Book Depression Is Contagious

Download or read book Depression Is Contagious written by Michael Yapko and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-09-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is the world’s most common mood disorder, and it is spreading like a viral contagion. You can’t catch depression in the same way you catch a cold, but the latest research provides overwhelming support that moods spread through social conditions, defining depression as more a social problem than a medical illness. Our social lives directly shape our brain chemistry and powerfully affect the way we think and feel—and our brains can change for the better with healthy social circumstances as much as they can change with medication. Drugs may address some of depression’s symptoms, but Dr. Yapko convincingly argues that we need to treat depression at its root, by building social skills and improving relationships, in order to halt the spread of this debilitating disorder. Filled with practical exercises and illustrative examples, his groundbreaking plan guides readers to identify key social patterns that reinforce depression so they can learn the skills to overcome depression and even prevent new episodes from occurring. Provocative and controversial as well as prescriptive and hopeful, Depression Is Contagious investigates the social phenomenon of depression’s epidemic-like spread while offering a more realistic road to recovery.

Book Turning Turtles in Tortuguero

Download or read book Turning Turtles in Tortuguero written by Anne Ake and published by . This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning Turtles in Tortuguero tells the story of Archie Carr and Larry Ogren, and the sea turtle research and tagging station established by Carr in 1955. It also tells the story of survival of a tiny Caribbean village where harvesting turtles was a way of life. Change was inevitable in Tortuguero, Costa Rica long before Dr. Carr arrived in the village asking questions about the turtles that crawled onto the beach to nest. For generations the annual nesting had provided a primary source of protein for the village, but in the twentieth century the turtles became a commodity to be sold around the world. Soon the turtle population was no longer sustainable. Their numbers steadily declined. Conservation biology was born here, as Larry Ogren and Carr's later graduate students struggled to uncover the mysteries of sea turtle life. There were no roads leading to Tortuguero and life was primitive in the isolated village. Stories from the time are often amusing, but their importance to sea turtle conservation and the developing discipline of conservation biology cannot be overstated. As trust and friendship grew between the villagers and biologists the villagers learned that they could live better by not eating the turtles. And the little community evolved into a popular ecotourism destination.

Book Sincerely Ty Cobb

Download or read book Sincerely Ty Cobb written by Hank O'Neal and published by Texas Christian University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948 Hank O'Neal was eight years old, and his baseball mentors were his grandfather, C. A. Christian, who'd been an exceptional semipro player at the turn of the century, and two of his father's classmates at TCU, Jim Nolan and Jim Busby. His grandfather went on to college and became a pharmacist, but he never forgot his days of glory as a teammate of the soon-to-become-legendary Ty Cobb. After his introduction to these three men, all Hank wanted was to play baseball. In 1954 his family moved to Syracuse, New York, where Hank hung around McArthur Stadium, the home of the Syracuse Chiefs. One of the players, Ben Zientara, lived two doors away, and not only did Hank pester him and the other players, but he also began writing major league players, both active and retired. One of them, Ty Cobb, became his pen pal in 1955. He'd played with Hank's grandfather in Georgia fifty-five years earlier, and the "nastiest man in baseball" was kind and supportive to his young fan. Sincerely, Ty Cobb traces ten years of a child's life in baseball, from his first struggles on the sandlot to his final high school game. It is illustrated with period memorabilia and twelve pages of handwritten letters from Ty Cobb, plus others from Hall of Fame players like Eddie Walsh and Frankie Frisch.

Book The Three Christs of Ypsilanti

Download or read book The Three Christs of Ypsilanti written by Milton Rokeach and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II. The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serves as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity.”
