Book excerpt: The EU-US Summit on 26 March will mark eight months since the partners decided to formally launch negotiations on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). The aim of the TTIP - if finalised - is to remove tariffs, align regulatory standards and open up government procurement. Born out of the need to boost economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic and to respond to the rise of emerging markets, the Partnership will add an extra €120 billion to the EU economy annually, according to estimates by the European Commission. While President Obama's first visit to Brussels will likely be dominated by an agenda focusing on Ukraine and economic recovery, it is also worth thinking about some of the more sensitive areas involved in the TTIP discussions.One such area relates to defence industry and markets. Back in June 2013, public procurement of defence and security goods was included in the Commission's negotiating mandate. Given the sensitive nature of defence procurement, however, both sides have, for the time being, agreed to drop a 'defence TTIP'. This situation is indicative of a broader negotiating environment that has seen a moratorium on including an investment chapter in the Partnership and other sectoral exclusions. Therefore, at first glance, the TTIP's overarching aims of abolishing tariffs, enhancing the compatibility of the EU and US regulatory environment and ensuring a greater flow of goods, services and investments in the transatlantic space will not apply to the defence sector. But is this necessarily the end of the story?

These differ from previous agreements in their economic significance and large geographic scale, and the wide scope of trade-related issues. The current rise of nationalist and isolationist ideologies across Europe and the USA has raised questions on the future of cross-regional trade deals and made the need to understand their implications for economic and political governance ever more urgent. Two main forms of governance that are central to this volume are the democratic tensions over new generation trade deals on the one hand, and their geopolitical ramifications on the other, which have come into collision to herald the advent of a highly uncertain period of world politics. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to examine the extent to which the end of the Cold War led to Europeanisation in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The analysis takes into consideration previous studies on Europeanisation and its impact on the transformation of national security and defence, and attempts to account for the development of Europeanisation and related mechanisms. These mechanisms, which have been described as framing mechanisms and negative integration, incorporate all the major relevant factors identified here (i.e. a common Strategic Culture, new security identity, domestic political decision-making, industrial base and defence-spending decline) that contributed to the realisation of the CSDP. The relevance of these factors for CSDP Europeanisation is examined through an historical and empirical analysis, and the relationship between the CSDP and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is also explored. This approach facilitates analysis of the debate concerning the emergence of the CSDP and throws light on the political shift that led European Union (EU) leaders to support the CSDP. Another aspect of this study is the empirical examination of the dynamics and limitations of the European defence sector. The changes which took place in this sector facilitated the emergence of the CSDP and are therefore analysed in the light of globalisation issues, economies of scale, economic crises, military autonomy, new security strategy and Research and Development (R&D) impact. In this book, a number of distinguished scholars and educators of various backgrounds discuss views of the Holocaust. Problematic views are often influenced by a persistent attitude of Holocaust denial which is derived, in part, from discourses in the Muslim communities in their countries of origin. The essays collected here explore the backgrounds of these perceptions and highlight positive approaches and developments. Many of the contributions were written by people working in the field and reflecting on their experiences. This collection also reveals that problematic views of the Holocaust are not limited to Muslim communities.
