Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOCRATES is an international, multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary refereed and indexed scholarly journal produced as par of the Harvard Dataverse Network. This journal appears quarterly in English, Hindi, Persian in 22 disciplines. About this Issue: This issue of Socrates has been divided into four sections. The first section of this issue is English Language and Literature. The first article of this section applies feministic approach on the play “Women Beware Women,” written by Thomas Middleton, to show how the ideas are used by writers to help the dominance of male over female. The second article of this section explores the blocks and hurdles faced by the academia in imbibing and imparting the English language in Kerala. It explores the function of language in relation to expressing oneself and in relation to human lives and culture. It also touches upon the strategies to be adopted in teaching the language in a multilingual setting. It also tries to relate the learning of language to literature, which has always been a subject of debate. The third article of this section aims to shed light on the colonial features in Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, presenting a postcolonial approach to the novel by drawing on the two critics’ ideas. The second section of this issue contains an article which examines the concept of “the friend zone” and its overwhelming impact on life and consciousness. Some crucial questions are raised in this context as to its new found origin, cause and its relative uniqueness. Critics’ views along with that of psychologists and social scientists are taken into account so as to approach the problem tactfully and effectively. The contribution of electronic media in its growth and propagation is studied so as to trace its propensity in overriding philosophies and social structures. Endeavor has been made to examine the pros and cons of abiding by this juvenile trend and a viable solution has been proposed. The third section of this issue contains a research paper on Iranin Spike Butted AXE/ ADZ-AXES in Iran. This topological study indicates that although the main manufacturing center in Iran was Luristan and Elam at their very first appearance in the Iranian plateau, in following years each type and form seem to be a distinct regional and even chronological evolutionary form of spike butted axes of simple practical examples to their highly decorated ceremonial variants. The fourth section of this issue contains an article that discusses the notion of metaphor, and relates it to a specific meaning, which, It argues, articulates Sara Kane’s play 4.48 Psychosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors collaborated in the book entitled Unconditional Love in an effort to show that as love develops between two people, God has His hand in nurturing these events. We make choices daily, some good and some not so good, that can stay with us for a lifetime. God has a way of interceding with these choices if you only let Him. The love between two people cannot be planned or even predicted. The sacrifice that each person must give and all the events that occur during the development is only a part of the wonderment of the true meaning of unconditional love. To be able to give up everything in life to do what is best for another person is truly a godly intercession. We look to the heavens and realize that God interceded to lead us in making the right decision. Trusting God in finding the right person to share your life with is a prayer that both Curt and Frank wish for you, resulting in you being able to say that you also have found unconditional love.

Book The Ekistics of Animal and Human Conflict

Download or read book The Ekistics of Animal and Human Conflict written by Rishi Dev and published by Copal Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban wildlife management is a town planning subject. It is logical and important to relate the animal and human conflict seen all over the world, as a phenomenon which is applicable to all types of human settlements, despite the diversities and complexities of cultures, societal structures, laws, value systems, religions and so on. A universal principle or theory governs and applies to all cities which define these conditions and phenomena creating the conflict or coexistence. This book investigates the niches of one of the key urban animals from a syntactic, semantic and pragmatic perspective and explores how these niches are naturally synonymous to similar patterns, structures and compositions within human settlements. It explores and defines the demographic patterns, thresholds and phenomenon, which leads to formation of the different levels and extremes of interaction between the species. This forms a paradigm which classifies this conflict within the various disciplines and frameworks of urban ecology. The focus is primarily on urban dogs, it being a keystone species, but is later related with other urban animals as well. The premise for this approach is that history has shown how certain species have persuasively coexisted with humans for so many millennia, yet a conflict happens between animals and humans and within humans over animals. It is thus logical to believe that the forces which create this conflict cannot solely be natural to the species in question and have to come from outside – from the settlement patterns of both species and the “net resultant force and dynamics”. The book looks at these dichotomies in four distinct but interrelated ways. It delves deep inside four niches which form the dynamics of any settlement – spatial, cultural, ecological and economic and explores all scales at which the “succession” and evolution of animals take place in highly urbanized settlements.

Download or read book Critical Zone 2 written by Q.S. Tong and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite globalizing forces, whether economic, political, or cultural, there remain conspicuous differences that divide scholarly communities. How should we understand and respond to those discursive gaps among different traditions and systems of knowledge production? Critical Zone is a book series in cultural and literary studies that is concerned with current critical debates and intellectual preoccupations in the humanities. The series aims to improve understanding across cultures, traditions, discourses, and disciplines, and to produce international critical knowledge. Critical Zone is an expression of timely collaboration among scholars from Hong Kong, mainland China, the United States, and Europe, and conceived as an intellectual bridge between China and the rest of the world. The second volume of Critical Zone, as does its predecessor, consists of two parts. The first part includes original essays that deal with the concept and practice of "empire," as a collective response to the question of how imperial formations and operations, in the past and at present, should be examined in a larger context of international politics and how historical imperialism may be considered in relation to the conditions of our time. Part II includes two sets of translations of essays, first published in Chinese, about two recent debates in China: one on the canonicity of Lu Xun and the other on the problem of how to reform Peking University in the context of globalization. These two groups of translations are led by review essays that contextualize the debates.
