Book The Technopriests

Download or read book The Technopriests written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and published by Humanoids, Incorporated. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Greek tragedy of "The Metabarons," Alexandro Jodorowsky comes back to his biblical roots with this quest reminiscent of Moses and set on a galactic scale. To top it off, the characters and the theme of virtual reality are tailor-made for artist Zoran Janjetov ("Before The Incal"), who finds in Jodorowsky his perfect match. Albino, hero of this space odyssey, remembers here his childhood, his apprenticeship, and the big and small battles he had to fight to fulfill his ambitions in a universe where technological advances are paradoxically matched only by the cruelty and the barbarism of the forces controlling it.

Book The Angola Prison Seminary

Download or read book The Angola Prison Seminary written by Michael Hallett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrections officials faced with rising populations and shrinking budgets have increasingly welcomed "faith-based" providers offering services at no cost to help meet the needs of inmates. Drawing from three years of on-site research, this book utilizes survey analysis along with life-history interviews of inmates and staff to explore the history, purpose, and functioning of the Inmate Minister program at Louisiana State Penitentiary (aka "Angola"), America’s largest maximum-security prison. This book takes seriously attributions from inmates that faith is helpful for "surviving prison" and explores the implications of religious programming for an American corrections system in crisis, featuring high recidivism, dehumanizing violence, and often draconian punishments. A first-of-its-kind prototype in a quickly expanding policy arena, Angola’s unique Inmate Minister program deploys trained graduates of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in bi-vocational pastoral service roles throughout the prison. Inmates lead their own congregations and serve in lay-ministry capacities in hospice, cell block visitation, delivery of familial death notifications to fellow inmates, "sidewalk counseling" and tier ministry, officiating inmate funerals, and delivering "care packages" to indigent prisoners. Life-history interviews uncover deep-level change in self-identity corresponding with a growing body of research on identity change and religiously motivated desistance. The concluding chapter addresses concerns regarding the First Amendment, the dysfunctional state of U.S. corrections, and directions for future research.

Book Decades Behind Bars

Download or read book Decades Behind Bars written by Gaye D. Holman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two million people are incarcerated in America's prisons--one in nine is serving a life sentence. Mass long-term imprisonment devours state budgets, adversely affects community well-being and skews our collective moral compass. This study examines the human costs of keeping the convicted out of sight, out of mind. Beginning in 1994, the author began recording the personal stories of 50 incarcerated felons--17 of them were still in prison 20 years later. The men candidly discuss what it means to commit a serious crime and to be confined for perhaps the remainder of their lives. Their stories are balanced by conversations with correctional officers, prison administrators, chaplains and parole board members. The author identifies circumstances that ruin some prisoners and save others and presents insights for possible improvements in the criminal justice system.

Book Essays of a Penitentiary Philosopher

Download or read book Essays of a Penitentiary Philosopher written by Phillip Torsrud and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to know why our nation's leaders have failed to solve America's crime problem, these essays expose a number of areas where either not enough thought is being given, or the thinking is just wrong. While crime dominates America's media and political scene, there is very little intelligent insight on the topic coming from those who would know most about it, criminals. These essays change that. The essays begin by addressing crime as part of a larger social fabric that cannot be fixed by the simple passing of a few more laws. After focusing on the big picture, the essays become more specific, examining different ways to make a more efficient and effective legal system. In part two, these essays expand to address a number of other social issues like the war in Iraq, labor issues, health care and the environment. The reader is forced to continuously re-examine their beliefs. Torsrud strips down problems to their core, creating arguments that are insightful, hard to challenge, and at times even humorous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European comic authors produced a steady stream of comic material throughout the twentieth century, but gained the world's notice in 1975 when the French magazine Metal Hurlant was founded. A new generation of artists and writers had begun. Soon publishers were producing translations of the new comics into other languages, including English, and comics creators everywhere were inspired to innovation. This is a reference work, arranged by artist or writer, to European comics from the last quarter of the twentieth century that have been translated from any European language into English. It contains a variety of material, from the innocent imperialism of Herge's Tintin to the sadistic murder for hire in Bernet's Torpedo. Albums by a single creator or artist-and-writer team of European origin are the focus; comics in periodicals and anthologies with multiple contributors are excluded. Each entry provides a plot abstract and various notes about the original comic. An author index provides brief biographical information. There is a comprehensive general index.
