Download or read book Sayre Family written by Ralph Hall Sayre and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-07-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was a silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their inherent abilities. SAYRE FAMILY another 100-years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Ohio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in the area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

I stumbled upon his latest victim tied up in the basement of the house he was renovating, and it was my evidence that helped convict him to a life in prison. My boyfriend never forgave me for turning against his dad and a couple of years later took his own life. That was fifteen years ago. I am now a local evening radio presenter, but it seems I can’t escape my past. Late one night, when I’m alone, the phone rings. The caller wants me to solve a riddle, and tells me a life depends on it. ‘Only you can save her’ ‘If she dies it’s your fault’ And so, the deadly game begins. Someone wants revenge. Book excerpt: Fifteen Minutes of Fame is a satirical commentary on contemporary culture. The book celebrates the cult of celebrity, the wonders of everyday experience, and lots in between. Andrew Godsell, with pen in hand and tongue in cheek, explores diverse subjects, as fact mingles with fiction. The enduring influence of such literary figures as Lewis Carroll, George Orwell, Samuel Pepys, J K Rowling, and Evelyn Waugh is considered. Political themes range from Thatcherism to the Con-Dem coalition, either side of New Labour. The importance of history stretches from Stonehenge, and the legends of King Arthur, to the growth of Internet genealogy. The excitement of sport is reflected in football, and the communal spirit of Sport Relief. Music by John Lennon, Madonna, Patti Smith, and Bruce Springsteen sits alongside a folk festival. The established arts of theatre and cinema combine with the emergence of Reality TV.

Download or read book Inventing Edward Lear written by Sara Lodge and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Inventing Edward Lear is an exceptional, valuable, original study, presenting new materials on aspects of Lear’s life and work.” —Jenny Uglow, author of Mr. Lear and The Lunar Men Edward Lear wrote some of the best-loved poems in English, including “The Owl and the Pussycat,” but the father of nonsense was far more than a poet. He was a naturalist, a brilliant landscape painter, an experimental travel writer, and an accomplished composer. Sara Lodge presents the fullest account yet of Lear’s passionate engagement in the intellectual, social, and cultural life of his times. Lear had a difficult start in life. He was epileptic, asthmatic, and depressive, but even as a child a consummate performer who projected himself into others’ affections. He became, by John James Audubon’s estimate, one of the greatest ornithological artists of the age. Queen Victoria—an admirer—chose him to be her painting teacher. He popularized the limerick, set Tennyson’s verse to music, and opened fresh doors for children and adults to share fantasies of magical escape. Lodge draws on diaries, letters, and new archival sources to paint a vivid picture of Lear that explores his musical influences, his religious nonconformity, his relationship with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and the connections between his scientific and artistic work. He invented himself as a character: awkward but funny, absurdly sympathetic. In Lodge’s hands, Lear emerges as a dynamic and irreverent polymath whose conversation continues to draw us in. Inventing Edward Lear is an original and moving account of one of the most intriguing and creative of all Victorians.
Download or read book Who s Afraid of Children written by Helen Brocklehurst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brocklehurst's impressive work breaks new ground in normative international political theory. It develops a new theoretical framework which exposes how children are present in international relations and security practices using an empirical and comparative assessment of the role of children and youth in a range of conflicts including Nazi Germany, Mozambique, South Africa, Northern Ireland, the Cold War and the British Empire. The author argues powerfully that concepts of children are partial and 'contained' through their construction as non-political. Global in scope, this book is a timely and important contribution given the growing visibility of children in international relations evident after September 11. The political and ethical question at the heart of this book is: will international relations dare to catch up?
Download or read book Tim Noakes The Quiet Maverick written by Daryl Ilbury and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dissident scientist, a disrupted media ... On 5 February 2014, world-renowned scientist Tim Noakes fired off a tweet into a highly volatile media space; the fallout threatened to destroy his career. This is the untold backstory. Veteran journalist and writer Daryl Ilbury unveils, layer by layer, a combustible mix of ignorance, suspicion and academic wrong-doing, played out in a highly disrupted media space, where consumers demand snappy answers to highly complex questions. It’s the story of society’s historical distrust of science, the fractious relationship between science and mainstream media, the intricacies of human nutrition, and the brutal fallout when a soft-spoken scientist with a taste for social media and a flair for challenging convention voiced his maverick opinion. Featuring exclusive interviews with Noakes, as well as with people who have worked closely with him, including former Springbok coach Jake White and polar swimmer Lewis Gordon Pugh, as well as award-winning journalists and fellow scientists and academics, some of whom now consider Noakes dangerous and out of control, this book promises to be as controversial as the man himself.
