Book excerpt: First published in 1976. Poets from Homer and Virgil to Tennyson and Hardy have written much about armed conflict on land and sea but it was not until the end of the First World War that the term War Poetry was used to describe not merely that verse which took war as its subject but a kind of poetry which had not been written before, a literature which did not celebrate the martial virtues but one which was created by those who had endured battle and described in exact and often brutal terms just what it was like to be a fighting man in the first Great War of the twentieth century. This is a collection of essays on the following poets: Keith Douglas; Alun Lewis; Sidney Keyes; Roy Fuller; Alan Ross and Charles Causley; Henry Reed and others and American Poets of the Second World War.

Book excerpt: Technology is changing the way wars are fought. Unmanned robots are used to drop bombs, launch missiles, and are even used in ground combat . . . but if things go wrong, who's really to blame? In the ever-challenging deserts of Iraq, US army officer Nathan Dixon comes face to face with the future of warfare. Assigned to investigate a friendly fire incident involving a rogue unmanned ground combat vehicle, Dixon finds that behind every action lies a chain of hidden decisions. And this one placed hundreds, maybe thousands, of troops in harm's way. Journalist Alex Hughes is out to expose the truth. As the insurgencies heat up around them, Dixon must weed through self-serving paramilitary contractors, fledging commanding officers, and soldiers willing to hide the facts at any cost, to discover who defines the rules of war without the soldier. And where does patriotism end and national security begin? At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: Born into an upper middle class family in 1843, Hannah Preston grows up knowing the advantages of music, books and education in the settled life of a farming community near Chicago. Her life changes irrevocably when Robert Cargill, a restless Scots-Irish immigrant, sweeps into it like a strong wind off Lake Michigan. Marriage to Robert brings her separation from a comfortable life with parents, siblings, and friends and carries her on a journey across prairies and mountains by emigrant train to a small ranch in California. There the hardships of raising seven children begin in a two-room adobe house where water had to be hauled daily from a neighbor’s well. During the following quarter century, Hannah sees her children educated beyond the local country school by sending them to San Jose. She helps her husband claim a homestead some twenty miles away. Often apart from him for days or weeks, she finds it necessary to care for family at home while Robert works on the homestead. Through births, deaths, separations, and physical hardships, Hannah gains strength while retaining her faith, her love for family, and her spirit of gratitude and deep joy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Polk Award Winner: This account of American book banning and the battles against it is "a tour de force to fascinate lawyers and laymen alike” (The New York Times Book Review). Up until the 1960s, depending on your state of residence, your copy of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer might be seized by the US Postal Service before reaching your mailbox. Selling copies of Cleland’s Fanny Hill in your bookstore was considered illegal. Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence was, according to the American legal system, pornography with no redeeming social value. Today, these novels are celebrated for their literary and historic worth. The End of Obscenity is Charles Rembar’s account of successfully arguing the merits of such great works of literature in front of the Supreme Court. As the lead attorney on the case, he—with the support of a few brave publishers—changed the way Americans read and honor books, especially the controversial ones. Filled with insight from lawyers, justices, and the authors themselves, The End of Obscenity is a lively tour de force. Racy testimony and hilarious asides make Rembar’s memoir not only a page-turner but also an enlightening look at the American legal system. “[Rembar’s] book deals not with the why of obscenity laws but with the how . . . many of his anecdotal digressions into history and law are sharp and amusing.” —The New Republic

Book excerpt: A vivid account of the early battles, first in the Pulitzer Prize-winning trilogy: “One of America’s foremost Civil War authorities” (Kirkus Reviews). The first book in Bruce Catton’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Army of the Potomac Trilogy, Mr. Lincoln’s Army is a riveting history of the early years of the Civil War, when a fledgling Union Army took its stumbling first steps under the command of the controversial general George McClellan. Following the secession of the Southern states, a beleaguered President Abraham Lincoln entrusted the dashing, charismatic McClellan with the creation of the Union’s Army of the Potomac and the responsibility of leading it to a swift and decisive victory against Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Although a brilliant tactician who was beloved by his troops and embraced by the hero-hungry North, McClellan’s ego and ambition ultimately put him at loggerheads with his commander in chief—a man McClellan considered unworthy of the presidency. McClellan’s weaknesses were exposed during the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American military history, which ended in a stalemate even though the Confederate troops were greatly outnumbered. After Antietam, Lincoln ordered McClellan’s removal from command, and the Union entered the war’s next chapter having suffered thousands of casualties and with great uncertainty ahead. America’s premier chronicler of the nation’s brutal internecine conflict, Bruce Catton is renowned for his unparalleled ability to bring a detailed and vivid immediacy to Civil War battlefields and military strategy sessions. With tremendous depth and insight, he presents legendary commanders and common soldiers in all their complex and heartbreaking humanity.

Book Tini s People

Download or read book Tini s People written by Edith M. Kozdon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-07-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tinis People is a true story about real people, her memories of Jews, Poles, Czechs, Germans and Austrians all of whom she thought of as her people form the backbone of this book. The book provides a historical, cultural and social perspective on the life of a Central European Jewish family from the 1820s to end of the Holocaust in 1945. Tini was the youngest daughter of a traditional Jewish family. After her arranged Jewish marriage failed she married Willi, a Roman Catholic, the first mixed marriage in her family as well as the first such in the town where they lived. In the 1930s growing anti-Semitism emanating from Germany culminated in the occupation of the Czech lands. Under the Nazi Race Laws Tinis mixed marriage initially provided her with immunity from persecution, however, her name was eventually placed on a deportation list. Willi foolishly talks about his Jewish wife with a total stranger, Bernhard Asmus, only to discover that he was confiding in a high-ranking member of the Gestapo. Asmus unexpectedly promises to help and issues them travel passes to the small country village where he had found them a safe place to stay. Nicknamed The Jewish Father by the local populous, Bernhard Asmus risked not only his own life but also the lives of his wife and son by helping Protestants, Catholics and Jews alike. Tini survives the war - a woman left behind to mourn the deaths of those she loved, including her beloved daughter, Hedy. All of them were innocent victims, first incarcerated and then exterminated in Nazi death camps. While reminiscing about her people only once did Tini say of those Germans who complained of their treatment in the post-war years Perhaps they brought it upon themselves when they chose Adolf Hitler to be their leader!

Book excerpt: This English fiction presents the story of Mehala, a strong-willed woman, and starts with a strange description of the Ray where Mehalah and her frail mother live. With rent day coming close, their fierce landowner, Elijah Rebow, gives them a visit to remind them that now they owe their livelihood to him. He attempts to force Mehalah into submission, yet she openly fights him and insists on self-sufficiency and liberty. Mehalah is a major Victorian novel published in 1880 and is set in the isolated marshes of Mersea and the surrounding area. The prominent theme of the book is independence and imprisonment. The novel is filled with incredible imagery and strong characterization. The writing is skillful, gripping, vibrant, and weirdly funny in places. In addition to the dark main plot, there are foolish supporting characters to deliver comic relief. The story also acts as an interesting account of life at the time in this part of the country during that period. It sheds light on the poverty, struggles, and desolation of the people and landscape.
