its role at the core of Finnish decision-making. As a result, the company influenced important political decisions such as joining the European Union and adopting the euro, and further, Nokia even drafted its own law to serve its special interests. All this in a country considered one of the least corrupt in the world.
