Book excerpt: Black and Hispanic students are not learning enough in our public schools, and their typically poor performance is the most important source of ongoing racial inequality in America today—thus, say Abigail and Stephan Thernstrom, the racial gap in school achievement is the nation's most critical civil rights issue and an educational crisis; it's no wonder that "No Child Left Behind," the 2001 revision of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, made closing the racial gap in education its central goal. An employer hiring the typical Black high school graduate or the college that admits the average Black student is choosing a youngster who has only an eighth-grade education. In most subjects, the majority of twelfth-grade Black students do not have even a "partial mastery" of the skills and knowledge that the authoritative National Assessment of Educational Progress calls "fundamental for proficient work" at their grade. No Excuses marshals facts to examine the depth of the problem, the inadequacy of conventional explanations, and the limited impact of Title I, Head Start, and other familiar reforms. Its message, however, is one of hope: Scattered across the country are excellent schools getting terrific results with high-needs kids. These rare schools share a distinctive vision of what great schooling looks like and are free of many of the constraints that compromise education in traditional public schools. In a society that espouses equal opportunity we still have a racially identifiable group of educational have-nots—young African Americans and Latinos whose opportunities in life will almost inevitably be limited by their inadequate education. When students leave high school without high school skills, their futures—and that of the nation—are in jeopardy. With successful schools already showing the way, no decent society can continue to turn a blind eye to such racial and ethnic inequality.

Book The Great Miss Driver

Download or read book The Great Miss Driver written by Anthony Hope and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Miss Driver is one of Anthony Hope's renowned and lovely cheeky heroine novels. There is a strange mystery surrounding Nicholas Driver, a wealthy tanner who had planned to buy out much of the town of Catford. The lonely Miss Driver becomes acquainted with the narrator and tells him her story. Excerpt: "Cartmell's talk, as we drove back, was calculated to give her an almost overwhelming idea of her possessions and (if her temperament set that way) of her responsibilities. Big commercial buildings, blocks of shops, whole streets of small houses, drew from the lawyer a point of the finger and a brief, "That's yours"—or sometimes he would tell how her father had bought, how built, and how profited by the venture. Every time she would turn her head to look where his finger pointed, and nod slightly, gravely, composedly."

Book Zingerman s Guide to Giving Great Service

Download or read book Zingerman s Guide to Giving Great Service written by Ari Weinzweig and published by Hyperion. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial phenomenon Ari Weinzweig, co-founder of the much-loved Zingerman's Deli, shares the secrets to providing world-class customer service. Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a beloved deli with some of the most loyal clientele around. It has been praised for its products and service in media outlets far and wide, including the New York Times, Men's Journal, Inc. Magazine, Esquire, Atlantic Monthly, USA Today, and Fast Company. And what started out as a small deli has grown to a flourishing restaurant, catering service, bakery, mail-order operation, creamery, and training business. Booming business and loyal customers are proof enough that the Zingerman's team knows a thing or two about customer service. Now in Zingerman's Guide to Giving Great Service, co-founder Ari Weinzweig shares the unique Zingerman method of treating customers, giving the reader step-by-step instructions on what to teach staff, how to train them, how to implement the training, how to measure their success, and finally, how to reward performance. Some of Zingerman's time-tested principles: Customers who get a great product but poor service won't be as loyal as those who are disappointed with a product but get great service. You'll get more complaints if people believe you care enough to listen to them. And that's a good thing. Employees who are rewarded, respected, and well cared for treat customers the same way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the point of being a witch if Annabelle Walsh couldn’t manage a spell to fix her broken heart? Okay, maybe calling herself a witch was pushing it - but as a dedicated dabbler in all things metaphysical, the twenty-six-year-old figured she could, at the very least, speed up the healing process. Dumped out of the blue by high-powered banker Wilson Monroe, her boyfriend of two-and-a-half years, Annabelle’s hopes of walking down the aisle seem remoter than ever, and springtime in New York had never looked so dismal. With the help of her dearest friends in the world - cool, calm and collected Lorna, and fiery, feisty, and foul-mouthed Maria Grazia - Annabelle tries to pull herself out of the dumps by crying her eyes out, getting smashed on girly drinks, and trying to work the odd spell. An idle wander into an unfamiliar New Age shop adds the bit of magic in her life that she’d been looking for: a Pooka called Callie, an interfering, mischievous spirit determined to turn Annabelle’s life around - mostly by turning it upside down. Suddenly, Annabelle hasn’t got time to brood, and her career as a journalist begins to take off; in fact, it’s during a brainstorming session for an off-off-off-off Broadway theatre production that she meets tall, dark, and handsome Jamie Flynn, an Irishman in New York who seems to be keen at first sight, if not in love quite yet. As Annabelle gets her life back on track, she starts to see the difference between real life, a real career, a real man . . . and all it took was a little magic mischief. Book The Empowered Manager

Download or read book The Empowered Manager written by Peter Block and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowerment produces the conditions for high performance. Especially for middle managers and below. Empowered cultures attract and retain talent. They produce high achievement, high accountability and high commitment. The Empowered Manager uncovers a roadmap to creating a more accountable culture in today's fragmented and virtual world. Bestselling author Peter Block is a true visionary: author of the classic Flawless Consulting, his work is about empowerment, stewardship, chosen accountability, and reconciliation of community. In this book, he returns his eye toward management to renew our efforts to create a shift in the traditional hierarchy. Twenty years after the original book, Block talks of why it is so difficult to both open the door to empowerment and more importantly, have people walk through it. It is more important than ever to create a culture in which all members of an organization are treated as entrepreneurs, giving them ownership over their role and responsibilities. This is in the face of the reality that most employees want safety, not the adventure of empowerment. Peter enhances the first edition of the book by acknowledging employees wish for dependency. Their longing for the days when a job carried a promise of a future, and companies cared more about the product and the people, than about the money. This is written primarily for people in the middle. Good managers and employees who care more about doing good work and treating people right, than ambition and making it into the ruling class. The upper middle and below is where there is the greatest need for great management. Which builds on valuing strengths, and allowing talent the space to stretch and achieve. Almost independent of the power points of people at the top. This book shows you how a new approach to management empowers all employees at all levels, and culminates in better business outcomes for the entire organization. Help shape a culture of commitment Develop the political skills to negotiate successfully Take responsibility for your actions Learn to fail up, and face setbacks with courage If you feel controlled by bureaucracy, unrewarded for creativity, and from a distance, powerless to control your own destiny, this book is the breath of fresh air your career has been craving. Timeless tips from a master of business strategy alongside a framework for more effective management makes The Empowered Manager a must-read guide for anyone doing business today.

Book A Leap of Faith

Download or read book A Leap of Faith written by Hugh F. X. McMahon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is not hiding, He is waiting. It takes courage, sometimes an enormous amount, to admit you have been wrong, especially if you have been wrong for a long time. All of us are prodigals at one time or another in our lives and with our relationships. We give up on God. He never gives up on us. We might look at our lives and say, "Yeah, I know He forgives, butHe would never forgive me. Look at what I've done." Well, He knows every beat of our hearts, every breath we take. He certainly knows the bad we've done and the good we've done. He's there, waiting.
