Download or read book More Baths Less Talking written by Nick Hornby and published by McSweeney's. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Read what you enjoy, not what bores you,” Nick Hornby tells us. That simple, liberating, and indispensable directive animates each installment of the celebrated critic and author’s monthly column in the Believer. In this delightful and never-musty tour of his reading life, Hornby tells us not just what to read, but how to read. Whether tackling a dismayingly bulky biography of Dickens while his children destroy something in the next room, or getting sucked into a serious assessment of Celine Dion during an intensely fought soccer match featuring his beloved Arsenal, or devouring an entire series of children’s books while on vacation, Hornby’s reviews are rich, witty, and occasionally madcap. These essays capture the joy and ire, the despair and exhilaration of the book-lover’s life, and will appeal equally to both monocle-wearing salonnieres and people, like him, who spend a lot of time thinking about Miley Cyrus’s next role.

Download or read book Just For Today written by Frankie Lee Bass and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jimmy Lee Snow, A.K.A. Bobby Williams, is not just your average bank robber and jewelry thief; he is also a highly skilled and somewhat lucky escape artist. As he narrowly frees himself from a maximum-security institution, for a second time, he meets some interesting characters along the way that advertently or inadvertently aid in his freedom. Once on the run, he certainly breaks the law to acquire cash, a car and a new identity. Because he’s oddly likable and not really violent, you seem to root for this lawbreaker, despite the fact you know he deserves to be caught and put back into the system. As you read further, you know Jimmy Lee isn’t your typical criminal. One of the many characters he encounters along the way is a hooker. Yet the only thing he wants from her is a new identity. This would normally be quite odd coming from a guy who just left prison after ten years! He then picks up two runaways and convinces them to go back home, where he even funds the bus ride. This begins to show Jimmy Lee’s odd sense of integrity. (By the way, we soon find out why he was “saving himself.”) Part two begins with his true passion; Veronica Lin Brooks, a teacher and soon-to-be partner on the run. The back story is interesting and seemingly unbelievable at times, but the reader can certainly see her attraction to this likable escapee. As the adventure unfolds you find yourself wanting to lecture her and root for them, all at the same time. As the FBI and detectives search for them, you can feel all their desperation and exhaustion. It finally concludes with an unexpected ending, but stranger things have happened.
Download or read book Life in Year One written by Scott Korb and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who's ever pondered what everyday life was like during the time of Jesus comes a lively and illuminating portrait of the nearly unknown world of daily life in first-century Palestine. What was it like to live during the time of Jesus? Where did people live? Who did they marry? And what was family life like? How did people survive? These are just some of the questions that Scott Korb answers in this engaging new book, which explores what everyday life entailed two thousand years ago in first-century Palestine, that tumultuous era when the Roman Empire was at its zenith and a new religion-Christianity-was born. Culling information from primary sources, scholarly research, and his own travels and observations, Korb explores the nitty-gritty of real life back then-from how people fed, housed, and groomed themselves to how they kept themselves healthy. He guides the contemporary reader through the maze of customs and traditions that dictated life under the numerous groups, tribes, and peoples in the eastern Mediterranean that Rome governed two thousand years ago, and he illuminates the intriguing details of marriage, family life, health, and a host of other aspects of first-century life. The result is a book for everyone, from the armchair traveler to the amateur historian. With surprising revelations about politics and medicine, crime and personal hygiene, this book is smart and accessible popular history at its very best.
