Book No Pie No Priest

Download or read book No Pie No Priest written by Harry Pearson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer Harry Pearson takes a warm and witty journey around Britain in pursuit of the lost folk sports that somehow still linger on in the glitzy era of the Premier League and Sky Sports to find out how and why they have survived and to meet the characters who keep them going. When Victorian public schoolmasters and Oxbridge-educated gentlemen were taming football, codifying cricket, bringing the values of muscular Christianity to the boxing ring and the athletics field, games that dated back to the pagan era clung on in isolated pockets of rural Britain, unmodified by contemporary tastes, shunned by the media and sport’s ruling elites. Here they remain, small, secret worlds, free from media scrutiny and VAR controversies, wreathed in an arcane language of face-gaters, whack-ups, potties, gates-of-hell and the Dorset flop; as much a part of the British countryside as the natterjack toad and almost as endangered. No Pie, No Priest! travels through Britain in search of the nation’s traditional rural sports, seeking out the championship of Knur and Spell (a Viking forefather of golf) on the West Yorkshire moors; watching Irish Road Bowling in County Armagh (once a surprising interest of England cricket captain Mike Brearley), Popinjay at Kilwinning Abbey in Ayrshire, the Aunt Sally competitions of Oxfordshire, and taking in world championship Stoolball (often considered the dairymaid’s form of cricket) and Toad-in-the-Hole in West Sussex. No Pie, No Priest! combines sports reporting, travelogue and history, and features a cast of bucolic eccentrics and many deeply impenetrable regional accents.

Book excerpt: “Delightful.” —The New York Times Book Review A psychic travel agent and a Seattle PD detective solve a murder in this quirky mystery in the vein of Lisa Lutz’s The Spellman Files and Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden series. Meet Leda Foley: devoted friend, struggling travel agent, and inconsistent psychic. When Leda, sole proprietor of Foley's Flights of Fancy, impulsively re-books Seattle PD detective Grady Merritt’s flight, her life changes in ways she couldn’t have predicted. After watching his original plane blow up from the safety of the airport, Grady realizes that Leda’s special abilities could help him with a cold case he just can’t crack. Despite her scattershot premonitions, she agrees for a secret reason: her fiancé’s murder remains unsolved. Leda’s psychic abilities couldn’t help the case several years before, but she’s been honing her skills and drawing a crowd at her favorite bar’s open-mic nights, where she performs Klairvoyant Karaoke—singing whatever song comes to mind when she holds people’s personal effects. Now joined by a rag-tag group of bar patrons and pals alike, Leda and Grady set out to catch a killer—and learn how the two cases that haunt them have more in common than they ever suspected.

Book The Enchanted Wanderer

Download or read book The Enchanted Wanderer written by Nikolai Leskov and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nikolai Leskov's writing exploded the conventions of nineteenth-century Russian fiction. Here is the other Russia, mythical and untamed: an uneasy synthesis of Orthodoxy and Old Believers, a land populated by soldiers and monks, serfs and princes, Tartars and gypsies—a vast country brimming with the promise of magic. These seventeen tales, some rooted in the oral tradition, others cast as sophisticated anecdotes, are all told in the voices of storytellers addressing their audience—allowing us, as readers, to join a group of listeners. Innovative in form and rich in wordplay, the narratives unfurl in startlingly modern ways. The great gift of this new translation allows us to hear all the nuances of Leskov’s brilliant language.

Book Racing Pigs And Giant Marrows

Download or read book Racing Pigs And Giant Marrows written by Harry Pearson and published by Abacus. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his acclaimed book about football in the north-east,THE FAR CORNER, Harry Pearson vowed that his next project would not involve hanging around outdoors on days so cold that itinerant dogs had to be detached from lamp-posts by firemen. It would be about the summer: specifically, about a summer of shows and fairs in the north of England. Encompassing such diverse talents as fell-running, tupperware-boxing and rabbit fancying (literally), and containing many more jokes about goats than is legal in the Isle of Man, Racing Pigs and Giant Marrows is without doubt the only book in existence to explain the design faults of earwigs and expose English farmers' fondness for transvestism. Warm, wise and very funny, it confirms increasing suspicions that Harry Pearson is really quite good.

Book The Old Priest

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony Wallace
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2013-09-12
  • ISBN : 0822979209

Download or read book The Old Priest written by Anthony Wallace and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Priest is a book of transformations. From the cigar-smoke-and-mirrors world of casino life, to the collection’s title character morphing into a goat-man before the narrator’s eyes, to a family drama upended by a miniature dinosaur in the backyard, Anthony Wallace writes about life-changing events. The characters seek to escape their earthly boundaries through artifice and fantasy, and those boundaries can be as elegant and fragile as a martini glass or as hardscrabble as an Indian reservation. In these eight vividly detailed short stories we encounter cheating husbands, neurotic housewives, out-of-control teenagers, desperate gamblers, deluded alcoholics, and a host of others who would like a chance at something more. Some face the consequences of their actions, while others simply begin to see what they’ve been missing all along. Through wry, ironic prose—and what feels like firsthand experience—Wallace describes a comic and often misguided search for self-knowledge in the most unlikely locations—like the Emerald City, a low-rent gambling den where a cocktail waitress dressed as an X-rated Dorothy offers gamblers more than a Scotch on the rocks; or the Bastille Hotel-Casino, where a dealer dressed as an eighteenth century footman deals five-dollar blackjack to a reminiscing Holocaust survivor. Occasionally a real demon appears, but the collection is mostly about personal demons and the possibility of exorcising them. The stories in The Old Priest have to do with time and memory, and they convincingly open out beyond ordinary daily time to reveal something else—the present moment, perhaps, but a larger, more mysterious conception of it.

Book Government by Consent

Download or read book Government by Consent written by John Darash and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government by Consent By: John Darash This book is the product of 12 years of research and the developing and organizing of National Liberty Alliance with a mission to properly educate the People as to their heritage and how to have government by consent by resurrecting “Committees of Safety” in every county in America. And then, and only then, will We the People be able to reinstate our Natural Law Republic and experience true Liberty. Thomas Jefferson, the man who discovered America’s freedom formula wrote the foundation of our “Natural Law Republic” via the Declaration of Independence building America upon Eight Ancient Biblical Principles that build “Sound Government”they are; 1) Self-evident Truths, that are so obvious so moral that it cannot be denied 2) The laws of nature and of nature’s God. 3) All men are created equal 4) People are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights 5) Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are Paramount. 6) Governments are instituted to secure these rights 7) Government derives their just powers from the consent of the governed 8) The People have a duty to alter or abolish government destructive of these ends Upon these eight principles “We the People ordained and established” six directives for our government servants to follow as they exercise their vested powers. They are, to (1)form a more perfect union, (2)establish justice, (3)insure domestic tranquility, (4)provide for the common defense, (5)promote the general welfare, and (6)secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. Today we have wandered away from His precepts, We the People have lost sight of these “Natural Law Principles” and so have our government servants. We have lost our way and the blessings of Liberty are all but lost. But I believe that if we look into the blessings that God has bestowed upon America, we will be humbled, for He promised that “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” – 2 Chr 7:14;Thomas Jefferson said, “If a People expect to be ignorant and free, they expect what never was and never will be.” I believe that this book has the potential of waking up America. It will dare you to know and have courage to use your own reasoning! And by the grace of nature’s God, we will save ourNatural Law Republic!” “The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” – Eccl 12:10-14. In Psa 119:45 God said that only the People that “seek His precepts will walk in liberty.” It’s time that His wayward sons repent and return to their Heritage founded upon His precepts, a Nation built upon His Incarnation. One Nation under God!
