Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noctes Orientales: Being a Selection of Essays Read Before the Straits Philosophical Society Between the Years 1893 and 1910 The members of the Society were limited to fifteen in number, all of whom took it in turns to read an essay upon any subject selected by themselves in Literature, Science, or Art. This was followed by a criticism by another member, and a discussion on the essay and criticism succeeded, at the end of which the President summed up the discussion, and the essayist replied to any questions which had been the outcome of the criticism and discussion. It was always the custom for these meetings to be held on the second Friday or Saturday of each month, the members meeting and dining together before the paper was read. The essays and criticisms were afterwards typewritten, and copies of the volumes of essays were presented to the public libraries of Singapore and Penang, a copy also being kept as the property of the Society. The whole series consists of 17 volumes, containing 355 essays and criticisms. While the actual subjects selected by the writers was left to their choice, in the President's opening address he suggested certain limits in style and subject, which were accepted by the Society and adhered to. His suggestions Were as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A focus on the sites of Asian interaction enables this volume to shed new light on the growing field of diaspora studies. Research on Asia's many diasporas has enriched the older literature on migration to illuminate the links of kinship, affect, trade, and information that connect locations across Asia, and beyond. But where many recent works on particular diasporas have tended to look inwards - at how distinctive diasporic cultures maintained a sense of 'home' while abroad - the volume's focus has been on how different diasporas have come into contact with each other in particular places, often for the first time. It also engages with research in the fields of urban studies and urban history. The articles develop the already rich historical literature on port cities across Asia – the quintessential sites of Asian cosmopolitanism – as well as more recent work on the 'moving metropolises' and 'mobile cities' of contemporary Asia.

Book Explaining the Genetic Footprints of Catholic and Protestant Colonizers

Download or read book Explaining the Genetic Footprints of Catholic and Protestant Colonizers written by S. Barter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book points out a novel pattern in colonial intimacy - that Catholic colonizers tended to leave behind significant mixed communities while Protestant colonizers were more likely to police relations with local women. The varied genetic footprints of Catholic and Protestant colonizers, while subject to some exceptions, holds across world regions and over time. Having demonstrated that this pattern exists, this book then seeks to explain it, looking to religious institutions, political capacity, and ideas of nation and race.
