Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwanted noise can be a significant nuisance in buildings, particularly dwellings. Part E of the Building Regulations for England and Wales has therefore introduced substantially improved standards for noise control and stringent new requirements for the testing of completed buildings. This new book explains the regulations in detail and provides recommendations for good design and construction. It explains those aspects of sound transmission necessary for an understanding of Part E of the Regulations.

Book Noise

  • Author : Daniel Kahneman
  • Publisher : Little, Brown
  • Release : 2021-05-18
  • ISBN : 031645138X
  • Pages : 429 pages

Download or read book Noise written by Daniel Kahneman and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Nobel Prize-winning author of Thinking, Fast and Slow and the coauthor of Nudge, a revolutionary exploration of why people make bad judgments and how to make better ones—"a tour de force” (New York Times). Imagine that two doctors in the same city give different diagnoses to identical patients—or that two judges in the same courthouse give markedly different sentences to people who have committed the same crime. Suppose that different interviewers at the same firm make different decisions about indistinguishable job applicants—or that when a company is handling customer complaints, the resolution depends on who happens to answer the phone. Now imagine that the same doctor, the same judge, the same interviewer, or the same customer service agent makes different decisions depending on whether it is morning or afternoon, or Monday rather than Wednesday. These are examples of noise: variability in judgments that should be identical. In Noise, Daniel Kahneman, Olivier Sibony, and Cass R. Sunstein show the detrimental effects of noise in many fields, including medicine, law, economic forecasting, forensic science, bail, child protection, strategy, performance reviews, and personnel selection. Wherever there is judgment, there is noise. Yet, most of the time, individuals and organizations alike are unaware of it. They neglect noise. With a few simple remedies, people can reduce both noise and bias, and so make far better decisions. Packed with original ideas, and offering the same kinds of research-based insights that made Thinking, Fast and Slow and Nudge groundbreaking New York Times bestsellers, Noise explains how and why humans are so susceptible to noise in judgment—and what we can do about it.

Book Noise Control Manual for Residential Buildings

Download or read book Noise Control Manual for Residential Buildings written by David A. Harris and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 1997-07-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher's Note: Products purchased from Third Party sellers are not guaranteed by the publisher for quality, authenticity, or access to any online entitlements included with the product. More people are spending more time at home making more noise--yet they want quiet environments. This is the only book available that tells designers, planners, architects, and builders how to give homeowners and apartment-dwellers the quiet they crave. Simple enough to be used by the average do-it-yourselfer (it avoids complex mathematics), yet so complete it will satisfy the requirements of knowledgeable building professionals, this authoritative guide gives you one-stop answers on designing, specifying, testing, and retrofitting residences to meet the new environmental standards and satisfy our need for peace and quiet.

Book Noise Control in Buildings

Download or read book Noise Control in Buildings written by R. Mcmullan and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1991-09-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unwanted sound from neighbours, traffic and other sources is a big cause of discontent. A significant number of people require advice and are willing to spend money on solutions; designers, builders and renovators of houses, flats and offices often need to provide solutions to noise problems. However information about sound insulation and noise control is not generally available, except in specialist, highly technical publications. This guide will give practical, readable information to fill that gap

Book Architectural Acoustics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher N. Brooks
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2002-12-02
  • ISBN : 0786413980
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Architectural Acoustics written by Christopher N. Brooks and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2002-12-02 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics as a branch of physics involves heavy mathematics, and the practice of architectural acoustics involves knowledge of a broad range of subjects. For these reasons, many people believe that good acoustics are almost impossible to obtain and exist only in concert halls. With a solid understanding of the basics, however, rooms with good acoustics are not as hard to design and build as people might think. This work describes acoustics and the factors to be considered in constructing a room or building with good sound quality. Among the topics covered are intonation, tuning and temperaments of classical music, environmental noise, noise and vibration control, sound measurement, sound systems, acoustic models, and acoustical design for various settings and purposes, including acoustics for chamber music, synagogues, churches, and classrooms. The work looks at places like Clemens Theatre, Congress Hall, Binns Rehearsal Room, and Philharmonic Hall, to name just a few, as models of small and large buildings with excellent acoustics. Many diagrams and other illustrations enhance the text.

Book Night Noise Guidelines for Europe

Download or read book Night Noise Guidelines for Europe written by Charlotte Hurtley and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Regional Office for Europe set up a working group of experts to provide scientific advice to the Member States for the development of future legislation and policy action in the area of assessment and control of night noise exposure. The working group reviewed available scientific evidence on the health effects of night noise, and derived health-based guideline values. In December 2006, the working group and stakeholders from industry, government and nongovernmental organizations reviewed and reached general agreement on the guideline values and key texts for the final document of the "Night noise guidelines for Europe". Considering the scientific evidence on the thresholds of night noise exposure indicated by "Lnight, outside" [L suffix night, outside] as defined in the Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC), an Lnight, outside of 40 dB should be the target of the night noise guideline (NNG) to protect the public, including the most vulnerable groups such as children, the chronically ill and the elderly. "Lnight, outside" value of 55 dB is recommended as an interim target for the countries where the NNG cannot be achieved in the short term for various reasons, and where policy-makers choose to adopt a stepwise approach. These guidelines are applicable to the Member States of the European Region, and may be considered as an extension to, as well as an update of, the previous WHO "Guidelines for community noise" (1999). Book Basics Sound Insulation

Download or read book Basics Sound Insulation written by Dominic Kampshoff and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound protection may even play an important role at the design stage of a project, because the orientation of a building and its plan layout may influence it. Important factors to be taken into account are noise impacting on the building from the outside and noise generated by people and technical equipment inside the building. Basics Sound Insulation conveys to the reader a thorough understanding of sound protection requirements in the design and construction of a building. To start with, the basics of acoustics are explained, including basic terms of physics, how sound is generated and propagated, and how sound is perceived. This is followed by an explanation of how sound emissions are assessed and what sound-reducing and design options are available to the designer.
