Book An Anthology of Spanish Poetry

Download or read book An Anthology of Spanish Poetry written by John A. Crow and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1980-12-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John A. Crow, a leading Hispanist, has culled the best translations available--by such poets as Richard Franshawe, Edward Fitzgerald, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, Robert Southey, and many distinguished modern poets--of poems ranging from the eleventh century to the present to make this the most complete collection of both Spanish and Spanish American poetry in English translation. Represented here is work by such twentieth century poets as Gabriela Mistral, Octavio Paz, Federico García Lorca, César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, Anotnio Machado, and Juan Ramón Jiménez, many of whom the editor has known personally. The inclusion of many contemporary poets whose verse has never before appeared in English makes this anthology a particularly valuable collection.

Book The Ancient English Poetry

Download or read book The Ancient English Poetry written by Various Authors and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work gives a unique opportunity to dive into the world of ancient British poetry and legends. Here, a reader will find the primary sources for the epic stories about Gilderoy, Winifred, Bryan, Sir Cauline, King Estmere, Sir Guy, King Arthur, the Fairy Queen, and many more. A collection in three volumes contains numerous works by famous and anonymous authors adapted to modern English. The significance of this work is apparent. It was the first collection of ballades in English poetry of this size. It influenced the Romantic movement greatly and contributed to the revivals of ballades in England. Robert Burns, Wordsworth, and Coleridge based their lyric poems on this collection. Although, this work could never see the light of the day. Back in the 18th century, Irish Bishop Thomas Percy saved a manuscript almost set afire by a housemaid. It was an ancient collection of ballades, which inspired the Bishop for further research. Today, it's not just an important historical book; it is also a great source of study materials as well as an exciting read for anyone fond of history and British poetry.

Book Frontier Memory Cultural Conflict and Exchange in the Romancero fronterizo

Download or read book Frontier Memory Cultural Conflict and Exchange in the Romancero fronterizo written by Sizen Yiacoup and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on the late medieval and early modern Castilian frontier ballad has tended to fall into two distinct categories: analyses which promote a view of the fronterizo corpus as an instrument of anti-Muslim, nationalist ideology in the service of the Christian Reconquest, or interpretations which favour the perception of the poems as idealizing and distinctly Islamophile in their representations of Granadan Muslims. In this study, Şizen Yiacoup offers readings of the romances fronterizos that take into consideration yet look beyond expressions of cross-cultural hostility or sympathy in order to assess the ways in which the poems recall a process of cultural exchange between Christians and Muslims. An understanding of the relationship between the ballads, their original social setting, and the setting in which they achieved their greatest popularity provides the framework for this interpretation of the poems’ shifting cultural connotations. Accordingly, Yiacoup traces the evolution of their historical and cultural significance as they moved from their origins in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when a Castilian frontier with Islamic Granada was still a reality, into the sixteenth, when this boundary vanished as part of the larger realignment of cultural, territorial and political frontiers of the new ‘Spanish’ empire.
