Book Noble Deeds of Woman Or Examples of Female Courage and Virtue Classic Reprint

Download or read book Noble Deeds of Woman Or Examples of Female Courage and Virtue Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Starling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble Deeds of Woman, or Examples of Female Courage and Virtue The pleasure experienced by the Author in perusing the scattered records of female excellence gave rise to the idea that an interesting selection might be made from them, and prove not only instructive but useful. The acknowledged superiority of example over precept con firmed this Opinion; and the ensuing narratives have been chosen as most suitable to the various conditions and trials of life. Woman, to whose fostering care the direction of infancy is intrusted, - to whom manhood is indebted for mental recreations and for consolation in difficulties, upon whom also man, in declining yea'rs, depends for solace and support, - too often betrays her incapacity to fulfil the important duties she is called upon to under take. When thus circumstanced, she frequently fails in the performance of a mother's tender obligations, and she not only loses the affections, but sinks in the estima tion, of her husband - or, immersed in the dissipations of society, she neglects to attend to those more sacred offices on which even her own happiness depends. To the just fulfilment of these, it is necessary she should think, feel, and act correctly; yet this cannot be expected, while the ornamental accomplishments, now cultivated with so much care, are allowed to supersede the more valuable acquirements. Book Noble Deeds American Women

Download or read book Noble Deeds American Women written by J. Clement and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Noble Deeds American Women: With Biographical Sketches of Some of the More Prominent This work was suggested by one of a similar character, entitled Noble Deeds of Woman, an English work, which contains but three references to American Women, two of which are of but very little importance. Only one article in the two works is alike, and that is the letter written by Mrs. Sigourney to the women of Greece, in 1828, in behalf of the ladies of Hartford. This failure to do justice to American women, may have been an oversight; be that as it may, a work of the kind here presented, seemed to be needed, and we regret that its preparation had not been assigned to an abler pen. Book excerpt: Possibly the first novel written by a black woman slave, this work is both a historically important literary event and a gripping autobiographical story in its own right. When her master is betrothed to a woman who conceals a tragic secret, Hannah Crafts, a young slave on a wealthy North Carolina plantation, runs away in a bid for her freedom up North. Pursued by slave hunters, imprisoned by a mysterious and cruel captor, held by sympathetic strangers, and forced to serve a demanding new mistress, she finally makes her way to freedom in New Jersey. Her compelling story provides a fascinating view of American life in the mid-1800s and the literary conventions of the time. Written in the 1850's by a runaway slave, THE BONDSWOMAN'S NARRATIVE is a provocative literary landmark and a significant historical event that will captivate a diverse audience.

Book Stories of the Lives of Noble Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of the Lives of Noble Women Classic Reprint written by W. H. Davenport Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Lives of Noble Women In selecting the subjects of his biographical sketches, the author has endeavoured to fix upon women who have been not less distinguished by their domestic than by their public virtues; upon women who have been Christians faithful to the end, and patriots firm in their loyalty to their country, as well as upon women illustrious as wives, mothers, daughters, or sisters. The sphere in which woman influences us for good is much wider than society sometimes supposes; and the pages of history record innumerable examples of her heroic devotion and constancy to a great purpose. It is well that these examples should be kept before the eyes of the younger female members of our families; and that they should be encouraged to aspire to a high standard of duty, while not forgetting that their true happiness will always lie within the home circle. Download or read book Women in American History Classic Reprint written by Harry F. Estill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in American History Value of Woman's Work. - From the founding of the first English settlements in the New World the women of America have bravely and nobly done their part in making our country a great nation. It is true that the pages of history are filled with stories of the deeds of men, while not many names of women are recorded. The reason for this is that woman's work for the most part has been done quietly and inconspicuously. The home has been her Kingdom, and until recent years there was no place for her in public life. To men were left the making of wars, the administration of government, and the leadership of movements affecting communities and states. But even before she entered public life woman's part in the making of our history was just as important as that of men. Women as Home Makers. - You remember how in the Virginia colony the womanless settlement at Jamestown was rapidly drifting to ruin through homesickness, discontent and idleness. Then a shipload of English maidens arrived at the Virginia shores. The young women became the wives of the settlers and established real homes in the wilderness.
