Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, foreign invasion, communism and tribal conflict: these have been the realities of life in Northern Albania for centuries. In this rich and comprehensive history, Tom Winnifrith examines the many different elements that have shaped this independent and little-known region of the Balkans. He explores the fundamental division between the South of Albania and its mysterious, romantic North - more feudal, more tribal, more Catholic and more prone to Austrian and Italian influence. It is also a region less affected by Greece, both ancient and modern, and by medieval Byzantium or the Orthodox faith. Northern Albania, with a terrain and climate much harsher than the south of the country, has traditionally had little respect for law and authority while its inhabitants remain in thrall to an ancient honour code -- the kanun -- demanding blood feuds and terrible revenge. Nobody's Kingdom traces the history of this ruggedly beautiful region, frequently disturbed by both invaders and internal strife yet retaining a distinct national identity and character. From its origins in the ancient kingdom of Illyria and the Roman province of Illyricum, through Byzantine and Ottoman rule, the granting of Albanian independence in 1912, the rise and fall of communism to its current fragile democracy, Northern Albania can be seen as a cultural crossroads - especially remarkable given its mountainous and difficult landscape. This book, both scholarly and readable, is the first modern comprehensive history of Northern Albania and is a timely and accessible introduction to a remote and inaccessible region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Valentine Alexa Leeper was born in Melbourne on Valentines Day, 1900, the daughter of Alexander Leeper (18481934), the brilliant but argumentative first Warden of Trinity College. Her long life might seem unremarkable: she lived simply in the family's Victorian suburban home, neither marrying nor travelling overseas, and was regarded by many as an eccentric, at times tiresome, blue-stocking. The hoard of letters Valentine Leeper wrote and received over nearly a century reveals her, however, as a remarkable woman. The letters also provide an intimate view of issues, great and small, of the turbulent twentieth century, through the eyes of a clear-minded observer. Valentine publicly condemned racism and any curtailing of freedom of speech, and extensively supported refugees and the rights of Aborigines and women. Like many women of her time and background, she was an active member of a network seeking social justice, but remained always her own person. At once a staunch traditionalist, and ahead of her time, she was a truly liberated woman"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of "salvation" tends to be interpreted as an exclusively religious category. The author of this essay believes that philosophy, the quintessence of human thinking, possesses a salvific power, as it offers the possibility of broadening the horizons of humanity, leading us out of the oppressive limits of our "hic et nunc." However, philosophical salvation needs to be found in time and space. The edification of a society based upon the ideal of solidarity, in which history may be meaningful for everyone, is its preeminent manifestation.

Book Stop Calling Me Christian

Download or read book Stop Calling Me Christian written by Josh Nelson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Christian has many connotations, and depending on one’s personal beliefs and experiences, they may be positive or negative. Regardless, we must acknowledge that it has become an extremely polarizing word today. In Stop Calling Me Christian, author Josh Nelson shares his personal story of faith, where he went from a so-called “Christian” to a man truly dedicated to honoring Christ and applying the gospel in his life. Introducing us to the notion of Phariseeism—a disease of the heart and mind that can leave godly believers blind, hopeless, and standing on a weakened faith—Josh shows how this disease can be cured through listening to and truly hearing God’s Word. And by learning about the path of authentic discipleship, you too can discover the life in Jesus that you always desired. Many of us believe we are living the good Christian life, yet there is a reason why our prayers may seem to go unanswered, as if God is not there. But he is always with us, and we must make it the focus of our lives to seek him and reflect the character of his son.

Book Theatre as Alter Native in Derek Walcott

Download or read book Theatre as Alter Native in Derek Walcott written by Nirjhar Sarkar and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Theatre as Alter/“Native” in Derek Walcott' attempts a close and detailed politico-aesthetic analysis of his major plays. At the core of this book lies the attempt to answer the question of how postcolonial artists and intellectuals have dared to imagine radically different ways of living in the face of oppositional, binary choices. And as the title suggests, Walcott’s plays carve out critical spaces for new narratives of “becoming” and alternative priorities, entangled in contesting identities inscribed by race, language and ethnicity. Theatre, as Walcott knew, would be instrumental in demystifying Caribbean “Absence” and “Void” and generating an alternative version of dominant reality. By a deliberate unseating of the Western texts, filled with banal stereotypes and their representational biases, and by triggering “re-action” to the scripts of the colonizers in profoundly paradoxical ways, Walcott’s plays affirm the Caribbean identity. This study seeks to demonstrate how his plays open an alter/“native” universe in terms of aesthetics, dramaturgy and the performative, and reclaims ‘New World’ identity in terms of negotiation rather than negation—undermining the claim of “solid”, “authentic” culture. Placing the arts at the forefront of nation-building, Walcott situated his plays at a crucial juncture between the passing of the Empire and the newly-born Federation in his archipelago.
