Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The bestselling author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry equips readers to recognize and resist the lies that seek to rob them of peace and freedom. “Live No Lies is brilliant, deep, scriptural, and will equip you to face the enemy and fight.”—Jennie Allen, New York Times bestselling author of Get Out of Your Head We are at war. Not with a foreign government or domestic terrorists or a creepy new artificial intelligence hell-bent on taking over the world. No, it’s a war we feel deep inside our own chests: we are at war with lies. The problem isn’t so much that we tell lies but that we live them. We let them into our bodies, and they sabotage our peace. All around us in the culture and deep within our own body memories are lies: deceptive ideas that wreak havoc on our emotional health and spiritual well-being, and deceptive ideas about who God is, who we are, and what the good life truly is. The choice is not whether to fight or not fight, but whether we win or surrender. Ancient apprentices of Jesus developed a paradigm for this war; they spoke of the three enemies of the soul: the devil, the flesh, and the world. Live No Lies taps into this ancient wisdom from saints of the Way and translates the three enemies for the modern era, with all its secularism and sophistication. As a generation, we chuckle at the devil as a premodern myth, we are confused by Scripture’s teaching on the flesh in an age where sensual indulgence is a virtue not a vice, and we have little to no category for the New Testament concept of the world. In this provocative and practical book, bestselling author John Mark Comer combines cultural analysis with spiritual formation. He identifies the role lies play in our spiritual deformation and lays out a strategic plan to overcome them. Do you feel the tug-of-war in your own heart, the inner conflict between truth and lies? The spirit and the flesh? The Way of Jesus and the world? It’s time to start winning. It’s time to live no lies...

Download or read book The Trials of Eroy Brown written by Michael Berryhill and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Berryhill’s account of this infamous 30-year-old murder case . . . Provides a jarring portrait of a once-medieval state prison.” —Publishers Weekly In April 1981, two white Texas prison officials died at the hands of a black inmate at the Ellis prison farm near Huntsville. Warden Wallace Pack and farm manager Billy Moore were the highest-ranking Texas prison officials ever to die in the line of duty. The warden was drowned face down in a ditch. The farm manager was shot once in the head with the warden’s gun. The man who admitted to killing them, a burglar and robber named Eroy Brown, surrendered meekly, claiming self-defense. In any other era of Texas prison history, Brown’s fate would have seemed certain: execution. But in 1980, federal judge William Wayne Justice had issued a sweeping civil rights ruling in which he found that prison officials had systematically and often brutally violated the rights of Texas inmates. In the light of that landmark prison civil rights case, Ruiz v. Estelle, Brown had a chance of being believed. The Trials of Eroy Brown, the first book devoted to Brown’s astonishing defense, is based on trial documents, exhibits, and journalistic accounts of Brown’s three trials, which ended in his acquittal. Michael Berryhill presents Brown’s story in his own words, set against the backdrop of the chilling plantation mentality of Texas prisons. Brown’s attorneys—Craig Washington, Bill Habern, and Tim Sloan—undertook heroic strategies to defend him, even when the state refused to pay their fees. The Trials of Eroy Brown tells a landmark story of prison civil rights and the collapse of Jim Crow justice in Texas.
Download or read book Stop Falling for the Okeydoke written by Stephen A. Tillett and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States of America has been plagued by a critical birth defect since its founding: the idea that race matters. Stephen A. Tillett, an Air Force veteran and pastor for the past 27 years, argues that race is a social construct and has no basis in science. But sadly, it has permeated every aspect of American life for hundreds of years. The Bible has been prescient in speaking to this regrettable dynamic: "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Instead of focusing on obstacles that we all face and dreams we all share, race and racism has kept people of common interests artificially divided. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "We must learn to live together as brothers [and sisters] or perish together as fools." To do what King suggested, we must stop making vigorous assertions about assumptions that are demonstrably untrue. We must stop believing in ideas that have a visceral appeal but lead to immoral outcomes. We must Stop Falling for the Okeydoke. Book trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwK9z81GE9A
Download or read book No Filter and Other Lies written by Crystal Maldonado and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You should know, right now, that I'm a liar. They're usually little lies. Tiny lies. Baby lies. Not so much lies as lie adjacent. But they're still lies... Golden-haired Max Monroe has it all: beauty, friends, and tons of followers. Her picture-perfect existence seems eminently enviable. Except it's all fake. "Max" is actually Kat Sanchez, a quiet and sarcastic 17-year-old living in drab Bakersfield, California. Nothing glamorous about her existence—just bad house parties, a crap school year, and the awkwardness of dealing with best friend Hari's unrequited love. But while Kat's life is far from perfect, she thrives as Max: doling out advice, sharing beautiful photos, networking with fans, even finding a real friend (or more?—Is Kat into girls!?) in a gorgeous Fat follower named Elena. But the closer Elena and "Max" get, the more Kat feels she has to keep up the façade. "Max" is the first time people have really listened to what Kat has to say—and after a lifetime of invisibility (including ice-cold indifference from her parents) can she really give that up? But when one of Kat's posts goes viral and gets back to the girl she's been stealing photos from, her entire world—real and fake—comes crashing down around her. Can she escape the web of lies she's woven without hurting the people she loves? This insightful, provocative novel—hilarious and raw by turns—is the second book from Crystal Maldonado, author of smash-hit New England Book Award Winner Fat Chance, Charlie Vega. Brilliantly plotted, deeply sensitive, and rich in voice, No Filter and Other Lies deftly addresses FOMO, first love, one-sided love, frayed family ties, raced exclusion on social media, queer awakenings, and learning to live with—and love—yourself. Because the most powerful lies are the lies we tell ourselves. Named to the ALA Rainbow Roundtable's Rainbow Book List! Download or read book Transcending the Color Line written by Bobby E. Mills and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moral and philosophical approach to the stubborn problem of racism. Transcending the Color Line by sociologist and professor Bobby E. Mills, PhD, represents a philosophical attempt to make sense out of American black collective experience. These essays do not reflect traditional sociological perspectives and methodological considerations. Instead, the query is: How do we live? And more importantly, what are we willing to sacrifice in order to live the way we say we want to live? In other words, this collection digs deeper into the moral and spiritual issues that lie beneath the more obvious sociological ones. Invariably the search for moral understanding and spiritual meaning is neither easy nor popular. Yet it is the abstract, empirical (amoral and apolitical) character of traditional sociology that has all but rendered it irrelevant to the resolution of contemporary social ills. The biased theoretical assumptions of the scientific method (i.e., abstract empiricism) are the social basis for the collective bias otherwise known as the illusion of value neutrality. This collective cultural bias is the social foundation for institutional racism, sexism, theological dogmatism (i.e., denominationalism), and above all, authoritarianism. Indeed, every “ism” is a schism, and schisms divide. Our either/or logic fosters cultural extremism rather than a universal perspective on humanity. By digging deep to the true source of our sociological and leadership issues, these essays not only call black and white individuals accountable to the dysfunction present in our shared social experience, but inspire all people to transcend the color line and become part of the solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My "Norman Rockwell" childhood was anything but that once you stepped into the painting. It was a life of clashes of violence with a mother indoctrinated in conservatism. My relationship with my mother ended in divorce. From the Bible Belt of the Tennessee Hills to the Hollywood Hills, Nob Hill and Capitol Hill, this is my tell-all odyssey of the underworld life of the Hollywood and Washington elite. A chance meeting one night with "Madame" Wayland Flowers landed me in Hollywood and into the life of the adult video stardom that led to modeling, male stripping and working in the escort services, leading to clandestine encounters with the Hollywood stars. And now after twenty-five years of silence, TELL SECRETS, TELL NO LIES, allows me to finally cast away the shadow that has followed me and reveal the shocking provocative world of malice, perversion, and delirium in this jaw-dropping memoir that defies the imagination. A little about me... I grew up in the bible belt of America and knew at a very early age my life's purpose would never be fulfilled living in that environment. On my seventeenth birthday I set out on my own journey to discover my true values and beliefs. My odyssey took me to New York, California, Washington D.C., and Texas. Along the way I met my life long companion David. I now reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. In reflecting on my past I can truly say I have lived my life to its fullest and I share that experience with each of you in my memoir TELL SECRETS, TELL NO LIES. As mentioned...
